Hydrogen in Type Ic Supernovae?
By definition, a Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) does not have conspicuous lines of
hydrogen or helium in its optical spectrum. SNe Ic usually are modelled in
terms of the gravitational collapse of bare carbon-oxygen cores. We consider
the possibility that the spectra of ordinary (SN 1994I-like) SNe Ic have been
misinterpreted, and that SNe Ic eject hydrogen. An absorption feature usually
attributed to a blend of Si II 6355 and C II 6580 may be produced by H-alpha.
If SN 1994I-like SNe Ic eject hydrogen, the possibility that hypernova (SN
1998bw-like) SNe Ic, some of which are associated with gamma-ray bursts, also
eject hydrogen should be considered. The implications of hydrogen for SN Ic

Population Studies. XIII. A New Analysis of the Bidelman-MacConnell "Weak-Metal" Stars - Confirmation of Metal-Poor Stars in the Thick Disk of the Galaxy
A new set of very high signal-to-noise (S/N > 100/1), medium-resolution
(R~3000) optical spectra have been obtained for 302 of the candidate
"weak-metal" stars selected by Bidelman & MacConnell. We use these data to
calibrate the recently developed generalization of the SEGUE Stellar Parameter
Pipeline, and obtain estimates of the atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g , and
[Fe/H]) for these non-SDSS/SEGUE data; we also obtain estimates of [C/Fe]. The
new abundance measurements are shown to be consistent with available
high-resolution spectroscopic determinations, and represent a substantial
improvement over the accuracies obtained from the previous photometric
estimates reported in Paper I of this series. The apparent offset in the
photometric abundances of the giants in this sample noted by several authors is
confirmed by our new spectroscopy; no such effect is found for the dwarfs. The
presence of a metal-weak thick-disk (MWTD) population is clearly supported by
these new abundance data. Some 25% of the stars with metallicities -1.8 <
[Fe/H] <= -0.8 exhibit orbital eccentricities e < 0.4, yet are clearly
separated from members of the inner-halo population with similar metallicities
by their location in a Lindblad energy vs. angular momentum diagram. A
comparison is made with recent results for a similar-size sample of RAVE stars
from Ruchti et al. We conclude, based on both of these samples, that the MWTD
is real, and must be accounted for in discussions of the formation and

The Formin FMNL3 Assembles Plasma Membrane Protrusions that Participate in Cell–Cell Adhesion
FMNL3 is a vertebrate-specific formin protein previously shown to play a role in angiogenesis and cell migration. Here we define the cellular localization of endogenous FMNL3, the dynamics of GFP-tagged FMNL3 during cell migration, and the effects of FMNL3 suppression in mammalian culture cells. The majority of FMNL3 localizes in a punctate pattern, with \u3e95% of these puncta being indistinguishable from the plasma membrane by fluorescence microscopy. A small number of dynamic cytoplasmic FMNL3 patches also exist, which enrich near cell–cell contact sites and fuse with the plasma membrane at these sites. These cytoplasmic puncta appear to be part of larger membranes of endocytic origin. On the plasma membrane, FMNL3 enriches particularly in filopodia and membrane ruffles and at nascent cell–cell adhesions. FMNL3-containing filopodia occur both at the cell–substratum interface and at cell–cell contacts, with the latter being 10-fold more stable. FMNL3 suppression by siRNA has two major effects: decrease in filopodia and compromised cell–cell adhesion in cells migrating as a sheet. Overall our results suggest that FMNL3 functions in assembly of actin-based protrusions that are specialized for cell–cell adhesion
Hypervelocity Star Candidates in the SEGUE G & K Dwarf Sample
We present 20 candidate hypervelocity stars from the Sloan Extension for
Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) G and K dwarf samples. Previous
searches for hypervelocity stars have only focused on large radial velocities;
in this study we also use proper motions to select the candidates. We determine
the hypervelocity likelihood of each candidate by means of Monte Carlo
simulations, considering the significant errors often associated with high
proper motion stars. We find that nearly half of the candidates exceed their
escape velocities with at least 98% probability. Every candidate also has less
than a 25% chance of being a high-velocity fluke within the SEGUE sample. Based
on orbits calculated using the observed six-dimensional positions and
velocities, few, if any, of these candidates originate from the Galactic
center. If these candidates are truly hypervelocity stars, they were not
ejected by interactions with the Milky Way's supermassive black hole. This
calls for a more serious examination of alternative hypervelocity-star ejection

Compact, modular and in-plane AOSLO for high-resolution retinal imaging
The adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) was first developed in 2002 and since then the technology has been adopted in several laboratories around the world, for both clinical and psychophysical research. There have been a few major design implementations of the AOSLO. The first used on-axis tilted spherical mirrors in a planar arrangement, and the second minimized the build up of astigmatism present in the first design by using a non-planar arrangement. Other designs have avoided astigmatism by using custom-made toroidal mirrors or by using lenses on-axis, rather than mirrors. We present a new design implementation for an AOSLO that maintains a planar optical alignment without the build up astigmatism using compact, reconfigurable modules based on an Offner relay system. We additionally use an off-the-shelf digital oscilloscope for data capture and custom-written Python code for generating and analyzing the retinal images. This design results in a compact system that is simple to align and, being composed of modular relays, has the potential for additional components to be added. We show that this system maintains diffraction-limited image quality across the field of view and that cones are clearly resolved in the central retina. The modular relay design is generally applicable to any system requiring one or more components in the pupil conjugate plane. This is likely to be useful for any point-scanned system, such as a standard scanning laser ophthalmoscope or non-ophthalmic confocal imaging system
The Nuclear and Circum-nuclear Stellar Population in Seyfert 2 Galaxies: Implications for the Starburst-AGN Connection
We report the results of a spectroscopic investigation of a sample of 20 of
the brightest type 2 Seyfert nuclei. Our goal is to search for the direct
spectroscopic signature of massive stars, and thereby probe the role of
circumnuclear starbursts in the Seyfert phenomenon. The method used is based on
the detection of the higher order Balmer lines and HeI lines in absorption and
the Wolf-Rayet feature at 4680 \AA in emission. These lines are strong
indicators of the presence of young (a few Myrs) and intermediate-age (a few
100 Myrs) stellar populations. In over half the sample, we have detected HeI
and/or strong stellar absorption features in the high-order (near-UV) Balmer
series together with relatively weak lines from an old stellar population. In
three others we detect a broad emission feature near 4680 \AA that is most
plausibly ascribed to a population of Wolf-Rayet stars (the evolved descendants
of the most massive stars). We therefore conclude that the blue and near-UV
light of over half of the sample is dominated by young and/or intermediate age
stars. The ``young'' Seyfert 2's have have larger far-IR luminosities, cooler
mid/far-IR colors, and smaller [OIII]/H flux ratios than the ``old''
ones. These differences are consistent with a starburst playing a significant
energetic role in the former class. We consider the possibility that there may
be two distinct sub-classes of Seyfert 2 nuclei (``starbursts'' and ``hidden
BLR''). However, the fact that hidden BLRs have been found in three of the
``young'' nuclei argues against this, and suggests that nuclear starbursts may

Hypocholesterolemic effect of \u3ci\u3eNostoc commune\u3c/i\u3e var. \u3ci\u3esphaeroides\u3c/i\u3e Kützing, an edible blue-green alga
Background Intake of an edible blue-green alga Nostoc commune var. sphaeroides Kützing (N. commune) has been shown to lower plasma total cholesterol concentration, but the mechanisms behind the hypocholesterolemic effect have not been elucidated. Aim of the study To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the cholesterol-lowering effect of N. commune in mice. Methods Male C57BL/6J mice were fed the AIN-93 M diet supplemented with 0 or 5% (wt/wt) dried N. commune for 4 weeks. Lipid levels in the plasma and liver, intestinal cholesterol absorption, and fecal sterol excretion were measured. Expression of hepatic and intestinal genes involved in cholesterol metabolism was evaluated by quantitative realtime PCR. Results N. commune supplementation significantly reduced total plasma cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations by ~20% compared to controls. Intestinal cholesterol absorption was significantly decreased, while fecal neutral sterol output was significantly increased in N. commune–fed mice. mRNA levels of the cholesterol transporters such as Niemann Pick C1 Like 1, scavenger receptor class B type 1, ATP-binding cassette transporters G5 and A1 in small intestine were not significantly different between two groups. Hepatic lipid contents including total cholesterol, triglyceride and free cholesterol in N. commune–fed mice were not significantly altered. However, the expression of cholesterol-modulating genes including sterol regulatory element binding protein-2 and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase were significantly increased in mice fed N. commune. Conclusions N. commune supplementation exerted a hypocholesterolemic effect in mice, largely in part, by reducing intestinal cholesterol absorption and promoting fecal neutral sterol excretion
Assessment of cefazolin and cefuroxime tissue penetration by using a continuous intravenous infusion.
