Statistical Analysis of Spectral Line Candidates in Gamma-Ray Burst GRB870303
The Ginga data for the gamma-ray burst GRB870303 exhibit low-energy dips in
two temporally distinct spectra, denoted S1 and S2. S1, spanning 4 s, exhibits
a single line candidate at ~ 20 keV, while S2, spanning 9 s, exhibits
apparently harmonically spaced line candidates at ~ 20 and 40 keV. We evaluate
the statistical evidence for these lines, using phenomenological continuum and
line models which in their details are independent of the distance scale to
gamma-ray bursts. We employ the methodologies based on both frequentist and
Bayesian statistical inference that we develop in Freeman et al. (1999b). These
methodologies utilize the information present in the data to select the
simplest model that adequately describes the data from among a wide range of
continuum and continuum-plus-line(s) models. This ensures that the chosen model
does not include free parameters that the data deem unnecessary and that would
act to reduce the frequentist significance and Bayesian odds of the
continuum-plus-line(s) model. We calculate the significance of the
continuum-plus-line(s) models using the Chi-Square Maximum Likelihood Ratio
test. We describe a parametrization of the exponentiated Gaussian absorption
line shape that makes the probability surface in parameter space
better-behaved, allowing us to estimate analytically the Bayesian odds. The
significance of the continuum-plus-line models requested by the S1 and S2 data
are 3.6 x 10^-5 and 1.7 x 10^-4 respectively, with the odds favoring them being
114:1 and 7:1. We also apply our methodology to the combined (S1+S2) data. The
significance of the continuum-plus-lines model requested by the combined data
is 4.2 x 10^-8, with the odds favoring it being 40,300:1.Comment: LaTeX2e (aastex.cls included); 41 pages text, 10 figures (on 11

Dipole responses in Nd and Sm isotopes with shape transitions
Photoabsorption cross sections of Nd and Sm isotopes from spherical to
deformed even nuclei are systematically investigated by means of the
quasiparticle-random-phase approximation based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov
ground states (HFB+QRPA) using the Skyrme energy density functional. The
gradual onset of deformation in the ground states as increasing the neutron
number leads to characteristic features of the shape phase transition. The
calculation well reproduce the isotopic dependence of broadening and emergence
of a double-peak structure in the cross sections without any adjustable
parameter. We also find that the deformation plays a significant role for
low-energy dipole strengths. The strengths are fragmented and considerably
lowered in energy. The summed strength up to 10 MeV is enhanced by a
factor of five or more.Comment: 5 pages including 6 figure
Resonant Cyclotron Radiation Transfer Model Fits to Spectra from Gamma-Ray Burst GRB870303
We demonstrate that models of resonant cyclotron radiation transfer in a
strong field (i.e. cyclotron scattering) can account for spectral lines seen at
two epochs, denoted S1 and S2, in the Ginga data for GRB870303. Using a
generalized version of the Monte Carlo code of Wang et al. (1988,1989b), we
model line formation by injecting continuum photons into a static
plane-parallel slab of electrons threaded by a strong neutron star magnetic
field (~ 10^12 G) which may be oriented at an arbitrary angle relative to the
slab normal. We examine two source geometries, which we denote "1-0" and "1-1,"
with the numbers representing the relative electron column densities above and
below the continuum photon source plane. We compare azimuthally symmetric
models, i.e. models in which the magnetic field is parallel to the slab normal,
with models having more general magnetic field orientations. If the bursting
source has a simple dipole field, these two model classes represent line
formation at the magnetic pole, or elsewhere on the stellar surface. We find
that the data of S1 and S2, considered individually, are consistent with both
geometries, and with all magnetic field orientations, with the exception that
the S1 data clearly favor line formation away from a polar cap in the 1-1
geometry, with the best-fit model placing the line-forming region at the
magnetic equator. Within both geometries, fits to the combined (S1+S2) data
marginally favor models which feature equatorial line formation, and in which
the observer's orientation with respect to the slab changes between the two
epochs. We interpret this change as being due to neutron star rotation, and we
place limits on the rotation period.Comment: LaTeX2e (aastex.cls included); 45 pages text, 17 figures (on 21

