    Influence of long-range cation order on relaxor properties of doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramics

    The 1:1 B-site cation order in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 relaxor ferroelectric ceramics was significantly enhanced by doping of minor amounts of La3+, Sc3+, or W6+ (less than 3 at. %) combined with a slow cooling procedure. Transmission electron microscopy examination confirmed the size increase of the cation-ordered regions embedded in a disordered matrix in the samples that were slowly cooled after sintering. The average cation ordering parameter (S) determined from x-ray diffraction data in these partially ordered samples was about 0.3–0.4. The ferroelectric properties and dielectric relaxation were compared in partially ordered and disordered (S=0) samples with the same composition. It was found that typical relaxor behavior was preserved in partially ordered ceramics. Furthermore, the temperature and diffuseness of the characteristic relaxor permittivity peak and the parameters of dielectric relaxation (in particular, the distribution of relaxation times and the Vogel-Fulcher freezing temperature) were practically independent of S. In contrast, the diffuseness of the phase transition from the ferroelectric phase (induced by external electric field) to the ergodic relaxor phase appeared to be much larger in the disordered samples than in the partially ordered ones (this diffuseness was assessed using pyroelectric current and ferroelectric hysteresis loops). These results suggest that cation ordering did not influence the behavior of polar nanoregions which are responsible for the dielectric response in the ergodic relaxor phase but significantly influenced the ferroelectric phase transition. The results are interpreted in terms of different types of polar regions in the disordered matrix and cation-ordered domains

    The effect of oxygen stoichiometry on electrical transport and magnetic properties of La0.9Te0.1MnOy

    The effect of the variation of oxygen content on structural, magnetic and transport properties in the electron-doped manganites La0.9Te0.1MnOy has been investigated. All samples show a rhombohedral structure with the space group . The Curie temperature decreases and the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition becomes broader with the reduction of oxygen content. The resistivity of the annealed samples increases slightly with a small reduction of oxygen content. Further reduction in the oxygen content, the resistivity maximum increases by six orders of magnitude compared with that of the as-prepared sample, and the r(T) curves of samples with y = 2.86 and y = 2.83 display the semiconducting behavior () in both high-temperature PM phase and low-temperature FM phase, which is considered to be related to the appearance of superexchange ferromagnetism (SFM) and the localization of carriers. The results are discussed in terms of the combined effects of the increase in the Mn2+/(Mn2++Mn3+) ratio, the partial destruction of double exchange (DE) interaction, and the localization of carriers due to the introduction of oxygen vacancies in the Mn-O-Mn network.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure

    Partial Wave Analysis of J/ψγ(K+Kπ+π)J/\psi \to \gamma (K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-)

    BES data on J/ψγ(K+Kπ+π)J/\psi \to \gamma (K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-) are presented. The KKˉK^*\bar K^* contribution peaks strongly near threshold. It is fitted with a broad 0+0^{-+} resonance with mass M=1800±100M = 1800 \pm 100 MeV, width Γ=500±200\Gamma = 500 \pm 200 MeV. A broad 2++2^{++} resonance peaking at 2020 MeV is also required with width 500\sim 500 MeV. There is further evidence for a 2+2^{-+} component peaking at 2.55 GeV. The non-KKˉK^*\bar K^* contribution is close to phase space; it peaks at 2.6 GeV and is very different from KKˉK^{*}\bar{K^{*}}.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, Submitted to PL

    Partial wave analysis of J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi

    Using 5.8×107J/ψ5.8 \times 10^7 J/\psi events collected in the BESII detector, the radiative decay J/ψγϕϕγK+KKS0KL0J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi \to \gamma K^+ K^- K^0_S K^0_L is studied. The ϕϕ\phi\phi invariant mass distribution exhibits a near-threshold enhancement that peaks around 2.24 GeV/c2c^{2}. A partial wave analysis shows that the structure is dominated by a 0+0^{-+} state (η(2225)\eta(2225)) with a mass of 2.240.02+0.030.02+0.032.24^{+0.03}_{-0.02}{}^{+0.03}_{-0.02} GeV/c2c^{2} and a width of 0.19±0.030.04+0.060.19 \pm 0.03^{+0.06}_{-0.04} GeV/c2c^{2}. The product branching fraction is: Br(J/ψγη(2225))Br(η(2225)ϕϕ)=(4.4±0.4±0.8)×104Br(J/\psi \to \gamma \eta(2225))\cdot Br(\eta(2225)\to \phi\phi) = (4.4 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. corrected proof for journa

    Based on a sample of 5.8X 10^7 J/psi events taken with the BESII detector, the branching fractions of J/psi--> 2(pi+pi-)eta and J/psi-->3(pi+pi-)eta are measured for the first time to be (2.26+-0.08+-0.27)X10^{-3} and (7.24+-0.96+-1.11)X10^{-4}, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadron production in e^+e^- annihilation at \sqrt{s}= 3.773 and 3.650 GeV

    By analyzing the data sets of 17.3 pb1^{-1} taken at s=3.773\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV and 6.5 pb1^{-1} taken at s=3.650\sqrt{s}=3.650 GeV with the BESII detector at the BEPC collider, we have measured the observed cross sections for 12 exclusive light hadron final states produced in e+ee^+e^- annihilation at the two energy points. We have also set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and the branching fractions for ψ(3770)\psi(3770) decay to these final states at 90% C.L.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figur

    Tight-binding parameters for charge transfer along DNA

    We systematically examine all the tight-binding parameters pertinent to charge transfer along DNA. The π\pi molecular structure of the four DNA bases (adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine) is investigated by using the linear combination of atomic orbitals method with a recently introduced parametrization. The HOMO and LUMO wavefunctions and energies of DNA bases are discussed and then used for calculating the corresponding wavefunctions of the two B-DNA base-pairs (adenine-thymine and guanine-cytosine). The obtained HOMO and LUMO energies of the bases are in good agreement with available experimental values. Our results are then used for estimating the complete set of charge transfer parameters between neighboring bases and also between successive base-pairs, considering all possible combinations between them, for both electrons and holes. The calculated microscopic quantities can be used in mesoscopic theoretical models of electron or hole transfer along the DNA double helix, as they provide the necessary parameters for a tight-binding phenomenological description based on the π\pi molecular overlap. We find that usually the hopping parameters for holes are higher in magnitude compared to the ones for electrons, which probably indicates that hole transport along DNA is more favorable than electron transport.     A Measurement of Psi(2S) Resonance Parameters

    Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons, pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)= (2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)= (97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    BESII Detector Simulation

    A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.     Study of J/ψωK+KJ/\psi \to \omega K^+K^-

    New data are presented on J/ψωK+KJ/\psi \to \omega K^+K^- from a sample of 58M J/ψJ/\psi events in the upgraded BES II detector at the BEPC. There is a conspicuous signal for f0(1710)K+Kf_0(1710) \to K^+K^- and a peak at higher mass which may be fitted with f2(2150)KKˉf_2(2150) \to K\bar K. From a combined analysis with ωπ+π\omega \pi ^+ \pi ^- data, the branching ratio BR(f0(1710)ππ)/BR(f0(1710)KKˉ)BR(f_0(1710)\to\pi\pi)/BR(f_0(1710) \to K\bar K) is <0.11< 0.11 at the 95% confidence level.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures.
