    Drop mobility on superhydrophobic microstructured surfaces with wettability contrasts

    Manipulation of drop motion has attracted considerable attention recently as it is pertinent to industrial/biological applications such as microfluidics. Wettability gradients/contrasts applied to microtextured, superhydrophobic surfaces are probable candidates for engineering drop motion by virtue of their wettability controllability and low contact angle hysteresis. In the present work, we present a systematic study of drop mobility induced via wettability contrasts. A millimetre-sized water drop, placed on the boundary between two surfaces with distinct, uniform arrays of pillars, immediately moved toward the surface more densely populated with asperities, which was relatively more hydrophilic. The velocity of the motion was found to increase proportionally with the difference in pillar densities on each surface, in circumstances where the rear side surface had sufficiently small contact angle hysteresis. To elucidate the underlying mechanism of drop motion, we implemented a surface energy analysis for each motion event. Motion was initiated by the excess surface free energy due to drop deformation and directed in favour of energy minimisation. Lastly, we propose a theory to predict the direction of the drop which at the same time acts as the criterion for the motion to ensue

    Influence of Local Heating on Marangoni Flows and Evaporation Kinetics of Pure Water Drops

    The effect of localized heating on the evaporation of pure sessile water drops was probed experimentally by a combination of infrared thermography and optical imaging. In particular, we studied the effect of three different heating powers and two different locations, directly below the center and edge of the drop. In all cases, four distinct stages were identified according to the emerging thermal patterns. In particular, depending on heating location, recirculating vortices emerge that either remain pinned or move azimuthally within the drop. Eventually, these vortices oscillate in different modes depending on heating location. Infrared data allowed extraction of temperature distribution on each drop surface. In turn, the flow velocity in each case was calculated and was found to be higher for edge heating, due to the one-directional nature of the heating. Additionally, calculation of the dimensionless Marangoni and Rayleigh numbers yielded the prevalence of Marangoni convection. Heating the water drops also affected the evaporation kinetics by promoting the "stick-slip" regime. Moreover, both the total number of depinning events and the pinning strength were found to be highly dependent on heating location. Lastly, we report a higher than predicted relationship between evaporation rate and heating temperature, due to the added influence of the recirculating flows on temperature distribution and hence evaporation flux

    Dual phase regulation of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis by platelet-activating factor

    Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) serves as a model for multiple sclerosis and is considered to be a CD4+ Th1 cell–mediated autoimmune disease. To investigate the role of platelet-activating factor (PAF) in this disease, PAF receptor (PAFR) KO (PAFR-KO) and wild-type (WT) mice, on a C57BL/6 genetic background, were immunized with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein 35–55. The levels of PAF production and PAFR mRNA expression in the spinal cord (SC) correlated with the EAE symptoms. PAFR-KO mice showed lower incidence and less severe symptoms in the chronic phase of EAE than WT mice. However, no difference was observed in T cell proliferation, Th1-cytokine production, or titer of IgG2a between both genotypes. Before onset, as revealed by microarray analysis, mRNAs of inflammatory mediators and their receptors—including IL-6 and CC chemokine receptor 2—were down-regulated in the SC of PAFR-KO mice compared with WT mice. Moreover, in the chronic phase, the severity of inflammation and demyelination in the SC was substantially reduced in PAFR-KO mice. PAFR-KO macrophages reduced phagocytic activity and subsequent production of TNF-α. These results suggest that PAF plays a dual role in EAE pathology in the induction and chronic phases through the T cell–independent pathways

    Synthesis of the Marine Pyrroloiminoquinone Alkaloids, Discorhabdins

    Many natural products with biologically interesting structures have been isolated from marine animals and plants such as sponges, corals, worms, etc. Some of them are discorhabdin alkaloids. The discorhabdin alkaloids (discorhabdin A-X), isolated from marine sponges, have a unique structure with azacarbocyclic spirocyclohexanone and pyrroloiminoquinone units. Due to their prominent potent antitumor activity, discorhabdins have attracted considerable attention. Many studies have been reported toward the synthesis of discorhabdins. We have accomplished the first total synthesis of discorhabdin A (1), having the strongest activity in vitro among discorhabdins in 2003. In 2009, we have also accomplished the first total synthesis of prianosin B (2), having the 16,17-dehydropyrroloiminoquinone moiety, by a novel dehydrogenation reaction with a catalytic amount of NaN3. These synthetic studies, as well as syntheses of the discorhabdins by various chemists to-date, are reviewed here

