    Phase transformation-induced improvement in hardness and high-temperature wear resistance of plasma-sprayed and remelted NiCrBSi/WC coatings

    Β© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The remelting method is introduced to improve the properties of the as-sprayed NiCrBSi coatings. In this work, tungsten carbide (WC) was selected as reinforcement and the as-sprayed and remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coatings were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, hardness test and tribology test. After spraying, WC particles are evenly distributed in the coating. The remelting process induced the decarburizing reaction of WC, resulting in the formation of dispersed W2 C. The dispersed W2 C particles play an important role in the dispersion strengthening. Meanwhile, the pores and lamellar structures are eliminated in the remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coating. Due to these two advantages, the hardness and the high-temperature wear resistance of the remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coating are significantly improved compared with those with an as-sprayed NiCrBSi coating; the as-sprayed NiCrBSi coating, as-sprayed NiCrBSi/WC composite coating and remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coating have average hardness of 673.82 HV, 785.14 HV, 1061.23 HV, and their friction coefficients are 0.3418, 0.3261, 0.2431, respectively. The wear volume of the remelted NiCrBSi/WC composite coating is only one-third of that of the as-sprayed NiCrBSi coating

    Chronic salmon calcitonin exerts an antidepressant effect via modulating the p38 MAPK signaling pathway

    Depression is a common recurrent psychiatric disorder with a high lifetime prevalence and suicide rate. At present, although several traditional clinical drugs such as fluoxetine and ketamine, are widely used, medications with a high efficiency and reduced side effects are of urgent need. Our group has recently reported that a single administration of salmon calcitonin (sCT) could ameliorate a depressive-like phenotype via the amylin signaling pathway in a mouse model established by chronic restraint stress (CRS). However, the molecular mechanism underlying the antidepressant effect needs to be addressed. In this study, we investigated the antidepressant potential of sCT applied chronically and its underlying mechanism. In addition, using transcriptomics, we found the MAPK signaling pathway was upregulated in the hippocampus of CRS-treated mice. Further phosphorylation levels of ERK/p38/JNK kinases were also enhanced, and sCT treatment was able only to downregulate the phosphorylation level of p38/JNK, with phosphorylated ERK level unaffected. Finally, we found that the antidepressant effect of sCT was blocked by p38 agonists rather than JNK agonists. These results provide a mechanistic explanation of the antidepressant effect of sCT, suggesting its potential for treating the depressive disorder in the clinic

    Though extensively studied, hardness, defined as the resistance of a material to deformation, still remains a challenging issue for a formal theoretical description due to its inherent mechanical complexity. The widely applied Teter's empirical correlation between hardness and shear modulus has been considered to be not always valid for a large variety of materials. Here, inspired by the classical work on Pugh's modulus ratio, we develop a theoretical model which establishes a robust correlation between hardness and elasticity for a wide class of materials, including bulk metallic glasses, with results in very good agreement with experiment. The simplified form of our model also provides an unambiguous theoretical evidence for Teter's empirical correlation.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures and 3 table

    We established a method on measuring the \dzdzb mixing parameter yy for BESIII experiment at the BEPCII e+eβˆ’e^+e^- collider. In this method, the doubly tagged ψ(3770)β†’D0D0β€Ύ\psi(3770) \to D^0 \overline{D^0} events, with one DD decays to CP-eigenstates and the other DD decays semileptonically, are used to reconstruct the signals. Since this analysis requires good e/Ο€e/\pi separation, a likelihood approach, which combines the dE/dxdE/dx, time of flight and the electromagnetic shower detectors information, is used for particle identification. We estimate the sensitivity of the measurement of yy to be 0.007 based on a 20fbβˆ’120fb^{-1} fully simulated MC sample.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Experimental and Numerical Analysis of High-Resolution Injection Technique for Capillary Electrophoresis Microchip

    This study presents an experimental and numerical investigation on the use of high-resolution injection techniques to deliver sample plugs within a capillary electrophoresis (CE) microchip. The CE microfluidic device was integrated into a U-shaped injection system and an expansion chamber located at the inlet of the separation channel, which can miniize the sample leakage effect and deliver a high-quality sample plug into the separation channel so that the detection performance of the device is enhanced. The proposed 45Β° U-shaped injection system was investigated using a sample of Rhodamine B dye. Meanwhile, the analysis of the current CE microfluidic chip was studied by considering the separation of Hae III digested Ο•x-174 DNA samples. The experimental and numerical results indicate that the included 45Β° U-shaped injector completely eliminates the sample leakage and an expansion separation channel with an expansion ratio of 2.5 delivers a sample plug with a perfect detection shape and highest concentration intensity, hence enabling an optimal injection and separation performance

    A global analysis of COVID-19 infection fatality rate and its associated factors during the Delta and Omicron variant periods: an ecological study

    BackgroundThe Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is more highly infectious and transmissible than prior variants of concern. It was unclear which factors might have contributed to the alteration of COVID-19 cases and deaths during the Delta and Omicron variant periods. This study aimed to compare the COVID-19 average weekly infection fatality rate (AWIFR), investigate factors associated with COVID-19 AWIFR, and explore the factors linked to the increase in COVID-19 AWIFR between two periods of Delta and Omicron variants.Materials and methodsAn ecological study has been conducted among 110 countries over the first 12 weeks during two periods of Delta and Omicron variant dominance using open publicly available datasets. Our analysis included 102 countries in the Delta period and 107 countries in the Omicron period. Linear mixed-effects models and linear regression models were used to explore factors associated with the variation of AWIFR over Delta and Omicron periods.FindingsDuring the Delta period, the lower AWIFR was witnessed in countries with better government effectiveness index [Ξ² = βˆ’0.762, 95% CI (βˆ’1.238)–(βˆ’0.287)] and higher proportion of the people fully vaccinated [Ξ² = βˆ’0.385, 95% CI (βˆ’0.629)–(βˆ’0.141)]. In contrast, a higher burden of cardiovascular diseases was positively associated with AWIFR (Ξ² = 0.517, 95% CI 0.102–0.932). Over the Omicron period, while years lived with disability (YLD) caused by metabolism disorders (Ξ² = 0.843, 95% CI 0.486–1.2), the proportion of the population aged older than 65 years (Ξ² = 0.737, 95% CI 0.237–1.238) was positively associated with poorer AWIFR, and the high proportion of the population vaccinated with a booster dose [Ξ² = βˆ’0.321, 95% CI (βˆ’0.624)–(βˆ’0.018)] was linked with the better outcome. Over two periods of Delta and Omicron, the increase in government effectiveness index was associated with a decrease in AWIFR [Ξ² = βˆ’0.438, 95% CI (βˆ’0.750)–(βˆ’0.126)]; whereas, higher death rates caused by diabetes and kidney (Ξ² = 0.472, 95% CI 0.089–0.855) and percentage of population aged older than 65 years (Ξ² = 0.407, 95% CI 0.013–0.802) were associated with a significant increase in AWIFR.ConclusionThe COVID-19 infection fatality rates were strongly linked with the coverage of vaccination rate, effectiveness of government, and health burden related to chronic diseases. Therefore, proper policies for the improvement of vaccination coverage and support of vulnerable groups could substantially mitigate the burden of COVID-19
