    Life cycle environmental and economic assessment of alumina recovery from secondary aluminum dross in China

    Secondary aluminum dross is regarded as a hazardous solid waste in many countries. A coupled life cycle assessment and life cycle costing method was used to evaluate the environmental impact and economic cost of two processes for producing alumina from bauxite and secondary aluminum dross. The results showed that the total normalized midpoint value of the dross process is 32.16% lower than that of the bauxite process. The cost of producing 1 t alumina by dross process is 130.01 ,accountingforonly49.54, accounting for only 49.54% of that of bauxite process. Ammonium sulfate as a by-product also brought in a profit of 22.18 . These findings could be attributed to the decrease in energy and raw material consumption (i.e., steam, sodium hydroxide, electricity) and the relatively low cost of secondary aluminum dross. Adjusting raw materials for steam production and optimizing electricity structure could reduce the overall environmental impact of secondary aluminum dross recovery. Based on the forecast of environmental impact and policy adjustment in the future, inter-provincial dross transportation and southwest aluminum industry migration in China could be feasible solutions

    A model of rotating hotspots for 3:2 frequency ratio of HFQPOs in black hole X-ray binaries

    We propose a model to explain a puzzling 3:2 frequency ratio of high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) in black hole (BH) X-ray binaries, GRO J1655-40, GRS 1915+105 and XTE J1550-564. In our model a non-axisymmetric magnetic coupling (MC) of a rotating black hole (BH) with its surrounding accretion disc coexists with the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) process. The upper frequency is fitted by a rotating hotspot near the inner edge of the disc, which is produced by the energy transferred from the BH to the disc, and the lower frequency is fitted by another rotating hotspot somewhere away from the inner edge of the disc, which arises from the screw instability of the magnetic field on the disc. It turns out that the 3:2 frequency ratio of HFQPOs in these X-ray binaries could be well fitted to the observational data with a much narrower range of the BH spin. In addition, the spectral properties of HFQPOs are discussed. The correlation of HFQPOs with jets from microquasars is contained naturally in our model.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. accepted by MNRA

    Momentum Distribution of Near-Zero-Energy Photoelectrons in the Strong-Field Tunneling Ionization in the Long Wavelength Limit

    We investigate the ionization dynamics of Argon atoms irradiated by an ultrashort intense laser of a wavelength up to 3100 nm, addressing the momentum distribution of the photoelectrons with near-zero-energy. We find a surprising accumulation in the momentum distribution corresponding to meV energy and a \textquotedblleft V"-like structure at the slightly larger transverse momenta. Semiclassical simulations indicate the crucial role of the Coulomb attraction between the escaping electron and the remaining ion at extremely large distance. Tracing back classical trajectories, we find the tunneling electrons born in a certain window of the field phase and transverse velocity are responsible for the striking accumulation. Our theoretical results are consistent with recent meV-resolved high-precision measurements.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Transgenic Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum ) plants from microprojectile bombardment of embryogenic suspension cells

    Transgenic forage-type Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) plants have been obtained by microprojectile bombardment of embryogenic suspension cells using a chimeric hygromycin phosphotransferase (hph) gene construct driven by riceActl 5′ regulatory sequences. Parameters for the bombardment of embryogenic suspension cultures with the particle inflow gun were partially optimized using transient expression assays of a chimericβ-glucuronidase (gusA) gene driven by the maizeUbi1 promoter. Stably transformed clones were recovered with a selection scheme using hygromycin in liquid medium followed by a plate selection. Plants were regenerated from 33% of the hygromycin-resistant calli. The transgenic nature of the regenerated plants was demonstrated by Southern hybridization analysis.     Effect of visual landscape factors on soundscape evaluation in old residential areas

    The visual landscape influences the soundscape experience of urban public spaces. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationships among visual landscape factors and soundscape evaluation of old residential areas and determine their main influencing factors. In Tianjin, China, six typical old residential areas were selected to collect sound and video information. Virtual reality (VR) was used to create an evaluation environment, and subjective evaluations of the visual landscape and soundscape were accessed through questionnaire (N = 256). The results show that the evaluation of soundscape and visual landscape satisfaction of the central square in the old residential area is superior to that of the public space along the street, as affected by spatial location, sound characteristics and other factors. Greenery satisfaction, environmental cleanliness, and architectural aesthetics were significantly positively correlated with soundscape evaluation. Additionally, three latent variables, namely, visual landscape factors, spatial factors and soundscape evaluation factors, were identified through factor analysis, and a structural equation model (SEM) of “visual landscape factors–soundscape evaluation” was built. The visual landscape factors in old residential areas were found to be important factors affecting soundscape evaluation. The standardization coefficient was 0.46 (P ≤ 0.01). Although the spatial factors have no direct contribution to the soundscape evaluation of the old residential areas, its observation variable, environmental cleanliness, is significantly positively correlated with all the observed variables of the soundscape evaluation factors

    Environmental effect on vision-based structural dynamic displacement monitoring

    Structural dynamic displacement is an important indicator of the health condition of long-span bridges. Monitoring of bridge dynamic displacement has been a critical task within the context of structural health monitoring (SHM). Traditionally, the structural displacement measurement methods are contact, wired and time-consuming. With the great progress of image processing technique and vision robot science, the visionbased monitoring systems have been developed rapidly and received a huge amount of attentions in the field of SHM. However, in the practical applications, the environmental factors will affect the operational performance of the vision-based system. In this study, a series of comparative experiments are conducted to explore the robustness of vision-based structural dynamic displacement monitoring under varying illumination conditions by use of various types of vision targets (quick response (QR) code and LED lamp). The experimental results indicate that the robustness of the vision-based system is weakened under poor illumination conditions when the QR code is used to be the vision target in comparison with the vision target of LED lamp
