A NOVEL RECTANGULAR SLOT ANTENNA WITH EMBEDDED SELF-SIMILAR T-SHAPED STRIPS FOR WLAN APPLICATIONS

Abstract—A novel rectangular slot antenna with embedded self-similar strips is proposed for wireless local area network (WLAN) applications. The proposed antenna comprises a T-shaped monopole and inverted self-similar strips embedded in the rectangular slot etched on the ground plane. The measured results of the fabricated antenna show that the impedance bandwidths (VSWR < 2) are 180MHz from 2.36 to 2.54GHz and 920MHz from 5.05 to 5.97GHz, which cover all the 2.4/5.2/5.8GHz WLAN operating bands. And the radiation patterns are almost omni-directional in the azimuthal plane within the lower operating bands. 1

Capsule membranes encapsulated with smart nanogels for facile detection of trace lead(II) ions in water

A novel method based on capsule membranes encapsulated with smart nanogels is successfully developed for facilely detecting trace lead(II) (Pb2+) ions, which are hazardous to both human health and the environment because of their toxicity. The capsule membrane system is composed of a semi-permeable calcium alginate membrane and encapsulated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acryloylamidobenzo-18-crown-6) (PNB) nanogels. The semi-permeable membrane allows Pb2+ ions and water to pass through quickly, but rejects the encapsulated nanogels and polymers totally. As soon as Pb2+ ions appear in the aqueous environment and enter into the capsule, they can be specifically recognized by encapsulated PNB nanogels via forming 18-crown-6/Pb2+ complexes that cause a Pb2+-induced phase transition of PNB nanogels from hydrophobic to hydrophilic state. As a result, the osmotic pressure inside the capsule membrane increases remarkably, and thus the elastic capsule membrane isothermally swells upon the presence of Pb2+ ions in the environmental aqueous solution. The Pb2+-induced swelling degree of the capsule membrane is dependent on the concentration of Pb2+ ions ([Pb2+]) in water. Thus, the [Pb2+] value in water is able to be easily detected by directly measuring the Pb2+-induced isothermal swelling ratio of the capsule membrane, which we demonstrate by using 15 prepared capsule membranes arranged in a line. The Pb2+-induced swelling ratios of the capsule membrane groups are easily observed with the naked eye, and the detection limit of the [Pb2+] in water is 10-9 mol L-1. Such a proposed method provides an easy and efficient strategy for facile detection of trace threat analytes in water

Sensitivity Comparison of Two-photon vs Three-photon Rydberg Electrometry

We investigate the sensitivity of three-photon EIT in Rydberg atoms to radio frequency detection and compare it against conventional two-photon systems. Specifically, we model the 4-level and 5-level atomic system and compare how the transmission of the probe changes with different powers of the lasers used and strengths of the RF field. In this model, we also define a sensitivity metric to best relate to the operation of the current best experimental implementation based on shot noise limited detection. We find that the three-photon system boasts much narrower line widths compared to the conventional two-photon EIT. However, these narrow line features do not align with the regions of the best sensitivity. In addition to this, we calculate the expected sensitivity for the two-photon Rydberg sensor and find that the best achievable sensitivity is over an order of magnitude better than the current measured values of 5 uV/m/Hz. However, by accounting for the additional noise sources in the experiment and the quantum efficiency of the photo-detectors, the values are in good agreement.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore risk factors, clinical features, and prognosis of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) complicated by ischemic stroke (IS).MethodsWe conducted a retrospective analysis of all HCM patient data and a 1-year follow-up study.ResultsTotally, 506 patients with HCM, including 71 with IS, were enrolled. Older age (≥63 years) was associated with an increased risk of IS in HCM patients (OR = 1.045, 95% CI: 1.018–1.072, p = 0.001). Among 37 patients complicated by IS, 22 (59.5%, 22/37) manifested as cardioembolism (CE) subtype, and 13 (35.1%, 3/37) small artery occlusion (SAO) subtype, according to TOAST classification. In the acute phase, the IS patients presented with NIHSS 4 (interquartile range: 1, 10). Multi-infarction was more common than single infarction (72.7 vs. 27.3%), while cortical + subcortical infarction (CE group: 50%) or subcortical infarction (SAO group: 53.8%) constituted most IS cases. Additionally, the blood supply areas of anterior circulation (CE group: 45.5%; SAO group: 92.3%) or anterior + posterior circulation (CE group: 50%) were mainly involved. The 1-year survival rate of HCM patients with concomitant IS was 81.8%, and IS was associated with 1-year all-cause death in HCM patients (HR = 5.689, 95% CI: 1.784–18.144, p = 0.003).ConclusionOlder age is a risk factor for IS occurrence in HCM patients. Patients with HCM complicated by IS had mild or moderate neurologic deficits at disease onset. CE and SAO subtypes predominate in patients with concomitant IS, especially the former. Multiple cortical and subcortical infarctions are their neuroimaging characteristics, mainly involving the anterior circulation or anterior + posterior circulation. Is is a risk factor for all-cause death in HCM patients within 1 year

Diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of 25 patients with melamine-induced kidney stones complicated by acute obstructive renal failure in Beijing Children’s Hospital

A total of 25 Chinese patients aged 6 to 36 months hospitalised at Beijing Children’s Hospital due to melamine-induced kidney stones complicated by acute obstructive renal failure in 2008 were included in a study in order to diagnose and treat these special cases more effectively. Feeding history, clinical presentation, ultrasound findings, treatments and effects were summarised. Twelve to seventeen months follow-up was reported also. Ultrasound examination showed that calculi were located at the kidney and ureters. Stones were composed of both uric acid and melamine in a molar ratio of 1.2:1 to 2.1:1. Treatments providing liquid plus alkalisation of urine proved to be effective in helping the patients pass the stones. Surgical intervention was needed in severe cases. Renal function returned to normal in all 25 patients after various durations of therapy. Sixty-eight percent of the patients expelled all of the calculi within 3 months, 90% in 6 months and 95% in 9 months, without sequelae till now. Melamine-contaminated milk formula can cause kidney stones in infants, which should be diagnosed by feeding history, clinical symptoms and ultrasound examination. Composition of the stones was not only of melamine but also uric acid. Providing liquid orally or intravenously plus alkalisation of urine proved to promote the removal of the stones. Follow-up of 12 to 17 months after discharge showed no sequelae
