Due to the economic and commercial rise of China, the economic value, political value, and instrumental advantages produced by Chinese have become more significant. The fever for learning Chinese continues to intensify all over the world, and Chinese instruction has become increasingly popular. Taiwan is a country with Chinese as its official language; and an important issue rose in international educational policy is how to attract international students to study Chinese in Taiwan. At the same time, Taiwan has promoted the internationalization of universities in the recent years; it hopes to elevate the visibility of its universities on the international stage, and intends to broaden diplomacy and promote economic development. This study found that international students who came to Taiwan to learn Chinese tended to be Asians. The different original residence locations of international students would significantly affect learning Chinese as serious leisure. International students who rented apartments with others off-campus or who chose home-stays had greater life planning, effort in Chinese learning, continuous benefits from Chinese learning, and a sense of community identification with their learning peers, as compared to international students who lived in school dormitories or lived alone off-campus. International students who had mor e disposable income each month were more likely to gain lasting benefits from Chinese learning and strong community identification with their learning peers.

Building Identification to Co-Create Supply Chain Innovation

    Get PDF
Supply chain identification is a process of self-categorization which can encourage firms to make more efforts to achieve supply chain goals. It is important for firms to co-create value with customers/suppliers while pursuing supply chain innovation. However, few studies have investigated identification issues from the business-to-business aspects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the identification generation among supply chain members, especially focus on the exchange mechanisms of identification. Based on these mechanisms, we develop a research model to explain the influences of the exchange mechanisms on information sharing and supply chain innovation. This empirical study investigates the top 1000 Taiwanese manufacturers issued by Commonwealth magazine of Taiwan in 2012. The results show: (1) The exchange mechanisms, including trust, commitment, communication, and reciprocal relationship have significant effects on information sharing. (2) Information sharing in the value co-creating process has a significant effect on supply chain innovation. Implications are provided based on the results

A questionnaire related to journal submission was sent to researchers for a 2-week period to investigate the submission status as well as the problems faced by Taipei Medical University faculties and researchers. This study has two major findings including the Experience of predatory journal and Calculations of academic performance point and discuss about users’ cognition and their needs from the library and the university, as well as the library policy and services related to predatory journals. It is authors’ hope that the research results can serve as reference for other medical libraries planning to provide relevant services

Near-Surface Attenuation and Velocity Structures in Taiwan from Wellhead and Borehole Recordings Comparisons

By analyzing the data from 28 seismic borehole stations deployed by the Central Weather Bureau Seismic Network throughout Taiwan from 2007 to 2014, we estimated the near-surface velocity (Vp and Vs) and attenuation (Qp and Qs) structures from surface to depths of approximately 300 m. To ensure that the deeper recordings were on the ray path between the seismic source and upper receiver, only events with an incidence angle of less than 35° were selected. Local magnitudes of analyzed events were between 1.1 and 6.6. The subsurface Qp and Qs were well modeled in the 5 - 40 Hz frequency band using the spectral ratio of direct P- and S-waves, respectively, at each station, under frequency-independent Q and ω2 source model assumptions. The estimated Vp in the Coastal Plain, the Western Foothills, the Longitudinal Valley, and the Yilan Plain were approximately 1000 - 2000 m s-1, which was lower than the Vp of 2500 - 4000 m s-1 in the Central Mountain Range. In addition, the Vs in the plain areas were lower than that in the Central Mountain Range. The low Vp and Vs and high Vp/Vs ratio in the Coastal Plain and the Western Foothills can be attributed to the unconsolidated soil and high pore-fluid content of subsurface sediments in the plain areas. In contrast to the velocity distribution, low Qp and Qs were observed in the Central Mountain Range. The low Qp and Qs with low Vp/Vs and low Qs/Qp ratios in the Central Mountain Range was consistent with the high thermal temperature observed in the field investigation. The obtained velocity and attenuation structures near surface could also provide important constraints in validation of the crustal structure of Taiwan

    A Modified Self-Tuning Fuzzy-Neural Controller

This paper presents a modified self-tuning fuzzy-neural controller in the applications nonlinear model reference control system. In order to make the controller have the adaptive control capability, the immediate system error (e(k)) and error change ( e(k)) are used to be the inputs for fuzzy-neural tuning mechanism. For simplifying the construction of fuzzy system, nine rules are used in the rule table. To demonstrate the superiority of the controller we developed, several nonlinear model reference control systems are studied and simulated. The simulation results clearly show that the self-tuning fuzzy-neural controller has quite promising potential in the real control applications
