Determination of Wave Function Functionals: The Constrained-Search--Variational Method
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{93}, 130401 (2004)], we proposed
the idea of expanding the space of variations in variational calculations of
the energy by considering the approximate wave function to be a
functional of functions rather than a function. The
space of variations is expanded because a search over the functions can
in principle lead to the true wave function. As the space of such variations is
large, we proposed the constrained-search-- variational method whereby a
constrained search is first performed over all functions such that the
wave function functional satisfies a physical constraint such as
normalization or the Fermi-Coulomb hole sum rule, or leads to the known value
of an observable such as the diamagnetic susceptibility, nuclear magnetic
constant or Fermi contact term. A rigorous upper bound to the energy is then
obtained by application of the variational principle. A key attribute of the
method is that the wave function functional is accurate throughout space, in
contrast to the standard variational method for which the wave function is
accurate only in those regions of space contributing principally to the energy.
In this paper we generalize the equations of the method to the determination of
arbitrary Hermitian single-particle operators as applied to two-electron atomic
and ionic systems. The description is general and applicable to both ground and
excited states. A discussion on excited states in conjunction with the theorem

Collective excitations in a fermion-fermion mixture with different Fermi surfaces
In this paper, collective excitations in a homogeneous fermion-fermion
mixture with different Fermi surfaces are studied. In the Fermi liquid phase,
the zero-sound velocity is found to be larger than the largest Fermi velocity.
With attractive interactions, the superfluid phase appears below a critical
temperature, and the phase mode is the low-energy collective excitation. The
velocity of the phase mode is proportional to the geometric mean of the two
Fermi velocities. The difference between the two velocities may serve as a tool

Willingness to Pay for Better Air Quality: The case of China
Air pollution is a big threat to human beings and has attract worldwide attention from governments and scholars. Based on the survey of happiness in China, this paper attempts to analyze the impact of local air quality on the happiness of individuals, and to evaluate the monetary value of mitigating air pollution. Through merging individual happiness data in a nationally representative survey with daily air quality index (AQI) according to the date and location of each respondent, it calculates the marginal rate of substitution (MRS) between air quality and income, and then estimates respondents’ willingness to pay (WTP) for better air quality. Moreover, it has further explored the differences of WTPs among groups. This study reaches the conclusion that happiness is positively associated with income but negatively correlated with air pollution. Besides, individual happiness is heavily influenced by income, age, gender, health condition, marital status and other variables. Furthermore, WTPs differ greatly among groups and the estimated average WTP of whole sample is 549.36RMB(or 0.90% of annual household income) per year per family for one unit reduction in AQI
Incentivizing High Quality Crowdwork
We study the causal effects of financial incentives on the quality of
crowdwork. We focus on performance-based payments (PBPs), bonus payments
awarded to workers for producing high quality work. We design and run
randomized behavioral experiments on the popular crowdsourcing platform Amazon
Mechanical Turk with the goal of understanding when, where, and why PBPs help,
identifying properties of the payment, payment structure, and the task itself
that make them most effective. We provide examples of tasks for which PBPs do
improve quality. For such tasks, the effectiveness of PBPs is not too sensitive
to the threshold for quality required to receive the bonus, while the magnitude
of the bonus must be large enough to make the reward salient. We also present
examples of tasks for which PBPs do not improve quality. Our results suggest
that for PBPs to improve quality, the task must be effort-responsive: the task
must allow workers to produce higher quality work by exerting more effort. We
also give a simple method to determine if a task is effort-responsive a priori.
Furthermore, our experiments suggest that all payments on Mechanical Turk are,
to some degree, implicitly performance-based in that workers believe their work
may be rejected if their performance is sufficiently poor. Finally, we propose
a new model of worker behavior that extends the standard principal-agent model
from economics to include a worker's subjective beliefs about his likelihood of
being paid, and show that the predictions of this model are in line with our
experimental findings. This model may be useful as a foundation for theoretical

An analysis of the X-ray emission from the supernova remnant 3C397
The ASCA SIS and the ROSAT PSPC spectral data of the SNR 3C397 are analysed
with a two-component non-equilibrium ionization model. Besides, the ASCA SIS0
and SIS1 spectra are also fitted simultaneously in an equilibrium case. The
resulting values of the hydrogen column density yield a distance of \sim8\kpc
to 3C397. It is found that the hard X-ray emission, containing S and Fe
K lines, arises primarily from the hot component, while most of the
soft emission, composed mainly of Mg, Si, Fe L lines, and continuum, is
produced by the cool component. The emission measures suggest that the remnant
evolves in a cloudy medium and imply that the supernova progenitor might not be
a massive early-type star. The cool component is approaching ionization
equilibrium. The ages estimated from the ionization parameters and dynamics are
all much greater than the previous determination. We restore the X-ray maps
using the ASCA SIS data and compare them with the ROSAT HRI and the NRAO VLA
Sky Survey (NVSS) 20 cm maps. The morphology with two bright concentrations

Thermal and electrical transport in the spin density wave antiferromagnet CaFeAs
We present here measurements of the thermopower, thermal conductivity, and
electrical resistivity of the newly reported compound CaFe4As3. Evidence is
presented from specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements that a
substantial fraction of the Fermi surface survives the onset of spin density
wave (SDW) order at the Neel temperature TN=88 K, and its subsequent
commensurate lockin transition at T2=26.4 K. The specific heat below T2
consists of a normal metallic component from the ungapped parts of the Fermi
surface, and a Bardeen-Cooper- Schrieffer (BCS) component that represents the
SDW gapping of the Fermi surface. A large Kadowaki-Woods ratio is found at low
temperatures, showing that the ground state of CaFe4As3 is a strongly
interacting Fermi liquid. The thermal conductivity of CaFe4As3 is an order of
magnitude smaller than those of conventional metals at all temperatures, due to
a strong phonon scattering. The thermoelectric power displays a sign change
from positive to negative indicating that a partial gap forms at the Fermi
level with the onset of commensurate spin density wave order at T2=26.4 K. The
small value of the thermopower and the enhancements of the resistivity due to
gap formation and strong quasiparticle interactions offset the low value of the
thermal conductivity, yielding only a modest value for the thermoelectric
figure of merit Z < 5x10^-6 1/K in CaFe4As3. The results of ab initio
electronic structure calculations are reported, confirming that the sign change
in the thermopower at T2 is reflected by a sign change in the slope of the
density of states at the Fermi level. Values for the quasiparticle
renormalization are derived from measurements of the specific heat and
thermopower, indicating that as T->0, CaFe4As3 is among the most strongly
correlated of the known Fe-based pnictide and chalcogenide systems.Comment: 8 pages with 5 figure
Development and Evaluation of an Undergraduate Science Communication Module
This paper describes the design and evaluation of an undergraduate final year science communication module for the Science Faculty at the University of East Anglia. The module focuses specifically on science communication and aims to bring an understanding of how science is disseminated to the public. Students on the module are made aware of the models surrounding science communication and investigate how the science culture interfaces with the public. During the module they learn how to adapt science concepts for different audiences and how to talk confidently about science to a lay-audience. Student motivation for module choice centres on the acquisition of transferable skills and students develop these skills through designing, running and evaluating a public outreach event at a school or in a public area. These transferable skills acquired include communication, interaction with different organisations such as museums and science centres, developing understanding of both the needs of different audiences and the importance of time management. They also develop skills relating to self-reflection and how to use this as a tool for future self development. The majority of students completing the module go on to further study, either a PhD, MSc or teacher training. The module can be sustained in its present formed if capped at 40 students, however it is recognised that to increase cohort size, further investment of faculty time and resources would be required
