Preparation of a Counter Electrode with P
This study investigates the applicability of a counter electrode with a P-type semiconductor oxide (such as NiO) on a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). The counter electrode is fabricated by depositing an NiO film on top of a Pt film, which has been deposited on a Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass using an ion-sputtering coater (or E-beam evaporator), using a simple spin coating method. This study also examines the effect of the average thickness of TiO2 film deposited on a working electrode upon the power conversion efficiency of a DSSC. This study shows that the power conversion efficiency of a DSSC with a Pt(E)/NiO counter electrode (4.28%) substantially exceeds that of a conventional DSSC with a Pt(E) counter electrode (3.16%) on which a Pt film was deposited using an E-beam evaporator. This result is attributed to the fact that the NiO film coated on the Pt(E) counter electrode improves the electrocatalytic activity of the counter electrode
PlanningVis: A visual analytics approach to production planning in smart factories
Production planning in the manufacturing industry is crucial for fully
utilizing factory resources (e.g., machines, raw materials and workers) and
reducing costs. With the advent of industry 4.0, plenty of data recording the
status of factory resources have been collected and further involved in
production planning, which brings an unprecedented opportunity to understand,
evaluate and adjust complex production plans through a data-driven approach.
However, developing a systematic analytics approach for production planning is
challenging due to the large volume of production data, the complex dependency
between products, and unexpected changes in the market and the plant. Previous
studies only provide summarized results and fail to show details for
comparative analysis of production plans. Besides, the rapid adjustment to the
plan in the case of an unanticipated incident is also not supported. In this
paper, we propose PlanningVis, a visual analytics system to support the
exploration and comparison of production plans with three levels of details: a
plan overview presenting the overall difference between plans, a product view
visualizing various properties of individual products, and a production detail
view displaying the product dependency and the daily production details in
related factories. By integrating an automatic planning algorithm with
interactive visual explorations, PlanningVis can facilitate the efficient
optimization of daily production planning as well as support a quick response
to unanticipated incidents in manufacturing. Two case studies with real-world
data and carefully designed interviews with domain experts demonstrate the
effectiveness and usability of PlanningVis

Infection with Helicobacter pylori is strongly associated with gastric cancer and gastric adenocarcinoma. WHO classified H. pylori as a group 1 carcinogen in 1994. Impatiens balsamina L. has been used as indigenous medicine in Asia for the treatment of rheumatism, fractures and fingernail inflammation. In this study, we isolated anti-H. pylori compounds from this plant and investigated their anti- and bactericidal activity. Compounds of 2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (MeONQ) and stigmasta-7,22-diene-3β-ol (spinasterol) were isolated from the pods and roots/stems/leaves of I. balsamina L., respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) for MeONQ were in the ranges of 0.156–0.625 and 0.313–0.625 μg mL−1, respectively, and in the ranges of 20–80 μg mL−1 both of MICs and MBCs for spinasterol against antibiotic (clarithromycin, metronidazole and levofloxacin) resistant H. pylori. Notably, the activity of MeONQ was equivalent to that of amoxicillin (AMX). The bactericidal H. pylori action of MeONQ was dose-dependent. Furthermore, the activity of MeONQ was not influenced by the environmental pH values (4–8) and demonstrated good thermal (121°C for 15 min) stability. MeONQ abounds in the I. balsamina L. pod at the level of 4.39% (w/w db). In conclusion, MeONQ exhibits strong potential to be developed as a candidate agent for the eradication of H. pylori infection

