Effects of nano-SiC addition on the superconducting properties of magnesium diboride
In this study, we report the results on phase formation, microstructures, and superconducting properties of a series of MgB2 samples with different level of SiC additions. The polycrystalline samples were prepared via solid state reaction by mixing magnesium, boron and silicone carbide powders according to the ratio of Mg:B:SiC = 1:2:x. XRD spectra showed that MgB2 is the primary phase while Mg2Si, MgO and MgB4, together with some unreacted SiC are the secondary phases as the addition increases. The presence of Mg2Si became more significant as the addition level increased. SEM images showed smaller grains as the addition level increases indicating more grain boundaries were formed. The Tc was as low as 30.5K for x=15wt%. The field dependence of Jc showed that x=1wt% sample gave the best performance at both 5K and 20K
Thermodynamics and evaporation of the noncommutative black hole
We investigate the thermodynamics of the noncommutative black hole whose
static picture is similar to that of the nonsingular black hole known as the de
Sitter-Schwarzschild black hole. It turns out that the final remnant of
extremal black hole is a thermodynamically stable object. We describe the
evaporation process of this black hole by using the noncommutativity-corrected
Vaidya metric. It is found that there exists a close relationship between
thermodynamic approach and evaporation process.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, added references, to appear in JHE
Thermodynamics of Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes in three dimensions
We show that all thermodynamic quantities of the Einstein-Born-Infeld black
holes in three dimensions can be obtained from the dilaton and its potential of
two dimensional dilaton gravity through the dimensional reduction. These are
all between non-rotating uncharged BTZ black hole (NBTZ) and charged BTZ black
hole (CBTZ).Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, version to appear in PR
UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for Fe+
The United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT)Widefield Infrared Survey for Fe+ (UWIFE) is a 180 deg2 imaging survey of the first Galactic quadrant (7° < l < 62° |b| <1°.5) that uses a narrow-band filter centred on the [Fe II] 1.644-μm emission line. The [Fe II] 1.644-μm emission is a good tracer of dense, shock-excited gas, and the survey will probe violent environments around stars: star-forming regions, evolved stars, and supernova remnants, among others. The UWIFE survey is designed to complement the existing UKIRTW idefield Infrared Survey for H2 (UWISH2). The survey will also complement existing broad-band surveys. The observed images have a nominal 5Ï? detection limit of 18.7 mag for point sources, with a median seeing of 0.83 arcsec. For extended sources, we estimate a surface brightness limit of 8.1 Ã? 10-20 W m-2 arcsec-2. In this paper, we present an overview and some preliminary results of this survey. © 2014 The Authors Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society
Slowly rotating black holes in the Horava-Lifshitz gravity
We investigate slowly rotating black holes in the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz (HL)
gravity. For and , we find a slowly rotating black
hole of the Kehagias-Sfetsos solution in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We
discuss their thermodynamic properties by computing mass, temperature, angular
momentum, and angular velocity on the horizon.Comment: 12 pages, no figures, version to appear in EPJ
Small anisotropy of the lower critical field and -wave two-gap feature in single crystal LiFeAs
The in- and out-of-plane lower critical fields and magnetic penetration
depths for LiFeAs were examined. The anisotropy ratio is
smaller than the expected theoretical value, and increased slightly with
increasing temperature from 0.6 to . This small degree of anisotropy
was numerically confirmed by considering electron correlation effect. The
temperature dependence of the penetration depths followed a power
law() below 0.3, with 3.5 for both and
. Based on theoretical studies of iron-based superconductors, these
results suggest that the superconductivity of LiFeAs can be represented by an
extended -wave due to weak impurity scattering effect. And the
magnitudes of the two gaps were also evaluted by fitting the superfluid density
for both the in- and out-of-plane to the two-gap model. The estimated values
for the two gaps are consistent with the results of angle resolved
photoemission spectroscopy and specific heat experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Extremal black holes in the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity
We study the near-horizon geometry of extremal black holes in the
Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity with a flow parameter . For ,
near-horizon geometry of extremal black holes are AdS with
different radii, depending on the (modified) Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity. For
, the radius of is negative, which means
that the near-horizon geometry is ill-defined and the corresponding
Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is zero. We show explicitly that the entropy
function approach does not work for obtaining the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of
extremal black holes.Comment: 18 pages, v2:some points on Lifshitz black holes claified, v3:

