Probing neutrino oscillations jointly in long and very long baseline experiments
We examine the prospects of making a joint analysis of neutrino oscillation
at two baselines with neutrino superbeams. Assuming narrow band superbeams and
a 100 kt water Cerenkov calorimeter, we calculate the event rates and
sensitivities to the matter effect, the signs of the neutrino mass differences,
the CP phase and the mixing angle \theta_{13}. Taking into account all possible
experimental errors under general consideration, we explored the optimum cases
of narrow band beam to measure the matter effect and the CP violation effect at
all baselines up to 3000 km. We then focus on two specific baselines, a long
baseline of 300 km and a very long baseline of 2100 km, and analyze their joint
capabilities. We found that the joint analysis can offer extra leverage to
resolve some of the ambiguities that are associated with the measurement at a

'Heaven starts at your parents' feet' : adolescent bowing to parents and associated spiritual attitudes
In a quantitative survey of religious attitudes and practices in a multi-religious sample of
369 school pupils aged between 13 and 15 in London, the practice of bowing to parents was
found widespread in 22% of adolescents spanning several religious affiliations and
ethnicities â especially Buddhists, Hindus and those of Indian, African and âOther Asianâ
ethnicity. Whether an adolescent bowed correlated significantly with spiritual attitudes such
as wanting to abstain from alcohol, hearing religious stories, being inspired by religious
festivals and liking the idea of seeing God in everything. Findings suggest bowing to
parents can have religious significance on all three levels of Jacksonâs Interpretive
Approach and therefore cannot be regarded as a âcultural accretionâ of religion. Study of
bowing to parents could form a unifying exercise in shared values for study of religion in
the plural classroom and facilitate community cohesion in certain religious membership
groups
Heisenberg-picture approach to the exact quantum motion of a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator
In the Heisenberg picture, the generalized invariant and exact quantum
motions are found for a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator. We find the
eigenstate and the coherent state of the invariant and show that the
dispersions of these quantum states do not depend on the external force. Our

Estimation and uncertainty analysis of impacts of future heat waves on mortality in the Eastern United States
Background: Climate change is anticipated to influence heat-related mortality in the future. However, estimates of excess mortality attributable to future heat waves are subject to large uncertainties and have not been projected under the latest greenhouse gas emission scenarios.
Objectives: We estimated future heat wave mortality in the eastern United States (approximately 1,700 counties) under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and investigated sources of uncertainty.
Methods: Using dynamically downscaled hourly temperature projections for 2057â2059, we projected heat wave days that were defined using four heat wave metrics and estimated the excess mortality attributable to them. We apportioned the sources of uncertainty in excess mortality estimates using a variance-decomposition method.
Results: Estimates suggest that excess mortality attributable to heat waves in the eastern United States would result in 200â7,807 deaths/year (mean 2,379 deaths/year) in 2057â2059. Average excess mortality projections under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios were 1,403 and 3,556 deaths/year, respectively. Excess mortality would be relatively high in the southern states and eastern coastal areas (excluding Maine). The major sources of uncertainty were the relative risk estimates for mortality on heat wave versus nonâheat wave days, the RCP scenarios, and the heat wave definitions.
Conclusions: Mortality risks from future heat waves may be an order of magnitude higher than the mortality risks reported in 2002â2004, with thousands of heat waveârelated deaths per year in the study area projected under the RCP8.5 scenario. Substantial spatial variability in county-level heat mortality estimates suggests that effective mitigation and adaptation measures should be developed based on spatially resolved data
The detached dust shells of AQ And, U Ant, and TT Cyg
Detached circumstellar dust shells are detected around three carbon variables
using Herschel-PACS. Two of them are already known on the basis of their
thermal CO emission and two are visible as extensions in IRAS imaging data. By
model fits to the new data sets, physical sizes, expansion timescales, dust
temperatures, and more are deduced. A comparison with existing molecular CO
material shows a high degree of correlation for TT Cyg and U Ant but a few
