Bank lending and monetary policy: the effects of structural shift in interest rates

    Get PDF
This paper provides evidence to show that the interest rate regime adopted by the monetary authority plays an important role in determining the effectiveness of the transmission mechanism of monetary policy via bank lending channel using Malaysian data. As part of the strategy to deal with the recent financial crisis, the Malaysian government introduced capital control measures which subsequently led to a structural shift in interest rates. Before the shift, interest rates were relatively high. The contractionary monetary policy achieved desirable results through the bank lending channel. However, responses of bank lending to interest rate changes were limited after the structural shift which characterises a period of low interest rate regime, rendering the bank lending channel ineffective.bounds test

Spatio-temporal mapping of variation potentials in leaves of Helianthus annuus L. seedlings in situ using multi-electrode array.

Damaging thermal stimuli trigger long-lasting variation potentials (VPs) in higher plants. Owing to limitations in conventional plant electrophysiological recording techniques, recorded signals are composed of signals originating from all of the cells that are connected to an electrode. This limitation does not enable detailed spatio-temporal distributions of transmission and electrical activities in plants to be visualised. Multi-electrode array (MEA) enables the recording and imaging of dynamic spatio-temporal electrical activities in higher plants. Here, we used an 8 × 8 MEA with a polar distance of 450 μm to measure electrical activities from numerous cells simultaneously. The mapping of the data that were recorded from the MEA revealed the transfer mode of the thermally induced VPs in the leaves of Helianthus annuus L. seedlings in situ. These results suggest that MEA can enable recordings with high spatio-temporal resolution that facilitate the determination of the bioelectrical response mode of higher plants under stress

An investigation into the recurring patterns of forex time series data

Countless theories have been developed by both researchers and financial analyst in an attempt to explain the fluctuation of forex price. By obtaining an intimate understanding of the forex market, traders will hopefully be able to forecast and react to forex price oscillations on-the-fly towards making a profitable investment. In this paper, an investigation into the underlying theory that there exists repeating patterns within the time series data which forms the basis of technical analysis is conducted. The assumption that certain patterns do develop over time and the forex market does not fluctuate in a random manner is used to establish the fact that history repeats itself in forex trading. The patterns and repetitions unveiled within the forex historical data would be an important element for forex forecasting

The magnitude and dynamics of interocular suppression affected by monocular boundary contour and conflicting local features

AbstractA monocular boundary contour (MBC) rivalry stimulus has two half-images, a homogeneous grating and the same homogeneous grating with an additional disc region. The outline/frame of the MBC disc is created by relative phase-shift, or orientation-difference. We found the increment contrast threshold and reaction time to detect a monocular Gabor probe elevated on the homogeneous half-image pedestal. The interocular suppression begins as early as 80ms upon stimulus onset. Moreover, the suppression magnitude is larger when the MBC disc is defined by orientation-difference rather than phase-shift, revealing the suppression caused by competing local features in addition to MBC

A preliminary framework of measuring music attractiveness based on facial beauty theory

Music is a performing art that put varieties of sound together to form a sequence of sound that people will find it interesting. In past, only those with certain level of musical knowledge were able to compose music as it is very time consuming to learn and practice musical instruments. Since the advent of modern computing, various methods were introduced to help music composition, such as Markov Chain (MC), Genetic Algorithm, Knowledge-Based system, and Cellular Automata. However, previous studies were paying less effort on evaluating the quality of music from human perception. The proposed system will apply a hybrid concept by combining few composition techniques to generate music with musical patterns. A framework on determining characteristics of a good music will be proposed in this paper as well

A Design of Focal-plane Compensation of Aviation Imaging Equipment Based on MS5534C

AbstractThis paper proposes an auto-compensation method for defocusing distance caused by temperature and pressure in aviation imaging equipment. As the host computer, the TMS320F2812 is the core controller and the digital pressure sensor MS5534C from Intersema Company is used as slave computer. The controller acquires the output of the temperature and the pressure from the sensor through MCBSP interface. By the change of temperature and pressure which results in defocusing distance, the software is adopted to compensate the defocusing distance and thereby keeps the stabilization of focal plane in aviation imaging equipment. The design proposal and the software flow is shown in the paper, furthermore the new system has simple interface, small size and real-time function. With many flight tests, the defocusing distance after the compensation of temperature and pressure is far less than the half focal depth of the optical system and it is fully satisfied with the requirements of imaging
