    Gender-specific association of MSA2756G with hypertension in patients attending a health facility in Ningxia Province, China

    Purpose: To investigate the distribution of methionine synthase A2756G (MSA2756G) in the hypertensive patients in northwest Chinese population.Methods: A total of 378 unrelated hypertensive patients attending Ningxia Peoples Hospital, Ningxia Province, China, were recruited for this study. We analyzed genotype by amplication - created restriction sites (ACRS) and polymerase chain reaction - restrict fragment length polymorphism (PCR - RFLP) in hypertensive patients, and inspected the relation of the genotype with hypertension by χ2 and t test.Results: The frequency of G allele was 10.25 % in the control group and 14.04 % in hypertension group; it was not statistically different (p > 0.05). In the male group, the frequency of allele G was 11.50 % in control group, and 8.79 % in hypertension group. There was no significant difference between control and hypertension groups (p > 0.05). In the female group, the frequency of allele G was 9.00 %, in control and 19.54 % in hypertension group (p < 0.05), while in the hypertension group, allele G was 8.79 % in males which is significantly lower (p < 0.05) than in females (19.54 %) .Conclusion: Allele G of MSA2756G is a risk factor for hypertension in female in this Chinese population of this study.Keywords: Hypertension, Methionine synthase, Polymorphism, Gender, Amplification-created restriction sites, Allele G, MSA2756

    Potential Logographic Dyslexics Identified via Self-Reporting during a Questionnaire Survey in Taiwan

    According to the patterns of difficulties of the dyslexics that have been reported in Western societies, a questionnaire in traditional Chinese was developed to carry out initial screening among Taiwanese. The questionnaire includes 30 items with four-point scales and 7 open-ended questions. Of the 2133 copies distributed, a total of 1599 questionnaires were collected which gives a 75.0% response rate and 1442 were completed. The mean of 30-item scores collected from 1442 participants is 87.99 ± 11.9. Among these participants, 9 self-reported potential logographic dyslexics have been identified. The individual scores of 30 items of the nine subjects were at least 1 SD to 4.5 SD lower than that of their counterparts. There are two potential logographic dyslexics families show genetic influence. Since there is no standard test for dyslexics, we developed a 30-item questionnaire that can be completed in 15-20 minutes on average. The questionnaire may serve as a low cost, initial screening tool and allows the potential probands to self-report while the formal diagnosis is not available

    A Novel Completely Local Repairable Code Algorithm Based on Erasure Code

    Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is widely used in massive data storage. Because of the disadvantage of the multi-copy strategy, the hardware expansion of HDFS cannot keep up with the continuous volume of big data. Now, the traditional data replication strategy has been gradually replaced by Erasure Code due to its smaller redundancy rate and storage overhead. However, compared with replicas, Erasure Code needs to read a certain amount of data blocks during the process of data recovery, resulting in a large amount of overhead for I/O and network. Based on the Reed-Solomon (RS) algorithm, we propose a novel Completely Local Repairable Code (CLRC) algorithm. By grouping RS coded blocks and generating local check blocks, CLRC algorithm can optimize the locality of the RS algorithm, which can reduce the cost of data recovery. Evaluations show that the CLRC algorithm can reduce the bandwidth and I/O consumption during the process of data recovery when a single block is damaged. What\u27s more, the cost of decoding time is only 59% of the RS algorithm

    An efficient ICT-based ratio/colorimetric tripodal azobenzene probe for the recognition/discrimination of F−, AcO− and H2PO4− anions

    The tripodal probe L was readily prepared via introducing rhodamine and azobenzene groups in a two-step procedure. Studies of the recognition properties indicated that probe L exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards F−, AcO− and H2PO4− through a ratiometric colorimetric response with low detection limits of the order of 10−7 M. The complexation behaviour was fully investigated by spectral titration, 1H NMR spectroscopic titration and mass spectrometry. Probe L not only recognizes F−, AcO− and H2PO4−, but can also distinguish between these three anions via the different ratiometric behaviour in their UV–vis spectra (387/505 nm for L-H2PO4−, 387/530 nm for L-AcO− and 387/575 nm for L-F− complex) or via different colour changes (light coral for L-H2PO4−, light pink for L-AcO− and violet for the L-F− complex). Additionally, given the presence of NH and OH groups in probe L, which can be protonated and deprotonated, probe L further exhibited an excellent pH response over a wide pH range (pH 3 to pH 12)

