    Combination resonances of parametric vibration system of the field modulated magnetic gear

    Considering the time-varying magnetic coupling stiffness caused by the component eccentricity, the parametric vibration model of the field modulated magnetic gear (FMMG) system is founded and the corresponding dynamic differential equations are deduced. The expressions of the combination resonances are worked out when the excited frequency is close to the combination frequency between the meshing frequency and the natural frequencies, and the resonance responses are discussed. The results show that the resonance amplitudes are much bigger when the excited frequency is close to the combination frequency between the meshing frequency and the natural frequency of the inner rotor torsional mode than when the frequency is close to other combination frequencies. Meanwhile, because the magnetic coupling stiffnesses are much smaller than the supporting stiffness, the resonance displacement of only one degree of freedom is always much bigger than the displacements of other degrees of freedom. The combination resonances make the stability regions of the FMMG system decrease and worsen the dynamic characteristics. All these can lay the foundation for the parameter optimization of the FMMG system

    Dynamic model of field modulated magnetic gear system

    Considering the special working principle and the structure of field modulation magnetic gear (FMMG), the magnetic coupling stiffnesses (MCS) are calculated and analyzed by finite element method. A magnetic coupling dynamic model is presented and the dynamic differential equations are founded. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of FMMG system are investigated. The effects of main design parameters on the natural frequencies are discussed. The results show that MCS are much smaller than the meshing stiffnesses of mechanical gears and are affected greatly by system parameters. Six modes of FMMG system have distinctive features, and six natural frequencies change differently as main parameters increase

    Antiproliferation and cell apoptosis inducing bioactivities of constituents from Dysosma versipellis in PC3 and Bcap-37 cell lines

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recently, interest in phytochemicals from traditional Chinese medicinal herbs with the capability to inhibit cancer cells growth and proliferation has been growing rapidly due to their nontoxic nature. <it>Dysosma versipellis </it>as Bereridaceae plants is an endemic species in China, which has been proved to be an important Chinese herbal medicine because of its biological activity. However, systematic and comprehensive studies on the phytochemicals from <it>Dysosma versipellis </it>and their bioactivity are limited.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Fifteen compounds were isolated and characterized from the roots of <it>Dysosma versipellis</it>, among which six compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. The inhibitory activities of these compounds were investigated on tumor cells PC3, Bcap-37 and BGC-823 <it>in vitro </it>by MTT method, and the results showed that podophyllotoxone (PTO) and 4'-demethyldeoxypodophyllotoxin (DDPT) had potent inhibitory activities against the growth of human carcinoma cell lines. Subsequent fluorescence staining and flow cytometry analysis indicated that these two compounds could induce apoptosis in PC3 and Bcap-37 cells, and the apoptosis ratios reached the peak (12.0% and 14.1%) after 72 h of treatment at 20 <it>μ</it>M, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study suggests that most of the compounds from the roots of <it>D. versipellis </it>could inhibit the growth of human carcinoma cells. In addition, PTO and DDPT could induce apoptosis of tumor cells.</p

    Incorporation of Extranodal Metastasis of Gastric Carcinoma into the 7th Edition UICC TNM Staging System

    BACKGROUND: To assess the clinical significance and prognostic impact of extranodal metastasis (EM) in gastric carcinoma and establish an optimal classification in the staging system. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 1343 patients with gastric carcinoma who underwent surgical resection were recruited to determine the frequency and prognostic significance of EMs. EMs were divided into two groups (EM1 and EM2) and then incorporated into the 7(th) edition UICC TNM staging system. EMs was detected in 179 (13.3%) of 1343 patients who underwent radical resection. Multivariate analysis identified EMs as an independent prognostic factor (HR = 1.412, 95%CI = 1.151-1.731, P<0.001). After curative operation, the overall survival rate were worse in patients with ≥3 cases of EM (EM2) than those with the number of 1 and 2 cases (EM1) (P<0.001). Survival of patients with EM1 was found almost comparable to that of N3 stage (P = 0.437). Survival of patients with EM2 showed similar to that of stage IV patients (P = 0.896). By using the linear trend X(2), likelihood ratio X(2), and Akaike information criterion (AIC) test, EM1 treated as N3 stage and EM2 treated as M1 stage performed higher linear trend X(2) scores, likelihood ratio X(2) scores, and lower AIC value than the 7(th) edition UICC TNM staging system, which represented the optimum prognostic stratification, together with better homogeneity, discriminatory ability, and monotonicity of gradients. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: EMs might be classified based on their number and prognostic information and should incorporate into the TNM staging system

    Retinal astrocytic hamartoma in tuberous sclerosis complex in an elderly person: a case report

