    A New Method of Measuring 81Kr and 85Kr Abundances in Environmental Samples

    We demonstrate a new method for determining the 81Kr/Kr ratio in environmental samples based upon two measurements: the 85Kr/81Kr ratio measured by Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) and the 85Kr/Kr ratio measured by Low-Level Counting (LLC). This method can be used to determine the mean residence time of groundwater in the range of 10^5 - 10^6 a. It requires a sample of 100 micro-l STP of Kr extracted from approximately two tons of water. With modern atmospheric Kr samples, we demonstrate that the ratios measured by ATTA and LLC are directly proportional to each other within the measurement error of +/- 10%; we calibrate the 81Kr/Kr ratio of modern air measured using this method; and we show that the 81Kr/Kr ratios of samples extracted from air before and after the development of the nuclear industry are identical within the measurement error

DOI: 10.3189/172756408784700734We present the results of preliminary investigations of globular moss growth on the surface of Falljökull, a temperate outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull ice cap, southern Iceland. Supraglacial debris has provided a basis for moss colonization, and several large (>500 m2) patches of moss growth (Racomitrium spp.) are observed on the surface of the glacier. Each area of moss-colonized supraglacial debris shows a downslope increase in sphericity and moss cushion size and a decrease in percentage surface coverage of moss-colonized and bare clasts. It is suggested that moss growth on supraglacial debris allows preferential downslope movement of clasts through an associated increase in both overall mass and sphericity. Thermal insulation by moss cushions protects the underlying ice surface from melt, and the resulting ice pedestals assist in downslope sliding and toppling of moss cushions. The morphology and life cycle of supraglacial globular mosses is therefore not only closely linked to the presence and distribution of supraglacial debris, but also appears to assist in limited down-glacier transport of this debris. This research highlights both the dynamic nature of the interaction of mosses with supraglacial sedimentary systems and the need for a detailed consideration of their role within the wider glacial ecosystem.Peer reviewe

    Interferometric Detection of Linear Polarization from Sagittarius A* at 230 GHz

    We measured the linear polarization of Sagittarius A* to be 7.2 +/- 0.6 % at 230 GHzusing the BIMA array with a resolution of 3.6 x 0.9 arcsec. This confirms the previously reported detection with the JCMT 14-m antenna. Our high resolution observations demonstrate that the polarization does not arise from dust but from a synchrotron source associated with Sgr A*. We see no change in the polarization position angle and only a small change in the polarization fraction in four observations distributed over 60 days. We find a position angle 139 +/- 4 degrees that differs substantially from what was found in earlier JCMT observations at the same frequency. Polarized dust emission cannot account for this discrepancy leaving variability and observational error as the only explanations. The BIMA observations alone place an upper limit on the magnitude of the rotation measure of 2 x 10^6 rad m^-2. These new observations when combined with the JCMT observations at 150, 375 and 400 GHz suggest RM =-4.3 +/- 0.1 x 10^5 rad m^-2. This RM may be caused by an external Faraday screen. Barring a special geometry or a high number of field reversals, this RM rules out accretion rates greater than ~ 10^-7 M_sun y^-1. This measurement is inconsistent with high accretion rates necessary in standard advection dominated accretion flow and Bondi-Hoyle models for Sgr A*. It argues for low accretion rates as a major factor in the overall faintness of Sgr A*.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ, 18 pages, 4 figure

    Current--Voltage Characteristics of Two--Dimensional Vortex Glass Models

    We have performed Monte Carlo simulations to determine current--voltage characteristics of two different vortex glass models in two dimensions. The results confirm the conclusions of earlier studies that there is a transition at T=0T=0. In addition we find that, as T0T\to 0, the linear resistance vanishes exponentially, and the current scale, JnlJ_{nl}, where non-linearities appear in the II--VV characteristics varies roughly as T3T^3, quite different from the predictions of conventional flux creep theory, JnlTJ_{nl} \sim T. The results for the two models agree quite well with each other, and also agree fairly well with recent experiments on very thin films of YBCO.Comment: 18 pages with 10 figures available upon request from R.     Low temperature relaxational dynamics of the Ising chain in a transverse field

    We present asymptotically exact results for the real time order parameter correlations of a class of d=1 Ising models in a transverse field at low temperatures (T) on both sides of the quantum critical point. The correlations are a product of a T-independent factor determined by quantum effects, and a T-dependent relaxation function which comes from a classical theory. We confirm our predictions by a no-free-parameter comparison with numerical studies on the nearest neighbor spin-1/2 model.Comment: Final version to be published in Physical Review Letters.     Derivatives and inequalities for order parameters in the Ising spin glass

    Identities and inequalities are proved for the order parameters, correlation functions and their derivatives of the Ising spin glass. The results serve as additional evidence that the ferromagnetic phase is composed of two regions, one with strong ferromagnetic ordering and the other with the effects of disorder dominant.