Prognostic value of different CT measurements in early therapy response evaluation in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer
OBJECTIVES: Patients with advanced stage colorectal carcinoma (CRC) display hepatic metastases on initial staging in up to 20% of cases. The effectiveness of chemotherapy is generally evaluated by computed tomography (CT) imaging using standardized criteria (RECIST). However, RECIST is not always optimal, and other criteria have been shown to correlate with pathologic response and overall survival. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of different CT measurement for response assessment after initiation of chemotherapy in patients with synchronous colorectal cancer liver metastases.
METHODS: Fifty-five patients with CRC and synchronous hepatic metastases were evaluated retrospectively at 2 academic centers. Different size, volume, ratio and attenuation parameters were determined at baseline and after 3 cycles of chemotherapy. The prognostic value of baseline measurements and of the change between baseline and second measurements was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier estimates.
RESULTS: Median time to progression was 279 days, median overall survival was 704 days. In this selective patient population, neither a significant prognostic value of initial baseline CT parameters nor a prognostic value of the change between the first and the second CT measurements was found.
CONCLUSION: Initial morphological response assessment using different CT measurements has no prognostic value concerning time to progression or overall survival in patients with synchronous colorectal liver metastases
Acupuncture for dry eye: a randomised controlled trial protocol

Abstract

Background

Dry eye is usually managed by conventional medical interventions such as artificial tears, anti-inflammatory drugs and surgical treatment. However, since dry eye is one of the most frequent ophthalmologic disorders, safer and more effective methods for its treatment are necessary, especially for vulnerable patients. Acupuncture has been widely used to treat patients with dry eye. Our aim is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for this condition.

Methods/Design

A randomised, patient-assessor blinded, sham (non-acupuncture point, shallow acupuncture) controlled study was established. Participants allocated to verum acupuncture and sham acupuncture groups will be treated three times weekly for three weeks for a total of nine sessions per participant. Seventeen points (GV23; bilateral BL2, GB4, TE23, Ex1 (Taiyang), ST1 and GB20; and left SP3, LU9, LU10 and HT8 for men, right for women) have been selected for the verum acupuncture; for the sham acupuncture, points have been selected that do not coincide with a classical acupuncture point and that are located close to the verum points, except in the case of the rim of the eye. Ocular surface disease index, tear film breakup time, the Schirmer I test, medication quantification scale and general assessment of improvement will be used as outcome variables for evaluating the effectiveness of acupuncture. Safety will also be assessed at every visit. Primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed four weeks after screening. All statistical analyses will be performed using analysis of covariance.

Discussion

The results of this trial will be used as a basis for clarifying the efficacy of acupuncture for dry eye.

Trial registration

ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00969280.</p
Extended ionized fe objects in the UWIFE survey
We explore systematically the shocked gas in the first Galactic quadrant of the Milky Way using the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Wide-field Infrared Survey for Fe+ (UWIFE). The UWIFE survey is the first imaging survey of the Milky Way in the [Fe ii] 1.644 µm emission line and covers the Galactic plane in the first Galactic quadrant (7◦ < l < 62◦; |b| ≲ 1.◦5). We identify 204 extended ionized Fe objects (IFOs) using a combination of a manual and automatic search. Most of the IFOs are detected for the first time in the [Fe ii] 1.644 µm line. We present a catalog of the measured sizes and fluxes of the IFOs and searched for their counterparts by performing positional cross-matching with known sources. We found that IFOs are associated with supernova remnants (25), young stellar objects (100), Hii regions (33), planetary nebulae (17), and luminous blue variables (4). The statistical and morphological properties are discussed for each of these
