    Origins of anomalous electronic structures of epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide

    On the basis of first-principles calculations, we report that a novel interfacial atomic structure occurs between graphene and the surface of silicon carbide, destroying the Dirac point of graphene and opening a substantial energy gap there. In the calculated atomic structures, a quasi-periodic 6×66\times 6 domain pattern emerges out of a larger commensurate 63×63R30∘6\sqrt{3}\times6\sqrt{3}R30^\circ periodic interfacial reconstruction, resolving a long standing experimental controversy on the periodicity of the interfacial superstructures. Our theoretical energy spectrum shows a gap and midgap states at the Dirac point of graphene, which are in excellent agreement with the recently-observed anomalous angle-resolved photoemission spectra. Beyond solving unexplained issues of epitaxial graphene, our atomistic study may provide a way to engineer the energy gaps of graphene on substrates.Comment: Additional references added; published version; 4 pages, 4 figure

    CsrA impacts survival of Yersinia enterocolitica by affecting a myriad of physiological activities.

    BackgroundA previous study identified a Yersinia enterocolitica transposon mutant, GY448, that was unable to export the flagellar type three secretion system (T3SS)-dependent phospholipase, YplA. This strain was also deficient for motility and unable to form colonies on Lauria-Bertani agar medium. Preliminary analysis suggested it carried a mutation in csrA. CsrA in Escherichia coli is an RNA-binding protein that is involved in specific post-transcriptional regulation of a myriad of physiological activities. This study investigated how CsrA affects expression of the flagellar regulatory cascade that controls YplA export and motility. It also explored the effect of csrA mutation on Y. enterocolitica in response to conditions that cue physiological changes important for growth in environments found both in nature and the laboratory.ResultsThe precise location of the transposon insertion in GMY448 was mapped within csrA. Genetic complementation restored disruptions in motility and the YplA export phenotype (Yex), which confirmed this mutation disrupted CsrA function. Mutation of csrA affected expression of yplA and flagellar genes involved in flagellar T3SS dependent export and motility by altering expression of the master regulators flhDC. Mutation of csrA also resulted in increased sensitivity of Y. enterocolitica to various osmolytes, temperatures and antibiotics.ConclusionsThe results of this study reveal unique aspects of how CsrA functions in Y. enterocolitica to control its physiology. This provides perspective on how the Csr system is susceptible to adaptation to particular environments and bacterial lifestyles

    The first enantioselective organocatalytic amine conjugate addition has been successfully developed. The application of LUMO-lowering iminium catalysis has enabled the highly chemo- and enantioselective 1,4-addition of a rationally designed N-silyloxycarbamate nucleophile (HOMO-raised) to α,β-unsaturated aldehydes. Imidazolidinone 2•pTSA was found to catalyze the addition of various orthogonally N-protected silyloxycarbamate nucleophiles to a range of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, affording synthetically useful β-amino aldehyde intermediates. The synthetic utility of the protocol was demonstrated in the rapid synthesis of enantioenriched β-amino acids in one operation and 1,3-amino alcohol derivatives in three operations

    Spin-Orbit Coupling in Iridium-Based 5d Compounds Probed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

    We have performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on a series of Ir-based 5d transition metal compounds, including Ir, IrCl3, IrO2, Na2IrO3, Sr2IrO4, and Y2Ir2O7. By comparing the intensity of the "white-line" features observed at the Ir L2 and L3 absorption edges, it is possible to extract valuable information about the strength of the spin-orbit coupling in these systems. We observe remarkably large, non-statistical branching ratios in all Ir compounds studied, with little or no dependence on chemical composition, crystal structure, or electronic state. This result confirms the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling effects in novel iridates such as Sr2IrO4, Na2IrO3, and Y2Ir2O7, and suggests that even simple Ir-based compounds such as IrO2 and IrCl3 may warrant further study. In contrast, XAS measurements on Re-based 5d compounds, such as Re, ReO2, ReO3, and Ba2FeReO6, reveal statistical branching ratios and negligible spin-orbit coupling effects.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Spectroscopic analysis of interaction between an EIT wave and a coronal upflow region

    We report a spectroscopic analysis of an EIT wave event that occurred in active region 11081 on 2010 June 12 and was associated with an M2.0 class flare. The wave propagated near circularly. The south-eastern part of the wave front passed over an upflow region nearby a magnetic bipole. Using EIS raster observations for this region, we studied the properties of plasma dynamics in the wave front, as well as the interaction between the wave and the upflow region. We found a weak blueshift for the Fe XII {\lambda}195.12 and Fe XIII {\lambda}202.04 lines in the wave front. The local velocity along the solar surface, which is deduced from the line of sight velocity in the wave front and the projection effect, is much lower than the typical propagation speed of the wave. A more interesting finding is that the upflow and non-thermal velocities in the upflow region are suddenly diminished after the transit of the wave front. This implies a significant change of magnetic field orientation when the wave passed. As the lines in the upflow region are redirected, the velocity along the line of sight is diminished as a result.     The Spitzer c2d Survey of Nearby Dense Cores: VI. The Protostars of Lynds Dark Nebula 1221

    Observations of Lynds Dark Nebula 1221 from the Spitzer Space Telescope are presented. These data show three candidate protostars towards L1221, only two of which were previously known. The infrared observations also show signatures of outflowing material, an interpretation which is also supported by radio observations with the Very Large Array. In addition, molecular line maps from the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory are shown. One-dimensional dust continuum modelling of two of these protostars, IRS1 and IRS3, is described. These models show two distinctly different protostars forming in very similar environments. IRS1 shows a higher luminosity and larger inner radius of the envelope than IRS3. The disparity could be caused by a difference in age or mass, orientation of outflow cavities, or the impact of a binary in the IRS1 core.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap

    The t system: a new system for estimating the total magnitudes of galaxies

    We present a new, but simple, procedure for estimating the total magnitudes of galaxies. This procedure involves the out-focusing of digital galaxy images numerically, the fitting of the resulting surface-brightness profiles with a single generalised profile model and the extrapolation of the fitted profiles to infinite radial distances. This new system, which we denote `t', differs fundamentally from the `T' system (of the `Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies' series) in that: (1) it enables a galaxy's luminosity profile to be extrapolated without the need for any prior morphological classification, and (2) it is applicable to images of widely different spatial resolutions (including unresolved ones) because it takes into account systematic effects due to differential image resolution. It also differs fundamentally from the Kron system in that: (1) it can be derived directly from surface photometry without the need to go back to the plate scans or CCD frames (unless the surface photometry is of high resolution and/or the galaxies being measured are very bright), and (2) it can cope with merged images (provided they are separable by image-segmentation software). Through worked examples, we demonstrate the stability of `t'-system total magnitudes with respect to morphological type, the seeing conditions at the time of observation, degree of smoothing and limiting isophote.
