    An alternative non-Markovianity measure by divisibility of dynamical map

    Identifying non-Markovianity with non-divisibility, we propose a measure for non-Markovinity of quantum process. Three examples are presented to illustrate the non-Markovianity, measure for non-Markovianity is calculated and discussed. Comparison with other measures of non-Markovianity is made. Our non-Markovianity measure has the merit that no optimization procedure is required and it is finite for any quantum process, which greatly enhances the practical relevance of the proposed measure.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figue

    Necessary and sufficient conditions for local creation of quantum discord

    We show that a local channel cannot create quantum discord (QD) for zero QD states of size d3d\geq3 if and only if either it is a completely decohering channel or it is a nontrivial isotropic channel. For the qubit case this propertiy is additionally characteristic to the completely decohering channel or the commutativity-preserving unital channel. In particular, the exact forms of the completely decohering channel and the commutativity-preserving unital qubit channel are proposed. Consequently, our results confirm and improve the conjecture proposed by X. Hu et al. for the case of d3d\geq3 and improve the result proposed by A. Streltsov et al. for the qubit case. Furthermore, it is shown that a local channel nullifies QD in any state if and only if it is a completely decohering channel. Based on our results, some protocols of quantum information processing issues associated with QD, especially for the qubit case, would be experimentally accessible.Comment: 8 page

    Effects of tai chi on postural control during dual-task stair negotiation in knee osteoarthritis : a randomised controlled trial protocol

    Stair ascent and descent require complex integration between sensory and motor systems; individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) have an elevated risk for falls and fall injuries, which may be in part due to poor dynamic postural control during locomotion. Tai chi exercise has been shown to reduce fall risks in the ageing population and is recommended as one of the non-pharmocological therapies for people with KOA. However, neuromuscular mechanisms underlying the benefits of tai chi for persons with KOA are not clearly understood. Postural control deficits in performing a primary motor task may be more pronounced when required to simultaneously attend to a cognitive task. This single-blind, parallel design randomised controlled trial (RCT) aims to evaluate the effects of a 12-week tai chi programme versus balance and postural control training on neuromechanical characteristics during dual-task stair negotiation. Sixty-six participants with KOA will be randomised into either tai chi or balance and postural control training, each at 60 min per session, twice weekly for 12 weeks. Assessed at baseline and 12 weeks (ie, postintervention), the primary outcomes are attention cost and dynamic postural stability during dual-task stair negotiation. Secondary outcomes include balance and proprioception, foot clearances, self-reported symptoms and function. A telephone follow-up to assess symptoms and function will be conducted at 20 weeks. The findings will help determine whether tai chi is beneficial on dynamic stability and in reducing fall risks in older adults with KOA patients in community. Ethics approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the Affiliated Rehabilitation Hospital of Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (#2018KY-006-1).     GaN nano-pyramid arrays as an efficient photoelectrode for solar water splitting.

    A prototype photoelectrode has been fabricated using a GaN nano-pyramid array structure grown on a cost-effective Si (111) substrate, demonstrating a significant improvement in performance of solar-powered water splitting compared with any planar GaN photoelectrode. Such a nano-pyramid structure leads to enhanced optical absorption as a result of a multi-scattering process which can effectively produce a reduction in reflectance. A simulation based on a finite-difference time-domain approach indicates that the nano-pyramid architecture enables incident light to be concentrated within the nano-pyramids as a result of micro-cavity effects, further enhancing optical absorption. Furthermore, the shape of the nano-pyramid further facilitates the photo-generated carrier transportation by enhancing a hole-transfer efficiency. All these features as a result of the nano-pyramid configuration lead to a large photocurrent of 1 mA cm(-2) under an illumination density of 200 mW cm(-2), with a peak incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of 46.5% at ∼365 nm, around the band edge emission wavelength of GaN. The results presented are expected to pave the way for the fabrication of GaN based photoelectrodes with a high energy conversion efficiency of solar powered water splitting

    Synthesis of β-SiAlON whiskers: dependence of uniform morphology upon preparation conditions

    ß -SiAlON whiskers with uniform morphology were prepared using reaction sintering method under different conditions. The effect of preparing conditions on the morphology of ß -SiAlON whiskers was systematically studied by SEM, XRD, TEM and HRTEM. The results showed that single crystalline ß -SiAlON whiskers with uniform morphology were successfully fabricated at 1773 K for 6 h under flowing nitrogen atmosphere. The well synthesised whiskers were of several hundreds of nanometres in diameter and a few hundreds of micrometres in length. Although the morphology and its size distribution are mainly determined by the reaction temperature and holding time, they can also be tailored by controlling the reaction atmosphere. The ratio of staring materials has no significant influence on the morphology of ß -SiAlON whiskers. The growth of ß -SiAlON whiskers follows a vapour–solid mechanism, and the formation of the belt-like whiskers is attributed to an anisotropic growth at the early nucleation/growth stage

    Effect of Nanosilica on the Sulfate Attack Resistivity of Cement Mortar

    The effect of nanosilica on the sulfate attack resistivity of cement mortar was investigated through study on the mechanical property evolution and the length change of the cement mortar under 5 wt.% sodium sulfate for 6 months. Meanwhile, the effects were compared with those of fly ash-replacement mortar. Results showed that by taking the advantages of nanosilica and fly ash in improving the property of cement mortar at early and later ages, the sulfate attack resistance of cement mortar can be enhanced in mechanical property increase and expansion reduction. Further, it implies that a combination of both pozzolans could enhance the sulfate attack resistivity of cement-based materials

    Comparison of Two Ventilation Systems in a Chinese Commercial Kitchen

    A numerical simulation of an indoor thermal environment in a Chinese commercial kitchen has been carried out using indoor zero-equation turbulence model. Two different ventilation systems in a Chinese commercial kitchen have been simulated. The results calculated for two different models show the airflow, temperature distribution and human thermal comfort index-PMV and PPD value. The simulation results indicate that both methods are capable of enhancing the capture and containment performance of cooking effluent effectively. Under the first condition, not only is unnecessary cooling load reduced and energy consumption of the air conditioning system economized, but a perceived thermal comfort environment can be provided. However, the supply air velocity and air temperature of the spot diffuser are restricted. In contrast, the perceived level of thermal comfort is not improved under the second circumstance. Further, the energy consumption of this case is higher than the former. Finally, the indoor thermal environmental properties have been analyzed