A continuous intravenous infusion was used to assess the tissue penetration of cefazolin (14 subjects) and cefuroxime (15 subjects) in orthopedic surgery patients. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive a continuous intravenous infusion of cefazolin (mean, 178.6 mg/h) orcefuroxime (mean, 330.0 mg/h) at a rate estimated to achieve a target steady-state total concentration of 50 micrograms/ml in serum. The infusion was initiated 12 to 14 h before surgery, and blood and muscle tissue samples were collected intraoperatively at the times of incision and wound closure. Although there was a significant difference between the free concentrations ofcefazolin (at incision, 9.3 micrograms/ml; at closure, 9.2 micrograms/ml) and cefuroxime in serum (at incision, 26.9 micrograms/ml; at closure, 31.8 micrograms/ml), there was no difference in the total concentrations in muscle at either surgical incision (cefazolin, 6.1 micrograms/g; cefuroxime, 5.6 micrograms/g) or wound closure (cefazolin, 7.7 micrograms/g; cefuroxime, 7.4 micrograms/g). There was a significant correlation between the pooled free serum and total muscle concentrations for cefazolin (P = 0.001); however, there was no correlation between these variables with the pooledcefuroxime data (P = 0.403). These findings indicate that the free drug concentration in serum alone is not consistently predictive of the total concentration of cephalosporin in muscle
Repression of Proinflammatory Gene Expression by Lipid Extract of \u3ci\u3eNostoc commune\u3c/i\u3e var \u3ci\u3esphaeroides\u3c/i\u3e Kützing, a Blue-green Alga, via Inhibition of Nuclear Factor-κB in RAW 264.7 Macrophages
We investigated whether lipid extract from a blue-green alga, N. commune, modulates proinflammatory gene expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages. The cells were incubated with N. commune lipid extract (0–100 μg/mL) and subsequently activated by LPS (100 ng/mL). Quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that mRNA abundance of proinflammatory mediators, including TNF-α, COX-2, IL-1β, IL-6, and iNOS, was significantly reduced by N. commune lipid extract in a dose-dependent manner. Secretion of TNF-α and IL-1β into cell culture medium was also significantly decreased by N. commune lipid extract. Thin-layer chromatography-densitometry analysis showed that N. commune lipid extract contained approximately 15% of fatty acids. To determine whether the inhibition of proinflammatory mediator production by N. commune lipid extract is primarily conferred by fatty acids in the lipid extract, macrophages were incubated with 100 μg/mL of N. commune lipid extract or 15 μg/mL of a fatty acid mixture, which was formulated to reflect the fatty acid composition of N. commune lipid extract. The fatty acid mixture significantly reduced RNA abundance of TNF-α and COX-2, but to a lesser extent than did the N. commune lipid extract, suggesting the presence of additional bioactive compounds with an anti-inflammatory property in the lipid extract. As NF-κB is a major regulator for the proinflammatory gene expression, we measured its DNA-binding activity. DNA-binding activity of NF-κB was significantly reduced by N. commune lipid extract. In conclusion, our study suggests that N. commune lipid extract represses the expression of proinflammatory genes in RAW 264.7 macrophages, at least in part, by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB pathway
