    A Critical Review of Research on Reuse of Mechanically Recycled FRP Production and End-of-Life Waste for Construction

    For the last three decades, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials have been widely used in major engineering industries. Managing FRP waste is becoming an important issue due to the growth in the production of FRP composite materials. In this article, the issue of FRP waste management is discussed and the commonly used methods for the handling of FRP waste are reviewed. One potentially viable use of FRP waste is in the partial replacement of fillers or aggregates in cementitious materials (particularly portland cement mortar and concrete). A number of important prior investigations performed on the use of FRP waste in concrete and mortar are reviewed. The results from most of those investigations suggest that FRP aggregates significantly reduce the strength of cementitious materials with little significant effect on durability. Recommendations for future research in this area are provided for producing stronger mortars and concretes incorporating FRP production and end-of-life waste

    Production, Characterization, and Mechanical Behavior of Cementitious Materials Incorporating Carbon Nanofibers

    Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofirbers (CNFs) have excellent properties (mechanical, electrical, magnetic, etc.), which can make them effective nanoreinforcements for improving the properties of materials. The incorporation of CNT/Fs in a wide variety of materials has been researched extensively in the past decade. However, the past study on the reinforcement of cementitious materials with these nanofilaments has been limited. The findings from those studies indicate that CNT/Fs did not significantly improve the mechanical properties of cementitious materials. Two major parameters influence the effectiveness of any discrete inclusion in composite material: The dispersion quality of the inclusions and the interfacial bond between the inclusions and matrix. The main focus of this dissertation is on the dispersion factor, and consists of three main tasks: First a novel thermodynamic-based method for dispersion quantification was developed. Second, a new method, incorporating the utilization of silica fume, was devised to improve and stabilize the dispersion of CNFs in cement paste. And third, the dispersion quantification method and mechanical testing were employed to measure, compare, and correlate the dispersion and mechanical properties of CNF-incorporated cement paste produced with the conventional and new methods. Finally, the main benefits, including the increase in strength and resistance to shrinkage cracking, obtained from the utilization of CNFs in cement paste will be presented. The investigations and the corresponding results show that the novel dispersion quantification method can be implemented easily to perform a wide variety of tasks ranging from measuring dispersion of nanofilaments in composites using their optical/SEM micrographs as input, to measuring the effect of cement particle/clump size on the dispersion of nano inclusions in cement paste. It was found that cement particles do not affect the dispersion of nano inclusions in cement paste significantly while the dispersion of nano inclusions can notably degenerates if the cement particles are agglomerated. The novel dispersion quantification method shows that, the dispersion of CNFs in cement paste significantly improves by utilizing silica fume. However, it was found that the dispersion of silica fume particles is an important parameter and poorly dispersed silica fume cannot enhance the overall dispersion of nano inclusions in cementitious materials. Finally, the mechanical testing and experimentations showed that CNFs, in absence of moist curing, even if poorly dispersed, can provide important benefits in terms of strength and crack resistance

    Concepts for Reusing Composite Materials from Decommissioned Wind Turbine Blades in Affordable Housing

    The very rapid growth in wind energy technology in the last 15 years has led to a rapid growth in the amount of non-biodegradable, thermosetting fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials used in wind turbine blades. This paper discusses conceptual architectural and structural options for recycling these blades by reusing parts of wind turbine blades in new or retrofitted housing projects. It focuses on large-sized FRP pieces that can be salvaged from the turbine blades and can potentially be useful in infrastructure projects where harsh environmental conditions (water and high humidity) exist. Since reuse design should be for specific regional locations and architectural characteristics the designs presented in this paper are for the coastal regions of the Yucatan province in Mexico on the Gulf of Mexico where low-quality masonry block informal housing is vulnerable to severe hurricanes and flooding. To demonstrate the concept a prototype 100 m long wind blade model developed by Sandia National Laboratories is used to show how a wind blade can be broken down into parts, thus making it possible to envision architectural applications for the different wind blade segments for housing applications

    Mechanical Processing of GFRP Waste into Large-Sized Pieces for Use in Concrete

    Recycling glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite materials has been proven to be challenging due to their high mechanical performance and high resistance to harsh chemical and thermal conditions. This work discusses the efforts made in the past to mechanically process GFRP waste materials by cutting them into large-sized (cm scale) pieces, as opposed to pulverization, for use in concrete mixtures. These pieces can be classified into two main categories—coarse aggregate and discrete reinforcement, here referred to as “needles.” The results from all the studies show that using GFRP coarse aggregate leads to significant reductions in the compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete. However, GFRP needles lead to sizable increases in the energy absorption capacity of concrete. In addition, if the glass fibers are longitudinally aligned within the needles, these elements can substantially increase the tensile strength of concrete. Processing GFRP waste into needles requires less energy and time than that for producing GFRP coarse aggregate. Also, compared to pulverized GFRP waste, which consists of broken and separate particles of glass and resin that at best can be used as low-quality fillers, GFRP needles are high strength composite elements

    Challenges and Benefits of Utilizing Carbon Nanofilaments in Cementitious Materials

    Carbon nanofibers/tubes (CNF/Ts) are very strong and stiff and as a result, are expected to be capable of enhancing the mechanical properties of cementitious materials significantly. Yet there are practical issues concerning the utilization of CNF/Ts in cementitious materials. This study summarizes some of the past efforts made by different investigators for utilizing carbon nanofilaments in cementitious materials and also reports recent experimental research performed by the authors on the mechanical properties of CNF-reinforced hardened cement paste. The major difficulties concerning the utilization of CNF/Ts in cementitious materials are introduced and discussed. Most of these difficulties are related to the poor dispersibility of CNF/Ts. However, the findings from the research presented in this work indicate that, despite these difficulties, carbon nanofilaments can significantly improve the mechanical properties of cementitious materials. The results show that CNFs, even when poorly dispersed within the cementitious matrix, can remarkably increase the flexural strength and cracking resistance of concrete subjected to drying conditions
