    Dielectron Cross Section Measurements in Nucleus-Nucleus Reactions at 1.0 A GeV

    We present measured dielectron production cross sections for Ca+Ca, C+C, He+Ca, and d+Ca reactions at 1.0 A GeV. Statistical uncertainties and systematic effects are smaller than in previous DLS nucleus-nucleus data. For pair mass < 0.35 GeV/c2 : 1) the Ca+Ca cross section is larger than the previous DLS measurement and current model results, 2) the mass spectra suggest large contributions from pi0 and eta Dalitz decays, and 3) dsigma/dM is proportional to ApAt. For M > 0.5 GeV/c2 the Ca+Ca to C+C cross section ratio is significantly larger than the ratio of ApAt values.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters.     Inclusive Dielectron Cross Sections in p+p and p+d Interactions at Beam Energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV

    Measurements of dielectron production in p+p and p+d collisions with beam kinetic energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV are presented. The differential cross section is presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the mass spectra and their evolution with beam energy provide information about the relative importance of the various dielectron production mechanisms in this energy regime. The p+d to p+p ratio of the dielectron yield is also presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the transverse momentum and rapidity spectra from the p+d and p+p systems are found to be similar to one another for each of the beam energies studied. The beam energy dependence of the integrated cross sections is also presented.Comment: 15 pages and 16 figure

    Differential cross sections and recoil polarizations for the reaction gamma p -> K+ Sigma0

    High-statistics measurements of differential cross sections and recoil polarizations for the reaction Îłp→K+ÎŁ0\gamma p \rightarrow K^+ \Sigma^0 have been obtained using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. We cover center-of-mass energies (s\sqrt{s}) from 1.69 to 2.84 GeV, with an extensive coverage in the K+K^+ production angle. Independent measurements were made using the K+pπ−K^{+}p\pi^{-}(Îł\gamma) and K+pK^{+}p(π−,Îł\pi^-, \gamma) final-state topologies, and were found to exhibit good agreement. Our differential cross sections show good agreement with earlier CLAS, SAPHIR and LEPS results, while offering better statistical precision and a 300-MeV increase in s\sqrt{s} coverage. Above s≈2.5\sqrt{s} \approx 2.5 GeV, tt- and uu-channel Regge scaling behavior can be seen at forward- and backward-angles, respectively. Our recoil polarization (PÎŁP_\Sigma) measurements represent a substantial increase in kinematic coverage and enhanced precision over previous world data. At forward angles we find that PÎŁP_\Sigma is of the same magnitude but opposite sign as PΛP_\Lambda, in agreement with the static SU(6) quark model prediction of PΣ≈−PΛP_\Sigma \approx -P_\Lambda. This expectation is violated in some mid- and backward-angle kinematic regimes, where PÎŁP_\Sigma and PΛP_\Lambda are of similar magnitudes but also have the same signs. In conjunction with several other meson photoproduction results recently published by CLAS, the present data will help constrain the partial wave analyses being performed to search for missing baryon resonances.Comment: 23 pages, 17 figure

    Deeply virtual and exclusive electroproduction of omega mesons

    The exclusive omega electroproduction off the proton was studied in a large kinematical domain above the nucleon resonance region and for the highest possible photon virtuality (Q2) with the 5.75 GeV beam at CEBAF and the CLAS spectrometer. Cross sections were measured up to large values of the four-momentum transfer (-t < 2.7 GeV2) to the proton. The contributions of the interference terms sigma_TT and sigma_TL to the cross sections, as well as an analysis of the omega spin density matrix, indicate that helicity is not conserved in this process. The t-channel pi0 exchange, or more generally the exchange of the associated Regge trajectory, seems to dominate the reaction gamma* p -> omega p, even for Q2 as large as 5 GeV2. Contributions of handbag diagrams, related to Generalized Parton Distributions in the nucleon, are therefore difficult to extract for this process. Remarkably, the high-t behaviour of the cross sections is nearly Q2-independent, which may be interpreted as a coupling of the photon to a point-like object in this kinematical limit.Comment: 15 pages,19 figure

    Search for Θ+(1540)\Theta^+(1540) pentaquark in high statistics measurement of γp→Kˉ0K+n\gamma p \to \bar K^0 K^+ n at CLAS

