    Cost-Sensitive Decision Tree with Multiple Resource Constraints

    Resource constraints are commonly found in classification tasks. For example, there could be a budget limit on implementation and a deadline for finishing the classification task. Applying the top-down approach for tree induction in this situation may have significant drawbacks. In particular, it is difficult, especially in an early stage of tree induction, to assess an attribute’s contribution to improving the total implementation cost and its impact on attribute selection in later stages because of the deadline constraint. To address this problem, we propose an innovative algorithm, namely, the Cost-Sensitive Associative Tree (CAT) algorithm. Essentially, the algorithm first extracts and retains association classification rules from the training data which satisfy resource constraints, and then uses the rules to construct the final decision tree. The approach has advantages over the traditional top-down approach, first because only feasible classification rules are considered in the tree induction and, second, because their costs and resource use are known. In contrast, in the top-down approach, the information is not available for selecting splitting attributes. The experiment results show that the CAT algorithm significantly outperforms the top-down approach and adapts very well to available resources.Cost-sensitive learning, mining methods and algorithms, decision trees

    Gender Determination using Fingerprint Features

    Several previous studies have investigated the gender difference of the fingerprint features. However, regarding to the statistical significance of such differences, inconsistent results have been obtained. To resolve this problem and to develop a method for gender determination, this work proposes and tests three fingertip features for gender determination. Fingerprints were obtained from 115 normal healthy adults comprised of 57 male and 58 female volunteers. All persons were born in Taiwan and were of Han nationality. The age range was18-35 years. The features of this study are ridge count, ridge density, and finger size, all three of which can easily be determined by counting and calculation. Experimental results show that the tested ridge density features alone are not very effective for gender determination.     A Comparative Study for 2D and 3D Computer-aided Diagnosis Methods for Solitary Pulmonary Nodules

    Many computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) methods, including 2D and 3D approaches, have been proposed for solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs). However, the detection and diagnosis of SPNs remain challenging in many clinical circumstances. One goal of this work is to investigate the relative diagnostic accuracy of 2D and 3D methods. An additional goal is to develop a two-stage approach that combines the simplicity of 2D and the accuracy of 3D methods. The experimental results show statistically significant differences between the diagnostic accuracy of 2D and 3D methods. The results also show that with a very minor drop in diagnostic performance the two-stage approach can significantly reduce the number of nodules needed to be processed by the 3D method, streamlining the computational demand

    Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease, Easily Misdiagnosed as Cerebral Palsy: A Report of a Three-generation Family

    Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder affecting myelination of the central nervous system, and is caused by mutations of the proteolipid protein 1 (PLP1) gene. Clinical manifestations of PMD are variable and major features include progressive nystagmus, spasticity, tremor, ataxia, and psychomotor delay. We describe a classical PMD patient who had been misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy. He had nystagmus and psychomotor delay since infancy and tremor with ataxia developing gradually. Brain MRI revealed demyelination over white matter of the cerebral hemispheres and posterior limbs of the internal capsules. Positive family history led to subsequent mutation analysis, which identified a novel mutation (c.88G>C) in PLP1 in the proband, as well as his affected brother and maternal uncle, and asymptomatic maternal grandmother, mother and two sisters. Therefore, PMD should be considered in a cerebral palsy-like patient with or without positive family history. Mutation analysis is crucial for early diagnosis and further genetic counseling

Therefore, human-centered measures have been proposed, e.g. the depth. This paper discusses the depth of various games, extends it to a continuous measure. We provide new depth results and present tool (given-first-move, pie rule, size extension) for increasing it. We also use these measures for analyzing games and opening moves in Y, NoGo, Killall Go, and the effect of pie rules

    In Vitro Activities of Antibiotic Combinations Against Clinical Isolates of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

    Combination therapy has been recommended to treat Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections worldwide. The purpose of the present study was to determine the in vitro activities of piperacillin, cefepime, aztreonam, amikacin, and ciprofloxacin alone and in combination against 100 clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa from one medical center in southern Taiwan. The combination susceptibility assay was performed using the checkerboard technique. The percentage of resistance of P. aeruginosa to single agents in our study was relatively high for the Asia-Pacific area, except to aztreonam. Piperacillin plus amikacin exhibited the highest potential for synergy (59/100) in this study. Moreover, a high percentage of synergism was also noted with amikacin combined with cefepime (7/100) or aztreonam (16/100). The combination of two beta-lactams, such as cefepime with piperacillin, and aztreonam with cefepime or piperacillin, showed synergistic effects against some P. aeruginosa isolates. Although ciprofloxacin is a good anti-pseudomonal agent, a very low potential for synergy with other antibiotics was demonstrated in this study. No antagonism was exhibited by any combination in our study. Among piperacillin-resistant strains, there was synergy with a beta-lactam plus amikacin, including the combination of piperacillin and amikacin. However, the combination of two beta-lactams, such as piperacillin and cefepime or aztreonam, did not have any synergistic activity against these strains. In summary, the combinations of amikacin with the tested beta-lactams (piperacillin, aztreonam, cefepime) had a greater synergistic effect against P. aeruginosa, even piperacillin-resistant strains, than other combinations. Understanding the synergistic effect on clinical strains may help clinicians choose better empirical therapy in an area with high prevalence of multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa
