    Agenda setting and micro-blog use: An analysis of the relationship between Sina Weibo and newspaper agendas in China

    The present study investigates the influence of micro-blogs on the major agenda-setting media in China in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophic railway accident. Study findings are based on a content analysis of micro-blog messages and traditional mainstream media reports that were published in the nine days subsequent to the July 23, 2011 bullet train crash accident. Results suggest that, in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophic train wreck, alternative online media played a decisive role in setting mainstream media agendas and providing a citizen forum on a sensitive issue that their conventional counterparts downplayed, ignored, or missed altogether. In particular, the traditional media’s agenda setting power is no longer universal nor singular within micro-blogging outlets. Instead, traditional media—once a monolithic establishment—are now just one of the role players among many competing influences

    EUCLIA - Exploring the UV/optical continuum lag in active galactic nuclei. I. a model without light echoing

    The tight inter-band correlation and the lag-wavelength relation among UV/optical continua of active galactic nuclei have been firmly established. They are usually understood within the widespread reprocessing scenario, however, the implied inter-band lags are generally too small. Furthermore, it is challenged by new evidences, such as the X-ray reprocessing yields too much high frequency UV/optical variations as well as it fails to reproduce the observed timescale-dependent color variations among {\it Swift} lightcurves of NGC 5548. In a different manner, we demonstrate that an upgraded inhomogeneous accretion disk model, whose local {\it independent} temperature fluctuations are subject to a speculated {\it common} large-scale temperature fluctuation, can intrinsically generate the tight inter-band correlation and lag across UV/optical, and be in nice agreement with several observational properties of NGC 5548, including the timescale-dependent color variation. The emergent lag is a result of the {\it differential regression capability} of local temperature fluctuations when responding to the large-scale fluctuation. An average speed of propagations as large as ≳15%\gtrsim 15\% of the speed of light may be required by this common fluctuation. Several potential physical mechanisms for such propagations are discussed. Our interesting phenomenological scenario may shed new light on comprehending the UV/optical continuum variations of active galactic nuclei.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. ApJ accepted.     Short-term surgical and long-term survival outcomes after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy for gastric cancer

    BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) for gastric cancer has gradually gained popularity. However, the long-term oncological outcomes of LDG have rarely been reported. This study aimed to investigate the survival outcomes of LDG, and evaluate the early surgical outcomes of laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) and totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (TLDG). METHODS: Clinical outcomes of 240 consecutive patients with gastric cancer who underwent LDG at our institution between October 2004 and April 2013 were analyzed. Early surgical outcomes of LADG and TLDG were compared and operative experiences were evaluated. RESULTS: Of the 240 patients, 93 underwent LADG and 147 underwent TLDG. There were 109 T1, 36 T2, 31 T3, and 64 T4a lesions. The median follow-up period was 31.5 months (range: 4–106 months). Tumor recurrence was observed in 40 patients and peritoneal recurrence was observed most commonly. The 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates according to tumor stage were 90.3% and 93.1% in stage I, 72.7% and 67.6% in stage II, and 34.8% and 41.5% in stage III, respectively. No significant differences in early surgical outcomes were noted such as operation time, blood loss and postoperative recovery between LADG and TLDG (P >0.05). CONCLUSIONS: LDG for gastric cancer had acceptable long-term oncologic outcomes. The early surgical outcomes of the two commonly used LDG methods were similar

    Impact of ovarian preservation in women with endometrial cancer

    AbstractBackgroundBilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) is standardly performed in the treatment of endometrial cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of ovarian preservation on the outcome of patients with endometrial cancer.MethodsA retrospective cohort study was performed using the 2000–2010 database of endometrial cancer patients who were treated at Taipei Veterans General Hospital. Information regarding patient age, pathologic reports, and follow-up results was abstracted from medical records.ResultsFive hundred and twenty-nine patients were reviewed in this study. Mean age and follow-up duration were 55.7 ± 11.4 years and 37.5 ± 30.1 months, respectively. The median disease-free survival was 31.2 months (range 0.2–126.9 months). There were no significant differences in disease-free survival between stage I patients with ovarian preservation versus those with oophorectomy (p = 0.473). In a multivariate Cox model, ovarian preservation had no effect on disease-free survival [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.72; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.48–15.59]; however, it was not significantly related to stage and para-aortic lymph node involvement.ConclusionOvarian preservation may be considered in premenopausal women with early-stage low-risk endometrial cancer

    Nonclassical storage and retrieval of a multiphoton pulse in cold Rydberg atoms

    We investigate the storage and retrieval of a multiphoton probe field in cold Rydberg atoms with an effective method based on the superatom model. This probe field is found greatly attenuated in light intensity and two-photon correlation yet suffering little temporal broadening as a result of the partial dipole blockade of Rydberg excitation. In particular, the output field energy exhibits an intriguing saturation effect against the input field energy accompanied by an inhomogeneous nonclassical antibunching feature as a manifestation of the dynamic cooperative optical nonlinearity. Our numerical results are qualitatively consistent with those in a recent experiment and could be extended to pursue quantum information applications of nonclassical light field