    Drop evaporation on rough hot-spots: effect of wetting modes

    Hot-spots are a common occurrence in power electronics which become increasingly hotter as chips become denser. Novel cooling technologies are emerging to cope with this increasing heat load, which imbed a condenser to supply cooling drops to the evaporator resting on the hot-spots. Nonetheless, the evaporation process of the drops has been overlooked. Here, we conducted a series of experiments to understand how the evaporation and motion of drops are influenced by the wetting mode of rough hot-spots. We fabricated three different surfaces exhibiting full (Wenzel) or partial (Cassie–Baxter) wetting and the hot-spot is imposed by laser irradiation. We report a direct link between drop motion and wetting mode with the partial wetting drops being highly mobile, attributable to lower pinning energy based on an energy analysis. This study provides a framework for future modifications in hot-spot cooling to account for drop motion which should greatly influence the overall heat removal performance

The enantiomerically pure compounds can serve as chiral organocatalysts for dearomatizing spirolactonization to show good performances in up to 73 % ee

    QOL after RT or OP for uterine cervix cancer

    This study aimed to research the post-treatment quality of life (QOL) between radiotherapy (RT)- and operation (OP)-treated early cervical cancer survivors, using separate questionnaires for physicians and patients. We administered an observational questionnaire to patients aged 20–70 years old with Stages IB1–IIB cervical cancer who had undergone RT or OP and without recurrence as outpatients for ≥6 months after treatment. We divided 100 registered patients equally into two treatment groups (n = 50 each). The average age was 53 and 44 years in the RT and OP groups, respectively. The RT group included 34 and 66% Stage I and II patients, respectively, whereas the OP group included 66 and 34% Stage I and II patients, respectively. The OP group included 58% of patients with postoperative RT. Combination chemotherapy was performed in 84 and 48% of patients in the RT and OP groups, respectively. On the physicians’ questionnaire, we observed significant differences in bone marrow suppression (RT) and leg edema (OP). On the patients’ questionnaire, significantly more patients had dysuria and leg edema in the OP group than in the RT group, and severe (Score 4–5) leg edema was significantly higher in the post-operative RT group than in the OP only group. The frequency of sexual intercourse decreased after treatment in both groups. On the patients’ questionnaire, there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding sexual activity. These findings are useful to patients and physicians for shared decision-making in treatment choices.     Genetic polymorphism of pleiotrophin is associated with pain experience in Japanese adults Case-control study

    Genetic factors play a role in individual differences in pain experience. Here, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify novel loci regulating pain processing. We conducted a 2-stage GWAS and the candidate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) association study on pain experience using an exploratory cohort of patients with cancer pain. The confirmatory cohort comprised of participants from the general population with and without habitual use of analgesic medication. In the exploratory cohort, we evaluated pain intensity using a numerical rating scale, recorded daily opioid dosages, and calculated pain reduction rate. In the confirmatory cohort, pain experience was defined as habitual nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug usage. Using linear regression models, we identified candidate SNP in the exploratory samples, and tested the association between phenotype and experienced pain in the confirmatory samples. We found 1 novel SNP (rs11764598)—located on the gene encoding for pleiotrophin on chromosome 7—that passed the genome-wide suggestive significance at 20% false discovery rate (FDR) correction in the exploratory samples of patients with cancer pain (P = 1.31 × 10-7, FDR = 0.101). We confirmed its significant association with daily analgesic usage in the confirmatory cohort (P = .028), although the minor allele affected pain experience in an opposite manner. We identified a novel genetic variant associated with pain experience. Further studies are required to validate the role of pleiotrophin in pain processing

    Ultrasonographic characteristics of small hepatocellular carcinoma.

    The ultrasonographic characteristics of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) were investigated. Four typical features of HCCs, "mosaic internal echo pattern", "halo", "lateral shadow" and "posterior echo enhancement", were not recognized in minute HCCs smaller than 2 cm in diameter. These characteristics developed as the tumors grew. Only hypoechoic space-occupying lesions can be considered as small HCCs. In differentiating small HCCs from hypoechoic non-malignant space-occupying lesions in the cirrhotic liver, the ratios of short to long dimensions of the lesions seemed to be important since the ratios of HCCs were significantly larger than those of non-malignant lesions. The fact that 3 hyperechoic small HCCs could not be diagnosed even by celiac arteriography has suggested to us that ultrasonically guided biopsies should be performed in order to differentiate from small hemangiomas. Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels of 1/3 of the patients with HCCs were below 100 ng/ml, indicating that it is impossible to detect small HCCs only by measuring serum AFP.</p
