Neutron depolarization studies of Pd-Ni-Fe-P alloy
Bulk metallic glasses based on the quaternary alloy Pd-Ni-Fe-P exhibit interesting phase behavior depending on temperature and applied magnetic field. Previous work has suggested that a range of magnetic phases including paramagnetic, superparamagnetic, ferromagnetic and spin glass can be observed in this system. We have applied one dimensional neutron depolarization to explore the correlation of magnetic moments in Pd40Ni22.5Fe17.5P20 alloy as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The results provided evidence for correlation lengths of ~ 200 Å. The nature of the correlations and the formation mechanism of the induced ferromagnetic phase are discusse
Mutual synchronization and clustering in randomly coupled chaotic dynamical networks
We introduce and study systems of randomly coupled maps (RCM) where the
relevant parameter is the degree of connectivity in the system. Global
(almost-) synchronized states are found (equivalent to the synchronization
observed in globally coupled maps) until a certain critical threshold for the
connectivity is reached. We further show that not only the average
connectivity, but also the architecture of the couplings is responsible for the
cluster structure observed. We analyse the different phases of the system and
use various correlation measures in order to detect ordered non-synchronized
states. Finally, it is shown that the system displays a dynamical hierarchical
clustering which allows the definition of emerging graphs.Comment: 13 pages, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Vertical transport and electroluminescence in InAs/GaSb/InAs structures: GaSb thickness and hydrostatic pressure studies
We have measured the current-voltage (I-V) of type II InAs/GaSb/InAs double
heterojunctions (DHETs) with 'GaAs like' interface bonding and GaSb thickness
between 0-1200 \AA. A negative differential resistance (NDR) is observed for
all DHETs with GaSb thickness 60 \AA below which a dramatic change in the
shape of the I-V and a marked hysteresis is observed. The temperature
dependence of the I-V is found to be very strong below this critical GaSb
thickness. The I-V characteristics of selected DHETs are also presented under
hydrostatic pressures up to 11 kbar. Finally, a mid infra-red
electroluminescence is observed at 1 bar with a threshold at the NDR valley
bias. The band profile calculations presented in the analysis are markedly
different to those given in the literature, and arise due to the positive
charge that it is argued will build up in the GaSb layer under bias. We
conclude that the dominant conduction mechanism in DHETs is most likely to
arise out of an inelastic electron-heavy-hole interaction similar to that
observed in single heterojunctions (SHETs) with 'GaAs like' interface bonding,
and not out of resonant electron-light-hole tunnelling as proposed by Yu et al.
A Zener tunnelling mechanism is shown to contribute to the background current
beyond NDR.Comment: 8 pages 12 fig
A superior drug carrier – aponeocarzinostatin in partially unfolded state fully protects the labile antitumor enediyne

Abstract

Background

Neocarzinostatin is a potent antitumor drug consisting of an enediyne chromophore and a protein carrier.

Methods

We characterized an intermediate in the equilibrium unfolding pathway of aponeocarzinostatin, using a variety of biophysical techniques including 1-anilino-8-napthalene sulfonate binding studies, size-exclusion fast protein liquid chromatography, intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence, circular dichroism, and 1H-15N heteronuclear single quantum coherence spectroscopy.

Results

The partially unfolded protein is in molten globule-like state, in which ~60% and ~20% tertiary and secondary structure is disrupted respectively. Despite lacking a fully coordinated tertiary structure for assembling a functional binding cleft, the protein in molten globule-like state is still able to fully protect the labile chromophore. Titration of chromophore leads the partially denatured apoprotein to fold into its native state.

