    Correlation-hole induced paired quantum Hall states in lowest Landau level

    A theory is developed for the paired even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level. We show that electrons bind to quantized vortices to form composite fermions, interacting through an exact instantaneous interaction that favors chiral p-wave pairing. Two canonically dual pairing gap functions are related by the bosonic Laughlin wavefunction (Jastraw factor) due to the correlation holes. We find that the ground state is the Moore-Read pfaffian in the long wavelength limit for weak Coulomb interactions, a new pfaffian of an oscillatory pairing function for intermediate interactions, and a Read-Rezayi composite Fermi liquid beyond a critical interaction strength. Our findings are consistent with recent experimental observations of the 1/2 and 1/4 fractional quantum Hall effects in asymmetric wide quantum wells.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; published versio

    Warming Changed Soil Respiration Dynamics of Alpine Meadow Ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau

    Alpine meadow system underlain by permafrost on the Tibetan Plateau contains vast soil organic carbon and is sensitive to global warming. However, the dynamics of annual soil respiration (Rs) under long-term warming and the determined factors are still not very clear. Using opentop chambers (OTC), we assessed the effects of two-year experimental warming on the soil CO2 emission and the Q10 value (temperature sensitivity coefficient) under different warming magnitudes. Our study showed that the soil CO2 efflux rate in the warmed plots were 1.22 and 2.32 times higher compared to that of controlled plots. However, the Q10 value decreased by 45.06% and 50.34% respectively as the warming magnitude increased. These results suggested that soil moisture decreasing under global warming would enhance soil CO2 emission and lower the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration rate of the alpine meadow ecosystem in the permafrost region on the Tibetan Plateau. Thus, it is necessary to take into account the combined effect of ground surface warming and soil moisture decrease on the Rs in order to comprehensively evaluate the carbon emissions of the alpine meadow ecosystem, especially in short and medium terms

    Non-Abelian Quantum Hall States and their Quasiparticles: from the Pattern of Zeros to Vertex Algebra

    In the pattern-of-zeros approach to quantum Hall states, a set of data {n;m;S_a|a=1,...,n; n,m,S_a in N} (called the pattern of zeros) is introduced to characterize a quantum Hall wave function. In this paper we find sufficient conditions on the pattern of zeros so that the data correspond to a valid wave function. Some times, a set of data {n;m;S_a} corresponds to a unique quantum Hall state, while other times, a set of data corresponds to several different quantum Hall states. So in the latter cases, the patterns of zeros alone does not completely characterize the quantum Hall states. In this paper, We find that the following expanded set of data {n;m;S_a;c|a=1,...,n; n,m,S_a in N; c in R} provides a more complete characterization of quantum Hall states. Each expanded set of data completely characterize a unique quantum Hall state, at least for the examples discussed in this paper. The result is obtained by combining the pattern of zeros and Z_n simple-current vertex algebra which describes a large class of Abelian and non-Abelian quantum Hall states \Phi_{Z_n}^sc. The more complete characterization in terms of {n;m;S_a;c} allows us to obtain more topological properties of those states, which include the central charge c of edge states, the scaling dimensions and the statistics of quasiparticle excitations.Comment: 42 pages.     3D Nondestructive Visualization and Evaluation of TRISO Particles Distribution in HTGR Fuel Pebbles Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

    A nonuniform distribution of tristructural isotropic (TRISO) particles within a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) pebble may lead to excessive thermal gradients and nonuniform thermal expansion during operation. If the particles are closely clustered, local hotspots may form, leading to excessive stresses on particle layers and an increased probability of particle failure. Although X-ray digital radiography (DR) is currently used to evaluate the TRISO distributions in pebbles, X-ray DR projection images are two-dimensional in nature, which would potentially miss some details for 3D evaluation. This paper proposes a method of 3D visualization and evaluation of the TRISO distribution in HTGR pebbles using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT): first, a pebble is scanned on our high-resolution CBCT, and 2D cross-sectional images are reconstructed; secondly, all cross-sectional images are restructured to form the 3D model of the pebble; then, volume rendering is applied to segment and display the TRISO particles in 3D for visualization and distribution evaluation. For method validation, several pebbles were scanned and the 3D distributions of the TRISO particles within the pebbles were produced. Experiment results show that the proposed method provides more 3D than DR, which will facilitate pebble fabrication research and production quality control

