Innovation Networks in Different Industrial Settings: From Flexible to Smart Specialization

    Get PDF
The key research objective of this paper is to analyse industrial specialisation by developing innovative networks linked to the region. Institutional and entrepreneurial innovation systems, smart specialisation and a network based research framework for entrepreneurship are used as conceptual foundations in the paper. Based on theoretical elaborations our analyses illustrate how certain interventions have stimulated regional development and innovation in two specific Scandinavian regions. Our results highlight that both regions have gone from interventions fostering flexible specialization, with the motive of staying resilient and competitive over time, to an approach based on smart specialization with a focus on one or a limited number of strong industries

Win-Win collaboration, functional product challenges and value-chain delivery: A case study approach

Functional products (FPs) comprises of integrated hardware, software, and a service support system components that are bundled together to offer higher customer value and possibility to generate revenue. However, offering FPs requires forming and managing win-win collaboration with diverse global value-chain organizations. Based on twenty explorative interviews at two Swedish manufacturing companies, we specifically focus on the collaboration between FP provider and its value-chain delivery organizations. Our result shows that such collaborations can lead to win-lose or lose-win situations. Furthermore, we identify six diverse relational challenges which could negatively influence the collaboration between FP providers and their value-chain delivery organizations.© 2013 The Authors. Managing competence development and acquisition in small manufacturing firms : differences between firms by organisational market performance

This thesis addresses how small manufacturing firms develop in-house competencies and acquire external expertise. It also relates in-house development and external aquisition to contextual factors. An important purpose of the study is to investigate whether there are any differences between firms revealing a favourable versus les favourable market performance. Utilising a multi-methodological approach, the results reveal that small manufacturing firms do invest significantly in different methods for competence development. Acquisition of external competencies preferably involve the firms' vertical partners. Regarding both utilisation of different methods for competence development, as well as co-operation with external expertise, small manufacturing firms ar characterised by a sharp division of labour between blue-collars and white-collars. Firms exposing a more favourable sales performance generally invest more time and money in competence development, address both broader fields of topics and broader categories of staff while employing a broader repertoire of methods for developing competence in the firm.Godkänd; 1997; 20061004 (evan

Science parks clusters and regional development

    No full text
A Science or Research park is generally regarded as an arena for either developing university - industry co-operation or as an arena for spin-out ideas from university research to ‘take off' during market introduction. To an increasing extent, however, Science Parks are also viewed as measures to promote a favourable regional development. This paper discusses (i) strategies related to the favourable development of Science Parks, and (ii) whether the concept of Science Parks may be used as a tool for regional developmentGodkänd; 2001; Bibliografisk uppgift: Publicerad i serien Arbetsrapporter, Institutionen för industriell ekonomi och samhällsvetenskap, avd. för industriell organisation, Luleå tekniska universitet, AR 2001:48; 20070207 (keni
