Uni3D: Exploring Unified 3D Representation at Scale
Scaling up representations for images or text has been extensively
investigated in the past few years and has led to revolutions in learning
vision and language. However, scalable representation for 3D objects and scenes
is relatively unexplored. In this work, we present Uni3D, a 3D foundation model
to explore the unified 3D representation at scale. Uni3D uses a 2D initialized
ViT end-to-end pretrained to align the 3D point cloud features with the
image-text aligned features. Via the simple architecture and pretext task,
Uni3D can leverage abundant 2D pretrained models as initialization and
image-text aligned models as the target, unlocking the great potential of 2D
models and scaling-up strategies to the 3D world. We efficiently scale up Uni3D
to one billion parameters, and set new records on a broad range of 3D tasks,
such as zero-shot classification, few-shot classification, open-world
understanding and part segmentation. We show that the strong Uni3D
representation also enables applications such as 3D painting and retrieval in
the wild. We believe that Uni3D provides a new direction for exploring both
scaling up and efficiency of the representation in 3D domain.Comment: Code and Demo: https://github.com/baaivision/Uni3
Generative Pretraining in Multimodality
We present Emu, a Transformer-based multimodal foundation model, which can
seamlessly generate images and texts in multimodal context. This omnivore model
can take in any single-modality or multimodal data input indiscriminately
(e.g., interleaved image, text and video) through a one-model-for-all
autoregressive training process. First, visual signals are encoded into
embeddings, and together with text tokens form an interleaved input sequence.
Emu is then end-to-end trained with a unified objective of classifying the next
text token or regressing the next visual embedding in the multimodal sequence.
This versatile multimodality empowers the exploration of diverse pretraining
data sources at scale, such as videos with interleaved frames and text,
webpages with interleaved images and text, as well as web-scale image-text
pairs and video-text pairs. Emu can serve as a generalist multimodal interface
for both image-to-text and text-to-image tasks, and supports in-context image
and text generation. Across a broad range of zero-shot/few-shot tasks including
image captioning, visual question answering, video question answering and
text-to-image generation, Emu demonstrates superb performance compared to
state-of-the-art large multimodal models. Extended capabilities such as
multimodal assistants via instruction tuning are also demonstrated with
impressive performance.Comment: Code and Demo: https://github.com/baaivision/Em
A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis of the antibiotic treatment courses in AECOPD
Background: No consensus exists on the antibiotic treatment course for patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Former studies indicate that shorter courses might have the same efficacy with fewer adverse events, which is inconsistent with guidelines and general practice. Existing evidence allows us to conduct a systematic review and Bayesian analysis on this topic. Methods: Four databases were searched from their inception to January 5, 2023. All statistical estimations were performed using R. “Gemtc” was the core package of analysis. CINeMA was used to assess the grade of confidence of the results. Results: Fourteen studies were included in the Bayesian meta-analysis. No difference in the clinical success rate of antibiotic treatment was observed from a super short course (1–3 days) to a long course (≥10 days). Considering the adverse events, the short course (4–6 days) might be the safest. The majority of results were of high or moderate confidence grade. Conclusion: Short course might cause the fewest adverse events. The clinical efficacy of antibiotics might not depend on the course length. Undeniably, more systematic explorations are warranted to investigate the clinical application of a shorter course of antibiotic treatment
Evidence-Based Study to Compare Daodi
Background. Daodi medicinal material is widely used in Chinese herb medication. However, there is a lack of systematic methodology for identifying characteristics associated with good quality and reliable efficacy of Daodi med-material. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to provide some evidence to further substantiate the use of Daodi medicinal materials. Methods. Seven relevant databases were searched before July 2014. Two evaluators were responsible for screening and categorizing the results. The data was analyzed with Microsoft Excel 2007 and SPSS 21.0 statistical software. Results. Overall, 107 articles were systematically analyzed. Of these studies, 55.1% (59/107) focused on the methodology to assess Daodi med-material, and 38.3% (41/107) were interested in med-material ingredients, soil physical and chemical properties, and the geological background system (GBS). Only 6.5% (7/107) of studies were mainly conducted as clinical trials and animal experiments. Conclusion. Comparisons between Daodi and non-Daodi materials have been studied mainly in terms of the ingredients or composition of medical materials, soil physics and chemistry, and the GBS, and some identifying methodologies have been created to identify Daodi attributes. Until now, there is still no consensus of comparison criteria between Daodi and non-Daodi medicinal material. Only a few studies were conducted through animal experiments and clinical trials to determine Daodi superiority
An Internally Validated Nomogram for Predicting the Likelihood of Improvement of Clinical Global Impression in Patients With Lifelong Premature Ejaculation Treated With Dapoxetine
Background: Although the introduction of dapoxetine has ushered in a new era in the treatment of premature ejaculation, many patients with lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) exhibit an unimproved clinical global impression even after treatment with dapoxetine.
