    [Abstract] The stimule-sensitive and responsive hydrogels were synthesized by radiation polymerization. The effects of copolymer composition, hydrolysis and crosslinking monomers on the electrical responsiveness were investigated and compared with those on the temperature responsiveness. It was observed that the content of electrolytic component strongly affected on the stimule responsiveness and the responses showed a maximum at a certain copolymer composition. It was suggested that the responsiveness had an optimum at a suitable polyelectrolyte in the hydrogels. However, the temperature responsiveness was realized in the absence of polyelectrolytic component, while the electrical responsiveness absolutely required the polyelectrolytic content. The on-off switching release of insulin from the hydrogel under electric field was also investigated

    Separation of Lanthanoids by SiO 2 -P Adsorbent Impregnated with Extractants -13103

    ABSTRACT The adsorption and separation properties of lanthanoids (Ln) were investigated for the mutual separation of trivalent minor actinoids (MA) by using different adsorbents of hydrophobic extractant/SiO 2 -P in solutions of hydrophilic extractant/HNO 3 . The synergistic effect by use of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic extractants was evaluated by batch and column experiments. The results of batch expariments showed the synergistic effect which lowered the K d values of Ln. In column experiments, effective mutual separation between Nd and Sm was demonstrated. These results suggest that the mutual separation between Am and Cm is possible because the K d values of Am and Cm are probably similar to those of Nd and Sm

    Dasatinib cessation after deep molecular response exceeding 2 years and natural killer cell transition during dasatinib consolidation

    Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) improve the prognosis of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) by inducing substantial deep molecular responses (DMR); some patients have successfully discontinued TKI therapy after maintaining DMR for ≥1 year. In this cessation study, we investigated the optimal conditions for dasatinib discontinuation in patients who maintained DMR for ≥2 years. This study included 54 patients with CML who were enrolled in a D‐STOP multicenter prospective trial, had achieved DMR, and had discontinued dasatinib after 2‐year consolidation. Peripheral lymphocyte profiles were analyzed by flow cytometry. The estimated 12‐month treatment‐free survival (TFS) was 62.9% (95% confidence interval: 48.5%‐74.2%). During dasatinib consolidation, the percentage of total lymphocytes and numbers of CD3⁻ CD56⁺ natural killer (NK) cells, CD16⁺ CD56⁺ NK cells and CD56⁺ CD57⁺ NK‐large granular lymphocytes (LGL) were significantly higher in patients with molecular relapse after discontinuation but remained unchanged in patients without molecular relapse for >7 months. At the end of consolidation, patients whose total lymphocytes comprised <41% CD3⁻ CD56⁺ NK cells, <35% CD16⁺ CD56⁺ NK cells, or <27% CD56⁺ CD57⁺ NK‐LGL cells had higher TFS relative to other patients (77% vs 18%; P < .0008; 76% vs 10%; P < .0001; 84% vs 46%; P = .0059, respectively). The increase in the number of these NK cells occurred only during dasatinib consolidation. In patients with DMR, dasatinib discontinuation after 2‐year consolidation can lead to high TFS. This outcome depends significantly on a smaller increase in NK cells during dasatinib consolidation

    he Large Helical Device (LHD) has been extending an operational regime of net-current free plasmas towardsthe fusion relevant condition with taking advantage of a net current-free heliotron concept and employing a superconducting coil system. Heating capability has exceeded 10 MW and the central ion and electron temperatureshave reached 7 and 10 keV, respectively. The maximum value of β and pulse length have been extended to 3.2% and 150 s, respectively. Many encouraging physical findings have been obtained. Topics from recent experiments, which should be emphasized from the aspect of theoretical approaches, are reviewed. Those are (1) Prominent features in the inward shifted configuration, i.e., mitigation of an ideal interchange mode in the configuration with magnetic hill, and confinement improvement due to suppression of both anomalous and neoclassical transport, (2) Demonstration ofbifurcation of radial electric field and associated formation of an internal transport barrier, and (3) Dynamics of magnetic islands and clarification of the role of separatrix

    Quantitative analysis of neodymium, uranium, and palladium in nitric acid solution by reflection absorption spectrophotometry

    Quantitative analysis of Nd, U, or Pd in 3 mol dm[−3] (M) HNO3 was performed by reflection absorption spectrophotometry at ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared (UV/Vis/NIR) region. A sample chamber with optics for reflection measurement was designed and attached to a UV/Vis/NIR spectrophotometer by optical fibers. The reflection absorbance showed linear relations with concentrations of Nd, U, and Pd at the absorbance region less than 0.1. The quantitative analysis was found to be possible for 3 M HNO3 solutions containing [Nd] ~0.2 M, [U] ~0.04 M, or [Pd] ~0.01 M

    Myasthenic crisis appearing after resection of intracardiac ectopic thymoma with superior vena cava syndrome

    Abstract Background We describe herein an extremely rare case of intracardiac ectopic thymoma—only two pure cases have been reported to date—associated with myasthenia gravis, an infrequent complication of ectopic thymoma. Case presentation A 71-year-old woman with superior vena cava syndrome was found to have a large mass mainly located in the right atrium. Tumor resection under cardiopulmonary bypass was performed. The pathological diagnosis was type AB ectopic thymoma. The postoperative course was complicated by progressive respiratory failure, and she was diagnosed with myasthenic crisis based on clinical signs and the edrophonium test. The patient recovered and was weaned from prolonged mechanical ventilation after receiving intravenous immunoglobulin, and was subsequently discharged uneventfully. Conclusions This is the first report of myasthenic crisis due to intracardiac ectopic thymoma. Residual thymoma is a risk factor for the development of post-thymectomy myasthenia gravis, and long-term follow-up is required

    Electronic absorption spectra of palladium(II) in concentrated nitric acid solutions

    Palladium complexation in concentrated nitric acid solutions was studied by UV/Vis absorption spectrophotometry. The ionic strength of the solutions was fixed to I = 1, 3, or 5 mol dm−3 (M) by mixing of HNO3 and HClO4. The major palladium species were found to be Pd2+, PdNO3 +, and Pd(NO3)2. The formation constant of PdNO3 + was determined to be β 1 = 1.32 (I = 1 M), 1.49 (I = 3 M), or 1.47 (I = 5 M), while that of Pd(NO3)2 to be β 2 = 0.45 (I = 3 M) or 0.14 (I = 5 M)