Development and evaluation of a deep learning model for the detection of multiple fundus diseases based on colour fundus photography.
AIM: To explore and evaluate an appropriate deep learning system (DLS) for the detection of 12 major fundus diseases using colour fundus photography. METHODS: Diagnostic performance of a DLS was tested on the detection of normal fundus and 12 major fundus diseases including referable diabetic retinopathy, pathologic myopic retinal degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, retinitis pigmentosa, retinal detachment, wet and dry age-related macular degeneration, epiretinal membrane, macula hole, possible glaucomatous optic neuropathy, papilledema and optic nerve atrophy. The DLS was developed with 56 738 images and tested with 8176 images from one internal test set and two external test sets. The comparison with human doctors was also conducted. RESULTS: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of the DLS on the internal test set and the two external test sets were 0.950 (95% CI 0.942 to 0.957) to 0.996 (95% CI 0.994 to 0.998), 0.931 (95% CI 0.923 to 0.939) to 1.000 (95% CI 0.999 to 1.000) and 0.934 (95% CI 0.929 to 0.938) to 1.000 (95% CI 0.999 to 1.000), with sensitivities of 80.4% (95% CI 79.1% to 81.6%) to 97.3% (95% CI 96.7% to 97.8%), 64.6% (95% CI 63.0% to 66.1%) to 100% (95% CI 100% to 100%) and 68.0% (95% CI 67.1% to 68.9%) to 100% (95% CI 100% to 100%), respectively, and specificities of 89.7% (95% CI 88.8% to 90.7%) to 98.1% (95%CI 97.7% to 98.6%), 78.7% (95% CI 77.4% to 80.0%) to 99.6% (95% CI 99.4% to 99.8%) and 88.1% (95% CI 87.4% to 88.7%) to 98.7% (95% CI 98.5% to 99.0%), respectively. When compared with human doctors, the DLS obtained a higher diagnostic sensitivity but lower specificity. CONCLUSION: The proposed DLS is effective in diagnosing normal fundus and 12 major fundus diseases, and thus has much potential for fundus diseases screening in the real world
Higher Infection of Dengue Virus Serotype 2 in Human Monocytes of Patients with G6PD Deficiency
The prevalence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is high in Asia. An ex vivo study was conducted to elucidate the association of G6PD deficiency and dengue virus (DENV) infection when many Asian countries are hyper-endemic. Human monocytes from peripheral mononuclear cells collected from 12 G6PD-deficient patients and 24 age-matched controls were infected with one of two DENV serotype 2 (DENV-2) strains–the New Guinea C strain (from a case of dengue fever) or the 16681 strain (from a case of dengue hemorrhagic fever) with a multiplicity of infection of 0.1. The infectivity of DENV-2 in human monocytes was analyzed by flow cytometry. Experimental results indicated that the monocytes of G6PD-deficient patients exhibited a greater levels of infection with DENV-2 New Guinea C strain than did those in healthy controls [mean±SD:33.6%±3.5 (27.2%∼39.2%) vs 20.3%±6.2 (8.0%∼30.4%), P<0.01]. Similar observations were made of infection with the DENV-2 16681 strain [40.9%±3.9 (35.1%∼48.9%) vs 27.4%±7.1 (12.3%∼37.1%), P<0.01]. To our knowledge, this study demonstrates for the first time higher infection of human monocytes in G6PD patients with the dengue virus, which may be important in increasing epidemiological transmission and perhaps with the potential to develop more severe cases pathogenically
Genetic susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma in chromosome 22q13.31, findings of a genome-wide association study.
Background and Aim: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, long-term alcohol use, cigarette smoking, and obesity are the major risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the United States, but the disease risk varies substantially among individuals with these factors, suggesting host susceptibility to and gene-environment interactions in HCC. To address genetic susceptibility to HCC, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS).
Methods: Two case-control studies on HCC were conducted in the United States. DNA samples were genotyped using the Illumian microarray chip with over 710 000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We compared these SNPs between 705 HCC cases and 1455 population controls for their associations with HCC and verified our findings in additional studies.
Results: In this GWAS, we found that two SNPs were associated with HCC at

Chronic Kidney Disease, But Not Diabetes, Can Predict 30-Day Outcomes in Patients with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction after Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: A Single-Center Experience
Background: Patients with acute coronary syndrome and impaired renal function have been shown to have high mortality. However, there is scarce literature to date addressing the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) and renal function on clinical outcomes of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in Taiwan. Method: This study enrolled 512 STEMI patients who received primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Patients were divided into 4 groups including group 1: patients without DM or CKD (nDM-nCKD); group 2: patients with DM but without CKD (DM-nCKD); group 3: patients with CKD but without DM (nDM-CKD); group 4: patients with DM and CKD (DM-CKD). Patients were also classified into four groups based on their estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR): stage 1 (eGFR 90 ml/min/1.73 m 2 , n = 163), stage 2 (eGFR = 89-60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 , n = 171), stage 3 (eGFR = 59-30 ml/min/1.73 m 2 , n = 136), and stage 4 (eGFR < 30 ml/min/1.73 m 2 , n = 42). The complication rates, length of hospital stay, and 30-day outcomes were analyzed. Results: The patients in both the nDM-CKD group and DM-CKD group had higher incidences of hypotension, intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation use, and respiratory failure (p < 0.005). They had significantly longer hospital stay and 30-day mortality rates (p < 0.001). The patients with CKD stage 3 and 4 had longer hospital stay and higher 30-day mortality rates (p < 0.001). However, DM was not an independent factor on the length of hospital stay and 30-day mortality rates. Conclusions: STEMI patients with impaired renal function, but not DM, had significantly longer hospital stay and higher 30-day mortality rates
Association analyses of East Asian individuals and trans-ancestry analyses with European individuals reveal new loci associated with cholesterol and triglyceride levels
Large-scale meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified >175 loci associated with fasting cholesterol levels, including total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG). With differences in linkage disequilibrium (LD) structure and allele frequencies between ancestry groups, studies in additional large samples may detect new associations. We conducted staged GWAS meta-analyses in up to 69,414 East Asian individuals from 24 studies with participants from Japan, the Philippines, Korea, China, Singapore, and Taiwan. These meta-analyses identified (P < 5 × 10-8) three novel loci associated with HDL-C near CD163-APOBEC1 (P = 7.4 × 10-9), NCOA2 (P = 1.6 × 10-8), and NID2-PTGDR (P = 4.2 × 10-8), and one novel locus associated with TG near WDR11-FGFR2 (P = 2.7 × 10-10). Conditional analyses identified a second signal near CD163-APOBEC1. We then combined results from the East Asian meta-analysis with association results from up to 187,365 European individuals from the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium in a trans-ancestry meta-analysis. This analysis identified (log10Bayes Factor ≥6.1) eight additional novel lipid loci. Among the twelve total loci identified, the index variants at eight loci have demonstrated at least nominal significance with other metabolic traits in prior studies, and two loci exhibited coincident eQTLs (P < 1 × 10-5) in subcutaneous adipose tissue for BPTF and PDGFC. Taken together, these analyses identified multiple novel lipid loci, providing new potential therapeutic targets