    Abstract Background Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is proposed as a way of predicting the development and likelihood of retinal astrocytic hamartoma (RAH) in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in elderly patients. Case presentation This report describes a case of RAH in TSC in an elderly patient. The patient was a 62-year-old woman and experienced pain in the lower left abdomen for two years. Bilateral renal angiomyolipoma, multiple hepatic angiomyolipoma and multiple pulmonary nodules were demonstrated using computed tomography (CT). Brain CT showed bilateral multiple calcification near by the cella lateralis. A clinical diagnosis of TSC was made. Visual acuity (decimal) in the right and left eye was determined to be 0.6 and 0.8, respectively. SD-OCT revealed a retinal tumour in the inner layer of the retina in the right fundus and a pre-retinal membrane which may have evolved later. Conclusions A routine ophthalmic examination is advised for patients suspected of having TSC to prevent this condition from being overlooked. In addition, an OCT examination can be used to predict the development and likelihood of RAH

    Highly Efficient Liquid-Phase Hydrogenation of Naringin Using a Recyclable Pd/C Catalyst

    A highly efficient liquid-phase hydrogenation reaction using a recyclable palladium on carbon (Pd/C) catalyst has been used for the transformation of naringin to its corresponding dihydrochalcone. The effects of various solvents on the hydrogenation process were studied, with water being identified as the optimal solvent. The analysis also revealed that sodium hydroxide (NaOH) can accumulate on the surface of the Pd/C catalyst in alcoholic solvents, leading to its inactivation. The higher solubility of NaOH in water implies that it remains in solution and does not accumulate on the Pd/C catalyst surface, ensuring the catalytic activity and stability

    The Effect of Inferior Rectus Muscle Thickening on Intraocular Pressure in Thyroid-Associated Ophthalmopathy

    Objective. We aimed to evaluate the effect of inferior rectus muscle thickening on intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). Materials and Methods. We analyzed 33 patients with TAO (50 eyes) who presented with hypotropia in the primary position. There was significant eyeball movement restriction and inferior rectus muscle thickening was confirmed on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. We measured IOP changes in patients with TAO and normal participants in the primary position and upgaze using Icare tonometer. Moreover, we measured the preoperative and postoperative IOP in 13 patients with hypotropia who underwent inferior rectus recession. Results. The average inferior rectus thickness in the TAO and control groups was 0.71 ± 0.13 mm and 0.36 ± 0.12 mm, respectively. In the TAO group, the mean IOP was 16.8 ± 2.1 mm Hg in primary position (hypotropia), which increased by 8.9 ± 2.7 mm Hg to 25.7 ± 3.1 mm Hg in upgaze (horizontal vision). In the control group, the mean IOP in the primary position (horizontal vision) was 15.1 ± 1.9 mm Hg, which increased by 2.5 ± 1.4 mm Hg to 17.6 ± 2.1 mm Hg in upgaze. Compared with normal participants, patients with TAO who presented inferior rectus muscle thickening had a significantly greater increase in the IOP P<0.0001. In the patients with TAO who underwent inferior rectus muscle recession, there was a postoperative reduction in the IOP in the horizontal vision by 9.4 ± 5.2 mm Hg. Conclusion. Inferior rectus muscle thickening in patients with TAO causes a significant increase in the IOP upon upgaze compared to that in normal individuals. Given the ease of misdiagnosis as glaucoma, IOP measurement in patients with TAO should be performed in the primary position

    Efficacy and safety of XELOX and FOLFOX6 adjuvant chemotherapy following radical total gastrectomy

    The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of capecitabine and oxaliplatin (XELOX) with 5-fluorouracil, folinic acid and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX6) for advanced gastric cancer following total gastrectomy. We performed a retrospective study of 148 gastric cancer patients undergoing total gastrectomy combined with adjuvant chemotherapy from January, 2003 to June, 2009. The follow-up lasted until December, 2010. The Chi-square test and Kaplan-Meier methods were employed to compare the adverse events and prognosis. The total 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates were 95, 80 and 32%, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the two groups (P=0.273). Similarly, the total incidence of side effects was similar, but each treatment was associated with unique disturbances. The number of patients developing hand-foot syndrome in the XELOX group was far higher compared to the FOLFOX6 group (P=0.000). By contrast, more patients in the FOLFOX6 group suffered from nausea (P=0.024), vomiting (P=0.029), alopecia (P=0.033) and peripheral phlebitis (P=0.004). The total completion rate of the XELOX group was higher compared to the FOLFOX6 group (P=0.015). No significant difference was found in the prognosis of patients receiving XELOX therapy or FOLFOX6 therapy following total gastrectomy. XELOX was, however, more tolerable for patients with total gastrectomy