A Necessary Condition for existence of Lie Symmetries in Quasihomogeneous Systems of Ordinary Differential Equations
Lie symmetries for ordinary differential equations are studied. In systems of
ordinary differential equations, there do not always exist non-trivial Lie
symmetries around equilibrium points. We present a necessary condition for
existence of Lie symmetries analytic in the neighbourhood of an equilibrium
point. In addition, this result can be applied to a necessary condition for
existence of a Lie symmetry in quasihomogeneous systems of ordinary
differential equations. With the help of our main theorem, it is proved that
several systems do not possess any analytic Lie symmetries.Comment: 15 pages, no figures, AMSLaTe
Dense Molecular Gas In A Young Cluster Around MWC 1080 -- Rule Of The Massive Star
We present CS , CO , and CO , observations with the 10-element Berkeley Illinois Maryland Association
(BIMA) Array toward the young cluster around the Be star MWC 1080. These
observations reveal a biconical outflow cavity with size 0.3 and 0.05 pc
for the semimajor and semiminor axis and 45\arcdeg position angle.
These transitions trace the dense gas, which is likely the swept-up gas of the
outflow cavity, rather than the remaining natal gas or the outflow gas. The gas
is clumpy; thirty-two clumps are identified. The identified clumps are
approximately gravitationally bound and consistent with a standard isothermal
sphere density, which suggests that they are likely collapsing protostellar
cores. The gas kinematics suggests that there exists velocity gradients
implying effects from the inclination of the cavity and MWC 1080. The
kinematics of dense gas has also been affected by either outflows or stellar
winds from MWC 1080, and lower-mass clumps are possibly under stronger effects
from MWC 1080 than higher-mass clumps. In addition, low-mass cluster members
tend to be formed in the denser and more turbulent cores, compared to isolated
low-mass star-forming cores. This results from contributions of nearby forming
massive stars, such as outflows or stellar winds. Therefore, we conclude that
in clusters like the MWC 1080 system, effects from massive stars dominate the
star-forming environment in both the kinematics and dynamics of the natal cloud
and the formation of low-mass cluster members. This study provides insights
into the effects of MWC 1080 on its natal cloud, and suggests a different
low-mass star forming environment in clusters compared to isolated star
formation.Comment: 42 pages, 5 tables, and 13 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Upper critical field in layered superconductors
The theoretical statements about a restoration of a superconductivity at
magnetic fields higher than the quasiclassical upper critical field and a
reentrance of superconductivity at temperatures in the
superconductors with open Fermi surfaces are reinvestigated taking into account
a scattering of quasiparticles on the impurities.
The system of integral equations for determination of the upper critical
field parallel to the conducting planes in a layered conventional and
unconventional superconductors with impurities are derived. The
values for the "clean" case in the Ginzburg-Landau regime and at any
temperature in the "dirty" case are found analytically. The upper limit of the
superconductor purity when the upper critical field definately has a finite
value is established.Comment: 10 page
A scalable Computer-Aided Detection system for microcalcification cluster identification in a pan-European distributed database of mammograms
A computer-aided detection (CADe) system for microcalcification cluster
identification in mammograms has been developed in the framework of the
EU-founded MammoGrid project. The CADe software is mainly based on wavelet
transforms and artificial neural networks. It is able to identify
microcalcifications in different kinds of mammograms (i.e. acquired with
different machines and settings, digitized with different pitch and bit depth
or direct digital ones). The CADe can be remotely run from GRID-connected
acquisition and annotation stations, supporting clinicians from geographically
distant locations in the interpretation of mammographic data. We report the
FROC analyses of the CADe system performances on three different dataset of
mammograms, i.e. images of the CALMA INFN-founded database collected in the
Italian National screening program, the MIAS database and the so-far collected
MammoGrid images. The sensitivity values of 88% at a rate of 2.15 false
positive findings per image (FP/im), 88% with 2.18 FP/im and 87% with 5.7 FP/im
have been obtained on the CALMA, MIAS and MammoGrid database respectively.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; Proceedings of the ITBS 2005, 3rd International

Contribution of Twist-3 Multi-Gluon Correlation Functions to Single Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering
As a possible source of the single transverse spin asymmetry, we study the
contribution from purely gluonic correlation represented by the twist-3
``three-gluon correlation" functions in the transversely polarized nucleon. We
first define a complete set of the relevant three-gluon correlation functions,
and then derive its contribution to the twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross
section for the -meson production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic
scattering, which is relevant to determine the three-gluon correlations. Our
cross-section formula differs from the corresponding result in the literature,
and the origin of the discrepancy is clarified.Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures minor corrections; version to appear in Phys.