    Chinese herbal decoction as a complementary therapy for atrophic gastritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Chinese herbal decoction (CHD) has been extensively used in the treatment of atrophic gastritis (AG) in China and other Far Eastern countries. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the efficacy and safety of CHD in AG.Materials and Methods: Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane central register of controlled trials (central), VIP, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Sinomed, Wanfang data were searched (up to December 2015). Randomized controlled trials recruiting patients with AG comparing CHD (alone or with western medicine (WM)) with WM were eligible. Dichotomous data were pooled to obtain relative risk (RR), with a 95% confidence interval (CI).Results: Forty-two articles including 3,874 patients were identified. CHD, used alone or with WM, had beneficial effect over WM in the improvement of clinical manifestations (RR=1.28; 95% CI 1.22-1.34) and pathological change (RR=1.42; 95% CI 1.30-1.54) for AG patients. However, the H. pylori eradication effect of CHD was not supported by the existing clinical evidence, because of the significant study heterogeneity (I2>50%) and inconsistency between the primary results and sensitivity analysis.Conclusions: CHD, if prescribed as a complementary therapy to WM, may improve the clinical manifestations and pathological change for AG patients.     Void Structures in Regularly Patterned ZnO Nanorods Grown with the Hydrothermal Method

    The void structures and related optical properties after thermal annealing with ambient oxygen in regularly patterned ZnO nanrorod (NR) arrays grown with the hydrothermal method are studied. In increasing the thermal annealing temperature, void distribution starts from the bottom and extends to the top of an NR in the vertical (c-axis) growth region. When the annealing temperature is higher than 400°C, void distribution spreads into the lateral (m-axis) growth region. Photoluminescence measurement shows that the ZnO band-edge emission, in contrast to defect emission in the yellow-red range, is the strongest under the n-ZnO NR process conditions of 0.003 M in Ga-doping concentration and 300°C in thermal annealing temperature with ambient oxygen. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy data indicate that the concentration of hydroxyl groups in the vertical growth region is significantly higher than that in the lateral growth region. During thermal annealing, hydroxyl groups are desorbed from the NR leaving anion vacancies for reacting with cation vacancies to form voids

    Antibody responses to an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in individuals aged from 50 to 102 years

    ObjectivesTo assess antibody responses to an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in individuals aged 50 and older.MethodsWe conducted a post-market cross-sectional seroepidemiology study. We recruited 4,632 vaccinated individuals aged 50 and older, measured their total serum SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody (TA), and collected correlates. The primary outcome was the geometric mean titer (GMT) of TA, and the secondary outcome was the decline of TA with age. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were used to examine the associations of the TA GMT with age, and trend analyses were used to test whether their associations were significant.ResultsAll participants had a detectable TA, which was generally at a low level across all age groups. The TA GMT (95% CI) in AU/mL was 3.05 (2.93, 3.18); the corresponding arithmetic mean (95% CI) was 17.77 (16.13, 19.42) in all participants and 4.33 (3.88, 4.84), 3.86 (3.49, 4.28), 3.24 (2.92, 3.59), 2.77 (2.60, 2.96), and 2.65 (2.48, 2.83) in the age groups of 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-74, and 75 years or older, respectively. The TA GMT decreased with age with a Ptrend < 0.001. The TA GMT was significantly lower in those with hypertension or diabetes compared to those with neither.ConclusionThe inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is effective in individuals aged 50 and older. This is the first study that has found an inverse dose-response relationship between ages and the low-level TAs. Older people, especially those with chronic diseases, should get the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, and their vaccination frequency, dose, and method may need to be different from those of younger people

    HTRA1 variant increases risk to neovascular age-related macular degeneration in Chinese population

    AbstractAge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible visual impairment in the world. Advanced AMD can be divided into wet AMD (choroidal neovascularization) and dry AMD (geographic atrophy, GA). Drusen is characterized by deposits in the macula without visual loss and is an early AMD sign in the Caucasian population. rs11200638 in the promoter of HTRA1 has recently been shown to increases the risk for wet AMD in both Caucasian and Hong Kong Chinese populations. In order to replicate these results in a different cohort, we genotyped rs11200638 for 164 Chinese patients (90 wet AMD and 74 drusen) and 106 normal controls in a Han Mainland Chinese cohort. The genotypes were compared using chi square analysis for an additive allelic model. rs11200638 was significantly associated with wet AMD (p=5.00×10−12). Unlike in the Caucasian population, the risk allele of rs11200638 was not associated with drusen in our Chinese population. These findings confirm the association of HTRA1 with wet AMD