    A broad-host-range lytic phage vB_VhaS-R18L as a candidate against vibriosis

    Vibriosis is one of the most common bacterial diseases that cause high rates of mortality and considerable economic losses in aquaculture. Phage therapy has been considered as a promising alternative method to antibiotics in the biocontrol of infectious diseases. Genome sequencing and characterization of the phage candidates are prerequisites before field applications to ensure environmental safety. In this study, a lytic phage, named vB_VhaS-R18L (R18L), was isolated from the coastal seawater of Dongshan Island, China. The phage was characterized in terms of morphology, genetic content, infection kinetics, lytic profile, and virion stability. Transmission electronic microscopy indicated that R18L is siphovirus-like, comprising an icosahedral head (diameter 88.6 ± 2.2 nm) and a long noncontractile tail (225 × 11 nm). Genome analysis indicated R18L to be a double-stranded DNA virus with a genome size of 80,965 bp and a G + C content of 44.96%. No genes that encode known toxins or genes implicated in lysogeny control were found in R18L. A one-step growth experiment showed that R18L had a latent period of approximately 40 min and a burst size of 54 phage particles per infected cell. R18L showed lytic activity against a wide range of at least five Vibrio species (V. alginolyticus, V. cholerae, V. harveyi, V. parahemolyticus, and V. proteolyticus). R18L was relatively stable at pH 6–11 and at temperatures ranging from 4°C to 50°C. The broad lytic activity across Vibrio species and the stability in the environment make R18L a potential candidate for phage therapy in controlling vibriosis in aquaculture systems

    Up-regulation of bone marrow stromal protein 2 (BST2) in breast cancer with bone metastasis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bone metastases are frequent complications of breast cancer. Recent literature implicates multiple chemokines in the formation of bone metastases in breast cancer. However, the molecular mechanism of metastatic bone disease in breast cancer remains unknown. We have recently made the novel observation of the BST2 protein expression in human breast cancer cell lines. The purpose of our present study is to investigate the expression and the role of BST2 in bone metastatic breast cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>cDNA microarray analysis was used to compare the BST2 gene expression between a metastatic to bone human breast cancer cell line (MDA-231BO) and a primary human breast cancer cell line (MDA-231). The BST2 expression in one bone metastatic breast cancer and seven non-bone metastatic breast cancer cell lines were also determined using real-time RT-PCR and Western blot assays. We then employed tissue array to further study the BST2 expression in human breast cancer using array slides containing 20 independent breast cancer tumors that formed metastatic bone lesions, 30 non-metastasis-forming breast cancer tumors, and 8 normal breast tissues. In order to test the feasibility of utilizing BST2 as a serum marker for the presence of bone metastasis in breast cancer, we had measured the BST2 expression levels in human serums by using ELISA on 43 breast cancer patients with bone metastasis, 43 breast cancer patients without bone metastasis, and 14 normal healthy controls. The relationship between cell migration and proliferation and BST2 expression was also studied in a human breast recombinant model system using migration and FACS analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The microarray demonstrated over expression of the BST2 gene in the bone metastatic breast cancer cell line (MDA-231BO) compared to the primary human breast cancer cell line (MDA-231). The expression of the BST2 gene was significantly increased in the bone metastatic breast cancer cell lines and tumor tissues compared to non-bone metastatic breast cancer cell lines and tumor tissues by real time RT-PCR, Western blot and TMA. Furthermore, serum levels of BST2 measured by ELISA were also significantly higher among patients with breast cancer metastatic to bone compared to breast cancer patients without metastatic to bone (P < .0001). Most importantly, the breast cancer cell line that transfected with BST2 demonstrated increased BST2 expressions, which was associated with increased cancer cell migration and cell proliferation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results provide novel data indicating the BST2 protein expression is associated with the formation of bone metastases in human breast cancer. We believe that BST2 may be a potential biomarker in breast cancer with bone metastasis.</p

