    Effect of cytokinins on growth and phenylpropanoid accumulation in Tartary buckwheat sprouts (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench)

    This study analyzed the effect of plant hormones, zeatin, 6-benzyl amino purine (BAP), kinetin, and thidiazuron (TDZ) on the growth of Tartary buckwheat sprouts and analyzed the fresh weight, shoot and root length, and production of phenolic compounds. All the hormone-treated plants at the lowest concentration (0.1 mg/L) showed the highest levels of growth parameters (fresh weight, shoot, and root length) when compared to the control. Among the various hormones treatment, the plant treated with 1 mg/L of BAP, kinetin, and zeatin showed the highest total phenolic level, whereas the TDZ showed the highest accumulation of total phenolic at the lowest concentration (0.1 mg/L). A total of 6 compounds were identified (4-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, rutin, and trans-cinnamic acid) were quantified by high liquid performance chromatography (HPLC) after treatment of plant with different concentrations of hormones. Among these individual phenolic compounds, at the higher hormonal concentration (1 mg/L) the rutin showed the highest accumulation in BAP, zeatin, and kinetin treated sprout, whereas in the TDZ treated sprout the rutin content was highest at the lowest concentration (0.1 mg/L). From these results, it is suggested that BAP, zeatin, and kinetin at the lowest concentrations might positively enhance the growth of buckwheat sprouts, whereas at the highest hormonal treatment the accumulation of the phenolic compounds was higher. However, in TDZ treatment the growth and phenolic compound accumulation were highest at the lowest concentration. From these results, it is showed that suitable concentrations might enhance the growth and phenolic compound accumulation in Tatary buckwheat sprout

    Feasibility of Ivy (Hedra helix) for landscaping in Seoul, Korea

    Due to the global warming, Seoul in Korea seems to be plausible to grow evergreen broad-leaved trees over the cold winter. This offers the planting options to create green environment. Thus, it became worth investigating what kinds of evergreen broad-leaved plants could stand in Seoul during the winter. Ivy (Hedera helix) has been chosen in the current study which is a well-known native and ornamental plant in Europe. It grows in warm condition in general. The current study tracked H. helix which is evergreen cover plant over winter in order to evaluate the possibility for utilizing this species as a climber or cover-plant in Seoul. We found that H. helix can survive over the winter and can be utilized to create evergreen environment in Seoul. It also implies that similar kinds of plants could be tested assuming the environment of Seoul is becoming more suitable for the plants originated from the warmer sites. H. helix is an option for elaborating outdoor environments in the city that lacks of green color

    Relative Etiologic Role of Hepatitis B Virus and Hepatitis C Virus in Chronic Liver Diseases and Hepatocellular Carc inoma among Age-Spec i f ic Groups in Ko rea: the Poss ib Ie Presence of Non-B, Non-C Agents

    Korea is one of the endemic areas of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. To investigate the relative etiologic role of HBV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in chronic liver diseases (CLD) including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among age-specific groups in Korea, we enrolled consecutively 673 patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH), 677 patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) and patients with HCC who had been diagnosed in the liver unit at Seoul National University Hospital. HBsAg and anti-HCV were tested using commercially available radioimmunoassay and enzyme immunoassay kits, respectively. From this study, we were reached at suggestion for the possible presence of non-B, non-C type CLD agent(s) by exclusion method. The prevalence rates of HBsAg were 45.3%, 62.5% and 69.3% in patients with CAH, LC and HCC, respectively. The general prevalence rates of anti-HCV in patients with CAH, LC and HCC were 27.3%, 19. 6% and 17%, respectively, and, however, in HBsAg-negative patients with CAH, LC and HCC those were 48.1%, 46.1% and 42.7%, respectively. The coinfection rates of HBV and HCV in patients with CAH, LC and Hec were 1%, 2.4% and 3. 9%, respectively. The rates of CAH, LC and HCC patients who were negative for both HBsAg and anti-HCV and therefore, serologically classified as non-B, non-C type were 28.4%, 20.2% and 17.6%, respectively. There was a significant differeence in mean age between B- and C-type, and Band non-B, non-C type patients with CAH (41.7 vs 54.5 and 50.4 years), LC (48.5 vs 60.1 and 54.9 years) and HCC (51.6 vs 60.4 and 56.1 years) (p < 0.001, respectively). Before the age of 50, the etiology of CAH and LC was almost exclusively HBV, while over the age of 50, the etiologic role of HCV and non-B, non-C was more predominant than that of HBV. In elderly (older than 60 years of age) patients even with HCC, HCV played an etiologic role as important as HBV. In conclusion, H8V is the most common etiologic agent of CLD in Korea. However, HCV and non-B, non-C infection is a more important etiology in elderly patients with CLD older than 50 years of age

    This study investigated the effects of three preparatory movements (squat, countermovement and hopping) on the sideward propulsive movement. Seven subjects were analyzed in 3-D to determine how fast they reacted to external signals, using three techniques, to reacl1 an aIming spot. The hopping and the countermovement types were considered better than the squat type in the propulsion. The hopping particularly showed the shortest duration from the external signal to take-off and also recorded high extension moments due to the pre-stretch mechanism for the push-off phase

    Non-Invasive Follow-up Evaluation of Post-Embolized AVM with Time-Resolved MRA: A Case Report

    We report the hemodynamic assessment in a patient with cerebral arteriovenous malformation using time-resolved magnetic resonance angiography (TR-MRA), a non-invasive modality, and catheter-based digital subtraction angiography (DSA), before and after embolization. Comparison of the results showed that TR-MRA produced very fast dynamic images and the findings closely matched those obtained at DSA. For initial work-up and follow-up studies in patients with vascular lesions, TR-MRA and DSA are therefore comparable

    Research on How Emotional Expressions of Emotional Labor Workers and Perception of Customer Feedbacks Affect Turnover Intentions: Emphasis on Moderating Effects of Emotional Intelligence

    Previous studies have used various external variables and parameters as well as moderator variables such as emotional intelligence have been to understand emotional labor and its related problems. However, a comprehensive model to study such variables’ correlations with each other and their overall effect on emotional labor has not yet been established. This study used a structural equation model to understand the relationship between employees’ expression of emotional labor and perception of customer feedbacks. The study also looked at how the perception of customer feedback affects emotional exhaustion in order to understand how emotional exhaustion affects job satisfaction and turnover intentions. Further, in order to fully understand the effects of emotion on emotional labor at the service contact points, this study developed and tested a model of emotional labor with four factors of emotional intelligence as moderating factors. Five hundred and seventy nine emotional labor workers in service industries in the United States were collected and 577 valid survey results have been analyzed. The result shows that there exists moderating effects of emotional intelligence on how employees’ Deep Acting and Surface Acting recognize customers’ reactions, both positive and negative, that would affect employees’ Emotional Exhaustion and Job Satisfaction, and hence, Turnover Intention. The result suggests that employees with better understanding of their own emotions, although they are more likely to recover from emotional exhaustion, experience a greater negative effect when there is a discrepancy between what they feel and how they should act
