    BestConfig: Tapping the Performance Potential of Systems via Automatic Configuration Tuning

    An ever increasing number of configuration parameters are provided to system users. But many users have used one configuration setting across different workloads, leaving untapped the performance potential of systems. A good configuration setting can greatly improve the performance of a deployed system under certain workloads. But with tens or hundreds of parameters, it becomes a highly costly task to decide which configuration setting leads to the best performance. While such task requires the strong expertise in both the system and the application, users commonly lack such expertise. To help users tap the performance potential of systems, we present BestConfig, a system for automatically finding a best configuration setting within a resource limit for a deployed system under a given application workload. BestConfig is designed with an extensible architecture to automate the configuration tuning for general systems. To tune system configurations within a resource limit, we propose the divide-and-diverge sampling method and the recursive bound-and-search algorithm. BestConfig can improve the throughput of Tomcat by 75%, that of Cassandra by 63%, that of MySQL by 430%, and reduce the running time of Hive join job by about 50% and that of Spark join job by about 80%, solely by configuration adjustment

    Towards Fairer and More Efficient Federated Learning via Multidimensional Personalized Edge Models

    Federated learning (FL) is an emerging technique that trains massive and geographically distributed edge data while maintaining privacy. However, FL has inherent challenges in terms of fairness and computational efficiency due to the rising heterogeneity of edges, and thus usually results in sub-optimal performance in recent state-of-the-art (SOTA) solutions. In this paper, we propose a Customized Federated Learning (CFL) system to eliminate FL heterogeneity from multiple dimensions. Specifically, CFL tailors personalized models from the specially designed global model for each client jointly guided by an online trained model-search helper and a novel aggregation algorithm. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CFL has full-stack advantages for both FL training and edge reasoning and significantly improves the SOTA performance w.r.t. model accuracy (up to 7.2% in the non-heterogeneous environment and up to 21.8% in the heterogeneous environment), efficiency, and FL fairness.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Quality of Life and Health Status Among Prostate Cancer Survivors and Noncancer Population Controls

    Objective: To examine whether quality of life (QOL), health status, and the relationships between them varied by having a prostate cancer history. This study helps to inform the interface between aging-related health decline and the survival state among older men with prostate cancer, which is an important yet understudied public health issue. Methods: Hierarchical linear models were used to analyze the cross-sectional data from the nationally representative population-based Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. Using propensity score matching, survivors (respondents with prostate cancer history) and controls (respondents without a history of any cancer) (N=193 pairs) were matched based on seven socio-demographic and health-related factors. QOL was measured using the mental and physical component scores of the SF12. Health status included comorbidities, activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and depressed mood. Results: In bivariate analyses, survivors reported worse physical (42,72 vs 45.45 respectively, p=.0040) and mental QOL (51.59 vs 53.73 respectively, p=0.0295) and more comorbidities (3.25 vs 2.78 respectively, p=0.0139) than controls. In multivariate analyses, for both survivors and controls, better physical QOL was associated with fewer comorbidities (p<0.0001), no need help with ADL (p=0.0011) and IADL (p=0.0162), and less depressed mood (p<0.0001); better mental QOL was associated with no need help with IADL (p=.0005) and less depressed mood (p<0.0001). Conclusions: QOL of older men is affected by physical, functional, and psychological factors rather than by prostate cancer history. Clinicians need to attend to aging-related health issues when providing care for prostate cancer survivors to improve QOL

    Abstract Gearbox is an important mechanical device to transmit power. In order to ensure the normal operation of gearbox under the condition of top load, high efficiency and high precision, it&apos;s necessary to extract fault feature information using signal processing method and to further analyze and research gearbox fault. In the paper an improved de-noising method based on de-noising of singular value decomposition (SVD) is proposed, which sets threshold on the basis of standard derivation of the difference between adjacent singular values, and simulation is made. Through further research, combined it with ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), a new de-noising method based on EEMD-SVD (ensemble empirical mode decomposition and singular value decomposition) is derived, which is proved to be an effective de-noising method through simulation experiment. EEMD-SVD method is applied to fault diagnosis of gearbox and good results are achieved

    An electrophysiological signature for proactive interference resolution in working memory

    We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to study the temporal dynamics of proactive interference in working memory. Participants performed a Sternberg item-recognition task to determine whether a probe was in a target memory set. Familiar negative probes were found to be more difficult to reject than less familiar ones. A fronto-central N2 component peaking around 300 ms post-probe-onset differentiated among target probes, familiar and less familiar non-target probes. The study identifies N2 as the ERP signature for proactive interference resolution. It also indicates that the resolution process occurs in the same time window as target/non-target discrimination and provides the first piece of electrophysiological evidence supporting a recent interference resolution model based on localization data [Jonides, J., Nee, D.E., 2006.     FOXD1 Promotes Cell Growth and Metastasis by Activation of Vimentin in NSCLC