    The exclusive reaction γp→Kˉ0K+n\gamma p \to \bar K^0 K^+ n was studied in the photon energy range between 1.6-3.8 GeV searching for evidence of the exotic baryon Θ+(1540)→nK+\Theta^+(1540)\to nK^+. The decay to nK+nK^+ requires the assignment of strangeness S=+1S=+1 to any observed resonance. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 70 pb−1pb^{-1}. No evidence for the Θ+\Theta^+ pentaquark was found. Upper limits were set on the production cross section as function of center-of-mass angle and nK+nK^+ mass. The 95% CL upper limit on the total cross section for a narrow resonance at 1540 MeV was found to be 0.8 nb.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Q^2 Dependence of the S_{11}(1535) Photocoupling and Evidence for a P-wave resonance in eta electroproduction

    New cross sections for the reaction ep→eâ€Čηpep \to e'\eta p are reported for total center of mass energy WW=1.5--2.3 GeV and invariant squared momentum transfer Q2Q^2=0.13--3.3 GeV2^2. This large kinematic range allows extraction of new information about response functions, photocouplings, and ηN\eta N coupling strengths of baryon resonances. A sharp structure is seen at W∌W\sim 1.7 GeV. The shape of the differential cross section is indicative of the presence of a PP-wave resonance that persists to high Q2Q^2. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S11S_{11}(1535) resonance. The new data greatly expands the Q2Q^2 range covered and an interpretation of all data with a consistent parameterization is provided.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figure

    Q2Q^2 Dependence of Quadrupole Strength in the γ∗p→Δ+(1232)→pπ0\gamma^*p\to\Delta^+(1232)\to p \pi^0 Transition

    Models of baryon structure predict a small quadrupole deformation of the nucleon due to residual tensor forces between quarks or distortions from the pion cloud. Sensitivity to quark versus pion degrees of freedom occurs through the Q2Q^2 dependence of the magnetic (M1+M_{1+}), electric (E1+E_{1+}), and scalar (S1+S_{1+}) multipoles in the γ∗p→Δ+→pπ0\gamma^* p \to \Delta^+ \to p \pi^0 transition. We report new experimental values for the ratios E1+/M1+E_{1+}/M_{1+} and S1+/M1+S_{1+}/M_{1+} over the range Q2Q^2= 0.4-1.8 GeV2^2, extracted from precision p(e,eâ€Čp)π∘p(e,e 'p)\pi^{\circ} data using a truncated multipole expansion. Results are best described by recent unitary models in which the pion cloud plays a dominant role.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. To be published in Phys. Rev. Lett.     Photoproduction of phi(1020) mesons on the proton at large momentum transfer

    The cross section for ϕ\phi meson photoproduction on the proton has been measured for the first time up to a four-momentum transfer -t = 4 GeV^2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. At low four-momentum transfer, the differential cross section is well described by Pomeron exchange. At large four-momentum transfer, above -t = 1.8 GeV^2, the data support a model where the Pomeron is resolved into its simplest component, two gluons, which may couple to any quark in the proton and in the ϕ\phi.Comment: 5 pages; 7 figure

    Light Vector Mesons in the Nuclear Medium

    The light vector mesons (ρ\rho, ω\omega, and ϕ\phi) were produced in deuterium, carbon, titanium, and iron targets in a search for possible in-medium modifications to the properties of the ρ\rho meson at normal nuclear densities and zero temperature. The vector mesons were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) via their decays to e+e−e^{+}e^{-}. The rare leptonic decay was chosen to reduce final-state interactions. A combinatorial background was subtracted from the invariant mass spectra using a well-established event-mixing technique. The ρ\rho meson mass spectrum was extracted after the ω\omega and ϕ\phi signals were removed in a nearly model-independent way. Comparisons were made between the ρ\rho mass spectra from the heavy targets (A>2A > 2) with the mass spectrum extracted from the deuterium target. With respect to the ρ\rho-meson mass, we obtain a small shift compatible with zero. Also, we measure widths consistent with standard nuclear many-body effects such as collisional broadening and Fermi motion.Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, 3 table

    π+\pi^+ photoproduction on the proton for photon energies from 0.725 to 2.875 GeV

    Differential cross sections for the reaction Îłp→nπ+\gamma p \to n \pi^+ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.725 to 2.875 GeV. Where available, the results obtained here compare well with previously published results for the reaction. Agreement with the SAID and MAID analyses is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been made up to 2.7 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations. With the addition of these cross sections to the world data set, significant changes have occurred in the high-energy behavior of the SAID cross-section predictions and amplitudes.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
