    A Progress Report on the Performance of Growing-Finishing Swine Under Different Environmental Conditions

    Another series of trials have been completed on the effects of various floor types, number of pigs per pen and open versus insulated, ventilated housing on the performance of growing-finishing pigs. The floor types were: 10 0% slotted , 5 0% slotted, 2 5 % slotted, and concrete with a narrow, deep gutter across the end of the pen. The slats were 5 inch wide reinforced concrete. Pits under the floor accumulated the manure. Pen sizes were either 5 x 15 feet or 10 x 15 feet. Eight or 9 pigs were placed in the smaller pens and the number of pigs was doubled in the larger pens. The pigs used in these trials were SPF Hampshire, Yorkshire, and Duree crossbred pigs. A 22 x 22 foot house with an adjoining outside concrete pen was used to compare the performance of pigs reared in this environment with the pigs in the insulated, ventilated house. Bedding was used in this house during both trials and the pigs were watered outside. One of two groups in this house was fed inside and the other was fed outside

    Swine Housing Research - Southeast Experiment Farm

    The development of the Southeastern Experimental Farm has created the opportunity for studies in swine housing management. Initial steps taken to develop a program were the construction of three temporary structures, which were described in the 1963 Animal Science Mimeo Series. Results of the first summer study (A.S. Mimeo 63 -1) were reported. Daily gains and feed required per pound of gain were approximately the same among pigs on slotted floor, concrete floor with slotted dunging alley and concrete floor with bedding. More labor was required for the conventional concrete floor and sloping floor than was required for the completely slotted floor. In 1963 all were removed and the farm was repopulated with SPF (specific pathogen free) pigs. The uninsulated temporary house was moved to pasture for the two insulated houses were used for growing-finishing 1963-64 and the summer of 1964

    Swine housing is in an era of research, new ideas, and changes. Never before have we been more conscious of housing management and facilities for swine. Many swine producers are wondering if they should continue with the same facilities, or remodel the existing buildings, or construct a new building. If the producer decides to change or remodel, then a barrage of questions should be answered. Important considerations are: Complete confinement or pasture? What floor plan and manure handling method? Should the building be enclosed, insulated, ventilated, and how much automatic equipment? Perhaps we should make it clear in this paper that the authors are not suggesting a change should be made by swine producers, but rather swine can be profitably reared with good management under many conditions on pasture, in confinement, or a combination of pasture and confinement. Confinement rearing is relatively new and many new ideas are being tested. The purpose of this research is to provide information on some of these ideas

    Partially composite two-Higgs doublet model

    In the extra dimensional scenarios with gauge fields in the bulk, the Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge bosons can induce Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type attractive four-fermion interactions, which can break electroweak symmetry dynamically with accompanying composite Higgs fields. We consider a possibility that electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) is triggered by both a fundamental Higgs and a composite Higgs arising in a dynamical symmetry breaking mechanism induced by a new strong dynamics. The resulting Higgs sector is a partially composite two-Higgs doublet model with specific boundary conditions on the coupling and mass parameters originating at a compositeness scale Λ\Lambda. The phenomenology of this model is discussed including the collider phenomenology at LHC and ILC.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure

    Almost-zero-energy Eigenvalues of Some Broken Supersymmetric Systems

    For a quantum mechanical system with broken supersymmetry, we present a simple method of determining the ground state when the corresponding energy eigenvalue is sufficiently small. A concise formula is derived for the approximate ground state energy in an associated, well-separated, asymmetric double-well-type potential. Our discussion is also relevant for the analysis of the fermion bound state in the kink-antikink scalar background.Comment: revised version, to be pubilshed in PR

    Gamma rays from dark matter annihilation in the Draco and observability at ARGO

    The CACTUS experiment recently observed a gamma ray excess above 50 GeV from the direction of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Considering that Draco is dark matter dominated the gamma rays may be generated through dark matter annihilation in the Draco halo. In the framework of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model we explore the parameter space to account for the gamma ray signals at CACTUS. We find that the neutralino mass is constrained to be approximately in the range between 100 GeV ~ 400 GeV and a sharp central cuspy of the dark halo profile in Draco is necessary to explain the CACTUS results. We then discuss further constraints on the supersymmetric parameter space by observations at the ground based ARGO detector. It is found that the parameter space can be strongly constrained by ARGO if no excess from Draco is observed above 100 GeV.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Pinning of a solid--liquid--vapour interface by stripes of obstacles

    We use a macroscopic Hamiltonian approach to study the pinning of a solid--liquid--vapour contact line on an array of equidistant stripes of obstacles perpendicular to the liquid. We propose an estimate of the density of pinning stripes for which collective pinning of the contact line happens. This estimate is shown to be in good agreement with Langevin equation simulation of the macroscopic Hamiltonian. Finally we introduce a 2--dimensional mean field theory which for small strength of the pinning stripes and for small capillary length gives an excellent description of the averaged height of the contact line.Comment: Plain tex, 12 pages, 3 figures available upon reques

    On the recurrence and robust properties of Lorenz'63 model

    Lie-Poisson structure of the Lorenz'63 system gives a physical insight on its dynamical and statistical behavior considering the evolution of the associated Casimir functions. We study the invariant density and other recurrence features of a Markov expanding Lorenz-like map of the interval arising in the analysis of the predictability of the extreme values reached by particular physical observables evolving in time under the Lorenz'63 dynamics with the classical set of parameters. Moreover, we prove the statistical stability of such an invariant measure.