    Background/Aims: Forkhead box D1 (FOXD1) has a well-established role in early embryonic development and organogenesis and functions as an oncogene in several cancers. However, the clinical significance and biological roles of FOXD1 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain largely unknown. Methods: A total of 264 primary NSCLC tissue samples were collected. The expression levels of FOXD1 in these samples were examined by immunohistochemical staining. The expression of FOXD1 was knocked down by lentiviral shRNA. The relative expression of FOXD1 was determined by qRT-PCR, Western blotting and immunofluorescence image. The functional roles of FOXD1 in NSCLC were demonstrated cell viability CCK-8 assay, colony formation, cell invasion and migration assays, and cell apoptosis assay in vitro. In vivo mouse xenograft and metastasis models were used to assess tumorigenicity and metastatic ability. The Chi-square test was used to assess the correlation between FOXD1 expression and the clinicopathological characteristics. Survival curves were estimated by Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. The Cox proportional hazards model was used for univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: We determined that higher levels of FOXD1 were present in NSCLC tissues, especially in metastatic NSCLC tissues. FOXD1 was also higher in all NSCLC cells compared with normal human bronchial epithelial cells. A higher expression level of FOXD1 was associated with malignant behavior and poor prognosis in NSCLC patients. Knockdown of FOXD1 significantly inhibited proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro and tumor growth and metastasis in vivo, and it increased the apoptosis rates of NSCLC cells. Mechanistic analyses revealed that FOXD1 expressed its oncogenic characteristics through activating Vimentin in NSCLC. Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that FOXD1 was an independent prognostic factor both for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in NSCLC patients. Conclusion: Our results indicated that FOXD1 might be involved in the development and progression of NSCLC as an oncogene, and thereby might be a potential therapeutic target for NSCLC patients

    The emission positions of kHz QPOs and Kerr spacetime influence

    Based the Alfven wave oscillation model (AWOM) and relativistic precession model (RPM) for twin kHz QPOs, we estimate the emission positions of most detected kHz QPOs to be at r=18+-3 km (R/15km) except Cir X-1 at r = 30\+-5 km (R/15km). For the proposed Keplerian frequency as an upper limit to kHz QPO, the spin effects in Kerr Spacetime are discussed, which have about a 5% (2%) modification for that of the Schwarzchild case for the spin frequency of 1000 (400) Hz.The application to the four typical QPO sources, Cir X-1, Sco X-1, SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE 1807-294, is mentioned.Comment: Science China, Physics, Mechanics & Astronomy, 2010, 53, NO.

    HDL cholesterol is known to be inversely correlated with cardiovascular disease due to its diverse antiatherogenic functions. SR-BI mediates the selective uptake of HDL-C. SR-BI knockout diminishes but does not completely block the transport of HDL; other receptors may be involved. Ectopic ATP synthase β-chain in hepatocytes has been previously characterized as an apoA-I receptor, triggering HDL internalization. This study was undertaken to identify the overexpression of ectopic ATP synthase β-chain on DIL-HDL uptake in primary hepatocytes in vitro and on plasma HDL levels in SR-BI knockout mice. Human ATP synthase β-chain cDNA was delivered to the mouse liver by adenovirus and GFP adenovirus as control. The adenovirus-mediated overexpression of β-chain was identified at both mRNA and protein levels on mice liver and validated by its increasing of DiL-HDL uptake in primary hepatocytes. In response to hepatic overexpression of β-chain, plasma HDL-C levels and cholesterol were reduced in SR-BI knockout mice, compared with the control. The present data suggest that ATP synthase β-chain can serve as the endocytic receptor of HDL, and its overexpression can reduce plasma HDL-C

    Measurements of the Mass and Full-Width of the ηc\eta_c Meson

    In a sample of 58 million J/ψJ/\psi events collected with the BES II detector, the process J/ψγηc\psi\to\gamma\eta_c is observed in five different decay channels: γK+Kπ+π\gamma K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-, γπ+ππ+π\gamma\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-, γK±KS0π\gamma K^\pm K^0_S \pi^\mp (with KS0π+πK^0_S\to\pi^+\pi^-), γϕϕ\gamma \phi\phi (with ϕK+K\phi\to K^+K^-) and γppˉ\gamma p\bar{p}. From a combined fit of all five channels, we determine the mass and full-width of ηc\eta_c to be mηc=2977.5±1.0(stat.)±1.2(syst.)m_{\eta_c}=2977.5\pm1.0 ({stat.})\pm1.2 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2 and Γηc=17.0±3.7(stat.)±7.4(syst.)\Gamma_{\eta_c} = 17.0\pm3.7 ({stat.})\pm7.4 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures and 4 table.     Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in th p pbar mass spectrum from radiative J/psi-->gamma p pbar decays

    We observe a narrow enhancement near 2mp in the invariant mass spectrum of ppbar pairs from radiative J/psi-->gamma ppbar decays. The enhancement can be fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit Wigner fuction. In the case of the S-wave fit, the peak mass is below the 2mp threshold and the full width is less than 30 MeV. These mass and width values are not consistent with the properties of any known meson resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
