Dynamics of FitzHugh-Nagumo excitable systems with delayed coupling
Small lattices of nearest neighbor coupled excitable FitzHugh-Nagumo
systems, with time-delayed coupling are studied, and compared with systems of
FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators with the same delayed coupling. Bifurcations of
equilibria in N=2 case are studied analytically, and it is then numerically
confirmed that the same bifurcations are relevant for the dynamics in the case
. Bifurcations found include inverse and direct Hopf and fold limit cycle
bifurcations. Typical dynamics for different small time-lags and coupling
intensities could be excitable with a single globally stable equilibrium,
asymptotic oscillatory with symmetric limit cycle, bi-stable with stable
equilibrium and a symmetric limit cycle, and again coherent oscillatory but
non-symmetric and phase-shifted. For an intermediate range of time-lags inverse
sub-critical Hopf and fold limit cycle bifurcations lead to the phenomenon of
oscillator death. The phenomenon does not occur in the case of FitzHugh-Nagumo
oscillators with the same type of coupling.Comment: accepted by Phys.Rev.
Interplay of disorder and magnetic field in the superconducting vortex state
We calculate the density of states of an inhomogeneous superconductor in a
magnetic field where the positions of vortices are distributed completely at
random. We consider both the cases of s-wave and d-wave pairing. For both
pairing symmetries either the presence of disorder or increasing the density of
vortices enhances the low energy density of states. In the s-wave case the gap
is filled and the density of states is a power law at low energies. In the
d-wave case the density of states is finite at zero energy and it rises
linearly at very low energies in the Dirac isotropic case
(\alpha_D=t/\Delta_0=1, where t is the hopping integral and \Delta_0 is the
amplitude of the order parameter). For slightly higher energies the density of
states crosses over to a quadratic behavior. As the Dirac anisotropy increases
(as \Delta_0 decreases with respect to the hopping term) the linear region
decreases in width. Neglecting this small region the density of states
interpolates between quadratic and back to linear as \alpha_D increases. The
low energy states are strongly peaked near the vortex cores.Comment: 12 REVTeX pages, 15 figure
Slater-Pauling Behavior of the Half-Ferromagnetic Full-Heusler Alloys
Using the full-potential screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method we study the
full-Heusler alloys based on Co, Fe, Rh and Ru. We show that many of these
compounds show a half-metallic behavior, however in contrast to the
half-Heusler alloys the energy gap in the minority band is extremely small.
These full-Heusler compounds show a Slater-Pauling behavior and the total
spin-magnetic moment per unit cell (M_t) scales with the total number of
valence electrons (Z_t) following the rule: M_t=Z_t-24. We explain why the
spin-down band contains exactly 12 electrons using arguments based on the group
theory and show that this rule holds also for compounds with less than 24
valence electrons. Finally we discuss the deviations from this rule and the

A Measurement of Psi(2S) Resonance Parameters
Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been
measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector
operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons,
pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined
to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)=
(2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)=
(97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%,

Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution/Fragmentation Functions at an Electron-Ion Collider
We present a summary of a recent workshop held at Duke University on Partonic
Transverse Momentum in Hadrons: Quark Spin-Orbit Correlations and Quark-Gluon
Interactions. The transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions
(TMDs), parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, and multi-parton correlation
functions, were discussed extensively at the Duke workshop. In this paper, we
summarize first the theoretical issues concerning the study of partonic
structure of hadrons at a future electron-ion collider (EIC) with emphasis on
the TMDs. We then present simulation results on experimental studies of TMDs
through measurements of single spin asymmetries (SSA) from semi-inclusive
deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes with an EIC, and discuss the
requirement of the detector for SIDIS measurements. The dynamics of parton
correlations in the nucleon is further explored via a study of SSA in D (`D)
production at large transverse momenta with the aim of accessing the unexplored
tri-gluon correlation functions. The workshop participants identified the SSA
measurements in SIDIS as a golden program to study TMDs in both the sea and
valence quark regions and to study the role of gluons, with the Sivers
asymmetry measurements as examples. Such measurements will lead to major
advancement in our understanding of TMDs in the valence quark region, and more
importantly also allow for the investigation of TMDs in the sea quark region

Measurements of the Mass and Full-Width of the Meson
In a sample of 58 million events collected with the BES II detector,
the process J/ is observed in five different decay
channels: , , (with ), (with
) and . From a combined fit of all five
channels, we determine the mass and full-width of to be
MeV/ and

Study of the B^0 Semileptonic Decay Spectrum at the Upsilon(4S) Resonance
We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample
of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B0 -->
D*- l+ nu. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb**-1 of data collected at the
Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the
inclusive lepton spectrum from all Upsilon(4S) events in the same data set.
These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c.
From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B0 and B+
semileptonic branching fractions, b0 and b+, their ratio, and the production
ratio f+-/f00 of B+ and B0 pairs at the Upsilon(4S). We report b+/b0=0.950
(+0.117-0.080) +- 0.091, b0 = (10.78 +- 0.60 +- 0.69)%, and b+ = (10.25 +- 0.57
+- 0.65)%. b+/b0 is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes,

Measurement of the Mass Splittings between the States
We present new measurements of photon energies and branching fractions for
the radiative transitions: Upsilon(2S)->gamma+chi_b(J=0,1,2). The masses of the
chi_b states are determined from the measured radiative photon energies. The
ratio of mass splittings between the chi_b substates,
r==(M[J=2]-M[J=1])/(M[J=1]-M[J=0]) with M the chi_b mass, provides information
on the nature of the bbbar confining potential. We find
r(1P)=0.54+/-0.02+/-0.02. This value is in conflict with the previous world
average, but more consistent with the theoretical expectation that r(1P)<r(2P);
i.e., that this mass splittings ratio is smaller for the chi_b(1P) triplet than

Radiative Decay Modes of the Meson
Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR we have searched for four
radiative decay modes of the meson: ,
, , and . We
obtain 90% CL upper limits on the branching ratios of these modes of , , and