    The value of diffusion kurtosis imaging, diffusion weighted imaging and 18F-FDG PET for differentiating benign and malignant solitary pulmonary lesions and predicting pathological grading

    ObjectiveTo explore the value of PET/MRI, including diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and positron emission tomography (PET), for distinguishing between benign and malignant solitary pulmonary lesions (SPLs) and predicting the histopathological grading of malignant SPLs.Material and methodsChest PET, DKI and DWI scans of 73 patients with SPL were performed by PET/MRI. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), mean diffusivity (MD), mean kurtosis (MK), maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic total volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) were calculated. Student’s t test or the Mann–Whitney U test was used to analyze the differences in parameters between groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate independent predictors.ResultsThe MK and SUVmax were significantly higher, and the MD and ADC were significantly lower in the malignant group (0.59 ± 0.13, 10.25 ± 4.20, 2.27 ± 0.51[×10-3 mm2/s] and 1.35 ± 0.33 [×10-3 mm2/s]) compared to the benign group (0.47 ± 0.08, 5.49 ± 4.05, 2.85 ± 0.60 [×10-3 mm2/s] and 1.67 ± 0.33 [×10-3 mm2/s]). The MD and ADC were significantly lower, and the MTV and TLG were significantly higher in the high-grade malignant SPLs group (2.11 ± 0.51 [×10-3 mm2/s], 1.35 ± 0.33 [×10-3 mm2/s], 35.87 ± 42.24 and 119.58 ± 163.65) than in the non-high-grade malignant SPLs group (2.46 ± 0.46 [×10-3 mm2/s], 1.67 ± 0.33[×10-3 mm2/s], 20.17 ± 32.34 and 114.20 ± 178.68). In the identification of benign and malignant SPLs, the SUVmax and MK were independent predictors, the AUCs of the combination of SUVmax and MK, SUVmax, MK, MD, and ADC were 0.875, 0.787, 0.848, 0.769, and 0.822, respectively. In the identification of high-grade and non-high-grade malignant SPLs, the AUCs of MD, ADC, MTV, and TLG were 0.729, 0.680, 0.693, and 0.711, respectively.ConclusionDWI, DKI, and PET in PET/MRI are all effective methods to distinguish benign from malignant SPLs, and are also helpful in evaluating the pathological grading of malignant SPLs

    A Randomly-Controlled Study on the Cardiac Function at the Early Stage of Return to the Plains after Short-Term Exposure to High Altitude

    High altitude acclimatization and adaptation mechanisms have been well clarified, however, high altitude de-adaptation mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a controlled study on cardiac functions in 96 healthy young male who rapidly entered the high altitude (3700 m) and returned to the plains (1500 m) after 50 days. Ninety eight healthy male who remained at low altitude were recruited as control group. The mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular fraction shortening (LVFS), cardiac function index (Tei index) were tested. Levels of serum creatine kinase isoform MB (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme-1 (LDH-1), endothelin-1 (ET-1), nitrogen oxide (NO), serum hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso PGF2α), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malonaldehyde (MDA) were measured at an altitude of 3700 m and 1500 m respectively. The results showed that after short-term exposure to high altitude mPAP and Tei index increased significantly, while LVEF and LVFS decreased significantly. These changes were positively correlated with altitude. On the 15th day after the subjects returned to low altitude, mPAP, LVEF and LVFS levels returned to the same level as those of the control subjects, but the Tei index in the returned subjects was still significantly higher than that in the control subjects (P<0.01). We also found that changes in Tei index was positively correlated with mPAP, ET-1, HIF-1α and 8-iso PGF2α levels, and negatively correlated with the level of NO, LVEF, LVFS, CK-MB and LDH-1. These findings suggest that cardiac function de-adapts when returning to the plains after short-term exposure to high altitude and the function recovery takes a relatively long time