Conclusion

These findings bring insight into conserving mechanism of neocarzinostatin under harsh environment, where even the partially denatured apoprotein exhibits protective effect, confirming the superiority of the drug carrier.</p
Global Incidence and mortality of oesophageal cancer and their correlation with socioeconomic indicators temporal patterns and trends in 41 countries
Oesophageal cancers (adenocarcinomas [AC] and squamous cell carcinomas [SCC]) are characterized by high incidence/mortality in many countries. We aimed to delineate its global incidence and mortality, and studied whether socioeconomic development and its incidence rate were correlated. The age-standardized rates (ASRs) of incidence and mortality of this medical condition in 2012 for 184 nations from the GLOBOCAN database; national databases capturing incidence rates, and the WHO mortality database were examined. Their correlations with two indicators of socioeconomic development were evaluated. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to generate trends. The ratio between the ASR of AC and SCC was strongly correlated with HDI (r = 0.535 [men]; r = 0.661 [women]) and GDP (r = 0.594 [men]; r = 0.550 [women], both p < 0.001). Countries that reported the largest reduction in incidence in male included Poland (Average Annual Percent Change [AAPC] = −7.1, 95%C.I. = −12,−1.9) and Singapore (AAPC = −5.8, 95%C.I. = −9.5,−1.9), whereas for women the greatest decline was seen in Singapore (AAPC = −12.3, 95%C.I. = −17.3,−6.9) and China (AAPC = −5.6, 95%C.I. = −7.6,−3.4). The Philippines (AAPC = 4.3, 95%C.I. = 2,6.6) and Bulgaria (AAPC = 2.8, 95%C.I. = 0.5,5.1) had a significant mortality increase in men; whilst Columbia (AAPC = −6.1, 95%C.I. = −7.5,−4.6) and Slovenia (AAPC = −4.6, 95%C.I. = −7.9,−1.3) reported mortality decline in women. These findings inform individuals at increased risk for primary prevention

Radio-Frequency Beam Conditioner for Fast-Wave Free-Electron Generators of Coherent Radiation
A method for conditioning electron beams is proposed, making use of the TM{sub 210} mode of microwave cavities, to reduce the axial velocity spread within the beam, in order to enhance gain in resonant electron beam devices, such as the free-electron laser (FEL). Effectively, a conditioner removes the restriction on beam emittance. The conditioner is analyzed using a simple model for beam transport and ideal RF cavities. Analysis of an FEL is employed to evaluate performance with reduced axial velocity spread. Examples of FELs are presented showing the distinct advantage of conditioning
Comments on Noncommutative ADHM Construction
We extend the method of matrix partition to obtain explicitly the gauge field
for noncommutative ADHM construction in some general cases. As an application
of this method we apply it to the U(2) 2-instanton and get explicit result for
the gauge fields in the coincident instanton limit. We also easily apply it to
the noncommutative 't Hooft instantons in the appendix.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX; an appendix added, typos corrected, refs adde
Modular Cosmology, Thermal Inflation, Baryogenesis and Predictions for Particle Accelerators
Modular cosmology is plagued by overproduction of unwanted relics, gravitinos
and especially moduli, at relatively low energy scales. Thermal inflation
provides a compelling solution to this moduli problem, but invalidates most
baryogenesis scenarios. We propose a simple model in which the MSSM plus
neutrino mass term is supplemented by a minimal flaton sector to
drive the thermal inflation, and make two crucial assumptions: the flaton
vacuum expectation value generates the -term of the MSSM and . The second assumption is particularly interesting in that it
violates a well known constraint, implying that there exists a nearby deep
non-MSSM vacuum, and provides a clear signature of our model which can be
tested at future particle accelerators. We show that our model leads to thermal
inflation followed by Affleck-Dine leptogenensis along the flat
direction. A key feature of our leptogenesis scenario is that the flat
direction is also induced to temporarily acquire a large value, playing a
crucial role in the leptogenesis, as well as dynamically shielding the field
configuration from the deep non-MSSM minimum, ensuring that the fields relax
into our MSSM vacuum.Comment: v3; 19 pages, 3 figures; added a reference for section
Localized states in 2D semiconductors doped with magnetic impurities in quantizing magnetic field
A theory of magnetic impurities in a 2D electron gas quantized by a strong
magnetic field is formulated in terms of Friedel-Anderson theory of resonance
impurity scattering. It is shown that this scattering results in an appearance
of bound Landau states with zero angular moment between the Landau subbands.
The resonance scattering is spin selective, and it results in a strong spin
polarization of Landau states, as well as in a noticeable magnetic field
dependence of the factor and the crystal field splitting of the impurity
levels.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures Submitted to Physical Review B This version is

Nonlinear superhorizon perturbations of non-canonical scalar field
We develop a theory of non-linear cosmological perturbations at superhorizon
scales for a scalar field with a Lagrangian of the form , where
and is the scalar field. We
employ the ADM formalism and the spatial gradient expansion approach to obtain
general solutions valid up to the second order in the gradient expansion. This
formulation can be applied to, for example, DBI inflation models to investigate
superhorizon evolution of non-Gaussianities. With slight modification, we also
obtain general solutions valid up to the same order for a perfect fluid with a
general equation of state .Comment: 14 page
