Lower Gravity Demonstratable Testbed for Space Robot Experiments

In developing mobile robots for exploration on the planetary surface, it is crucial to evaluate the robot's performance, demonstrating the harsh environment in which the robot will actually be deployed. Repeatable experiments in a controlled testing environment that can reproduce various terrain and gravitational conditions are essential. This paper presents the development of a minimal and space-saving indoor testbed, which can simulate steep slopes, uneven terrain, and lower gravity, employing a three-dimensional target tracking mechanism (active xy and passive z) with a counterweight.Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures, paper accepted for the SII 2024 (IEEE/SICE International Symposium on System Integration) (Updated references formatting

How did Children Perceive Cross-Border Distance Education?: From the Questionnaire Responses of Children Participating in the "Local Study to Encourage Wide Area Communication" in Higashihiroshima City

Distance education enables students to encounter others who are socially and culturally heterogeneous beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom space. However, the advantages of distance education have not been fully utilized in the past. Based on this awareness of the problem, the "Local Study to Encourage Wide Area Communication" in Higashihiroshima City was implemented. In this study, we examine how the children received the cross-border distance education. Specifically, we analyzed the questionnaires of the children (2,288 students in the 3rd and 4th grades) who participated in the study. Considering the results, the following three points were derived. (1) Distance education enables children to focus on and observe through a screen what they cannot see and hear in their daily lives. (2) Distance education enables children to create new knowledge through discussions with children who do not usually interact with each other. (3) Distance education enables children to learn about towns that they do not usually visit.広島大学大学院人間社会科学研究科からは「令和3年度研究科裁量経費・東広島市連携・広域交流型オンライン社会科地域学習支援事業」を交付いただいた

Mobility Analysis of Hopping and Tumbling Motion in Microgravity

    Get PDF
This paper presents the analyses of the tumbling and hopping mobility of a novel moving mechanism on small celestial bodies in microgravity. The robot consists of an inner motor with a flywheel and eight elastic spikes connected to the perimeter of the robot. The tumbling and hopping motion of the robot can be switched by controlling the torque of the motor. Hence, the robot can traverse a large region with high moving accuracy. In this paper, we conduct several numerical simulations to analyze the characteristics of the mobility by assigning various values of elastic and damping coefficient of spikes, and the torque of the motor. The results are useful to construct the feasible motion planning for real missions.International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation in Space (i-SAIRAS 2020), October 19-23, 2021, Los Angles, CA, USA(新型コロナ感染拡大に伴い、オンライン開催に変更

Tumbling and Hopping Locomotion Control for a Minor Body Exploration Robot

    Get PDF
This paper presents the modeling and analysis of a novel moving mechanism "tumbling" for asteroid exploration. The system actuation is provided by an internal motor and torque wheel; elastic spring-mounted spikes are attached to the perimeter of a circular-shaped robot, protruding normal to the surface and distributed uniformly. Compared with the conventional motion mechanisms, this simple layout enhances the capability of the robot to traverse a diverse microgravity environment. Technical challenges involved in conventional moving mechanisms, such as uncertainty of moving direction and inability to traverse uneven asteroid surfaces, can now be solved. A tumbling locomotion approach demonstrates two beneficial characteristics in this environment. First, tumbling locomotion maintains contact between the rover spikes and the ground. This enables the robot to continually apply control adjustments to realize precise and controlled motion. Second, owing to the nature of the mechanical interaction of the spikes and potential uneven surface protrusions, the robot can traverse uneven surfaces. In this paper, we present the dynamics modeling of the robot and analyze the motion of the robot experimentally and via numerical simulations. The results of this study help establish a moving strategy to approach the desired locations on asteroid surfaces.2020 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), October 25, 2020 - January 24, 2021, Las Vegas, NV, USA (新型コロナ感染拡大に伴い、現地開催中止

Desensitization of delayed-type hypersensitivity in mice: suppressive environment

    Get PDF
The systemic injection of high doses of antigen into a preimmunized animal results in transient unresponsiveness of cell-mediated immune responses. This phenomenon is known as desensitization. Serum interleukin 2 (IL-2) activity was found transiently in desensitized mice at 3 h after the antigen challenge. These mice could not reveal antigen nonspecific delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) 1 d after the challenge. Specific suppression of DTH was observed at later stages. Sera from 3 h desensitized mice showed suppressive effects on DTH in preo immunized mice. Administration of recombinant IL-2 into preimmunized mice led to the failure of development of DTH to antigens. These observations suggest that IL-2 plays an important role in the suppressive environment

A Preliminary Examination of Effect of Massage and Aroma Oil Massage in Foot Care Nursing

    Get PDF
AbstractFoot care nursing is attracting attention as a medically effective treatment for the foot lesions caused by such problems as diabetes or aging. In this study, we experimentally examined how aromatherapy affects human brain functions during foot care nursing using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). 11 subjects received both foot care nursing massages and aroma oil massages. We analyzed the changes in their oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) concentrations based on their brain activity by t-tests, and the t-test results showed significant differences between two kinds of massages in both the somatosensory and prefrontal association areas. The oxy-Hb concentration in both massages with and without aroma oil also showed a tendency to decrease with time. Our questionnaire results showed that our subjects felt more comfortable and relaxed while receiving foot care nursing with aroma oils. These results suggest that aroma oil massages are an effective foot care nursing tool and that foot care nursing is a medically effective treatment

Comparison of LEDs, Fluorescent Lamps and Incandescent Bulbs for Long-day Treatment of Forcing Strawberries as Affected by Respective Color Temperature

Long day (LD) treatment is frequently applied for horticultural crops, including strawberry, and sufficient effect similar to 4 to 6hours of day time elongation in the evening can be achieved by 1 to 3hours of night break in the mid night. Incandescent lamps (IC) have long been an important light source, but the general incandescent lamps are out of production and have been replaced with LED or florescent lamps (FL). Thus, we compared light sources and their color temperature (2,800K, warm white similar to IC; 6,500K, daylight) in different lighting programs. The effectiveness of 3 and 4cycles of alternate intermittent lighting, 30min on/30min off, were equal to and larger than 2hours of night break, respectively. Measured intensity of illumination (lux) at the canopy surface by 2,800K LED (6.9W) and FL (12W) was 1.50 and 0.95times as large as IC (54W), but leaf growth under LED and FL was similar to and less vigorous than IC, respectively. On the other hand, intensity values of illumination by 6,500K LED (6.9W) and FL (12W) were both 1.20times as large as 2,800K ones, but 6,500K light sources were much less effective compared to 2,800K ones. Daylight type LED and FL which have higher luminance efficiency but emit less red light compared to warm white ones, are not suitable as alternative light sources for IC
