Facial behaviour of analytic functions on the bidisk

We prove that if ϕ\phi is an analytic function bounded by 1 on the bidisk and τ\tau is a point in a face of the bidisk at which ϕ\phi satisfies Caratheodory's condition then both ϕ\phi and the angular gradient ∇ϕ\nabla\phi exist and are constant on the face. Moreover, the class of all ϕ\phi with prescribed ϕ(τ)\phi(\tau) and ∇ϕ(τ)\nabla\phi(\tau) can be parametrized in terms of a function in the two-variable Pick class. As an application we solve an interpolation problem with nodes that lie on faces of the bidisk.Comment: 18 pages. We have replaced an erroneous proof of Theorem 5.4(1) by a valid proo

A New Operation on Sequences: the Boustrouphedon Transform

    Get PDF
A generalization of the Seidel-Entringer-Arnold method for calculating the alternating permutation numbers (or secant-tangent numbers) leads to a new operation on integer sequences, the Boustrophedon transform.Comment: very minor change: corrected typo in author list. Telerobotic workstation design aid

    Get PDF
Telerobot systems are being developed to support a number of space mission applications. In low earth orbit, telerobots and teleoperated manipulators will be used in shuttle operations and space station construction/maintenance. Free flying telerobotic service vehicles will be used at low and geosynchronous orbital operations. Rovers and autonomous vehicles will be equipped with telerobotic devices in planetary exploration. In all of these systems, human operators will interact with the robot system at varied levels during the scheduled operations. The human operators may be in either orbital or ground-based control systems. To assure integrated system development and maximum utility across these systems, designers must be sensitive to the constraints and capabilities that the human brings to system operation and must be assisted in applying these human factors to system development. The simulation and analysis system is intended to serve the needs of system analysis/designers as an integrated workstation in support of telerobotic design

First order phase transition in the Quantum Adiabatic Algorithm

We simulate the quantum adiabatic algorithm (QAA) for the exact cover problem for sizes up to N=256 using quantum Monte Carlo simulations incorporating parallel tempering. At large N we find that some instances have a discontinuous (first order) quantum phase transition during the evolution of the QAA. This fraction increases with increasing N and may tend to 1 for N -> infinity.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. High-Ampacity Power Cables of Tightly-Packed and Aligned Carbon Nanotubes

We characterize the current-carrying capacity (CCC), or ampacity, of highly-conductive, light, and strong carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers by measuring their failure current density (FCD) and continuous current rating (CCR) values. We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that the CCC of these fibers is determined by the balance between current-induced Joule heating and heat exchange with the surroundings. The measured FCD values of the fibers range from 107^7 to 109^9 A/m2^2 and are generally higher than the previously reported values for aligned buckypapers, carbon fibers, and CNT fibers. To our knowledge, this is the first time the CCR for a CNT fiber has been reported. We demonstrate that the specific CCC (i.e., normalized by the linear mass density) of our CNT fibers are higher than those of copper.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

Finite size scaling of the correlation length above the upper critical dimension

We show numerically that correlation length at the critical point in the five-dimensional Ising model varies with system size L as L^{5/4}, rather than proportional to L as in standard finite size scaling (FSS) theory. Our results confirm a hypothesis that FSS expressions in dimension d greater than the upper critical dimension of 4 should have L replaced by L^{d/4} for cubic samples with periodic boundary conditions. We also investigate numerically the logarithmic corrections to FSS in d = 4.Comment: 5 pages, 6 postscript figure
