Scribal glosses to Elde and Earth in London, British Library, MS Harley 913

    Get PDF
London, British Library, MS Harley 913, written in the early fourteenth century, contains a Middle English verse piece, Elde, about the misery of old age, and a bilingual poem, Earth, in English and Latin on the theme that humans composed of dust will return to dust. In the margins of these works are found eight glosses entered by the scribe of the two poems. What gives these glosses potential significance is that they are the only such marginal additions in the manuscript. This paper examines these glosses for clues about why the scribe entered them

The poem known as Satire from London, British Library, MS Harley 913: a new interpretation

London, British Library, MS Harley 913, written in Ireland in the fourteenth century, contains works in English, French and Latin. Among these is the English satirical poem commonly referred to as Satire. Although not only amusing but also cleverly composed, it has never been particularly popular. The issue has been that many modern readers find it difficult to understand its allusions to the social milieu and customs of a medieval Irish town. This paper attempts to uncover these allusions and proposes that the poem portrays and satirizes religious, merchants, traders and artisans in an Irish marketplace on Michaelmas Day

The poem Nego of London, British Library, MS Harley 913, as a satire on medieval disputes concerning philosophy and theology

Ancrene Wisse: possessed by a witch? : a note on the ownership of London, British Library, MS. Cotton Vitellius F vii

From the evidence of an inscription (imperfect because of a fire in 1731) on the last page of London, British Library, MS. Cotton Vitellius F vii, Emily Hope Alien concluded that the Vitellius manuscript must have been given by Joan Holand to Eleanor Cobham, the second wife of Humphrey Duke of Gloucester. In this paper I have re-examined the evidence. I propose that the French text of Ancrene Wisse in the Vitellius manuscript might have been written sometime while Joan Holand\u27s great grandmother, Joan de Geneville (1285-1356), was young, in or around Wigmore or Ludlow. Both places have a strong connection with one of the earliest copies of Ancrene Wisse in English