Aim: To investigate independent predictors of the improvement of Clinical Global Impression (iCGI) in patients with LPE treated with dapoxetine and develop a nomogram to predict a patient's likelihood of achieving iCGI.
Methods: Data of 243 patients with LPE diagnosed at Xijing Hospital (Xi'an, China) and Northwest Women's and Children's Hospital (Xi'an, China) from January 2019 to May 2020 were analyzed. Independent predictors of iCGI were identified, and a nomogram was developed using R software based on a multivariate logistic regression model. The predictive accuracy of the nomogram was measured using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. The nomogram was calibrated by comparing predictions with observations.
Main outcome measures: The primary outcome was the patient-rated Clinical Global Impression of Change scale score after a 4-week course of dapoxetine treatment, which was collected via an online questionnaire. A Clinical Global Impression of Change score of ≥1 was defined as iCGI in this study.
Results: Patients with LPE with at least a bachelor's degree, a self-reported intravaginal ejaculation latency time of >1 minute, and an International Index of Erectile Function question 5 score of ≥3 were independent factors associated with achieving iCGI, whereas a Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool question 1 score of ≥2 was an independent factor negatively associated with achieving iCGI. The predictive accuracy of the nomogram, which was developed by integrating all variables with independent predictive significance, was 0.710 (95% confidence interval: 0.702-0.718). In addition, the calibration plot demonstrated excellent agreement between predictions and observations.
Clinical implications: If the predictive performance of our nomogram is further proven in multiple external validations, it can be used to select suitable patients for dapoxetine treatment, thereby reducing the number of patients discontinuing treatment.
Strengths & limitations: This study developed the first nomogram for predicting the likelihood of achieving iCGI in patients with LPE treated with dapoxetine. However, our nomogram was not externally validated using independent cohorts from other institutions.
Conclusion: This study identified several independent predictors of iCGI in patients with LPE treated with dapoxetine. An effective nomogram was developed to predict their likelihood of achieving iCGI. External validations using data of Western patients with LPE are required to test the broader applicability of this Chinese patient-based tool. Hou G, Gao M, Zhang L, et al. Sex plays a role in the construction of epiphytic bacterial communities on the algal bodies and receptacles of Sargassum thunbergii
The community structures of epiphytic bacteria on the surface of macroalgae are closely related to their host algae, but there is a lack of research on the differences between the epiphytic bacterial communities of male and female algae and their reproductive tissues. In this study, high-throughput sequencing was used to compare epiphytic bacterial community structures on the intertidal macroalgae Sargassum thunbergii and their receptacles between male and female samples. The epiphytic bacteria on the male and female algal bodies and receptacles had similar community structures with a large number of shared bacteria, but the samples clearly clustered separately, and the abundances of dominant taxa, specific bacteria, and indicator species differed, indicating that epiphytic bacterial communities differed significantly between the male and female S. thunbergii and their receptacles. In addition, the abundance of many predicted functional genes was significantly different between epiphytic bacteria on male and female algal bodies and receptacles, especially metabolism-related genes, and the abundances of predicted functional genes of epiphytic bacteria were significantly higher on both types of male samples than on female samples. Our study confirmed that the sex of the host algae influenced the epiphytic bacterial community structures on algae and algal reproductive tissues, and this role was mainly related to the host metabolism. The results reveal the role of host plant sex in the formation of epiphytic bacterial communities. These findings are helpful for obtaining an in-depth understanding of the construction mechanism of algae-associated bacteria
