Nondecoupling of Heavy Fermions and a Special Yukawa Texture
Talk based on work entitled ``Yukawa textures, new physics and
nondecoupling,'' done in collaboration with G. C. Branco and J. I.
Silva-Marcos, arXiv:hep-ph/0612252, to appear in Phys. Rev. D. In this work we
pointed out that New Physics can play an important r\^ ole in rescuing some of
the Yukawa texture zero ans\" atze which would otherwise be eliminated by the
recent, more precise measurements of . We have shown that the presence
of an isosinglet vector-like quark which mixes with standard quarks, can render
viable a particularly interesting four texture zero Yukawa ansatz. The crucial
point is the nondecoupling of the effects of the isosinglet quark, even for
arbitrary large values of its mass.Comment: Invited talk at CTP Symposium on Supersymmetry at LHC: Theoretical

In-plane thermal conductivity of large single crystals of Sm-substituted (YSm)BaCuO
We have investigated the in-plane thermal conductivity of
large single crystals of optimally oxygen-doped
(Y,Sm)BaCuO (=0, 0.1, 0.2 and 1.0)
and YBa(CuZn)O(=0.0071) as functions
of temperature and magnetic field (along the c axis). For comparison, the
temperature dependence of for as-grown crystals with the
corresponding compositions are presented.
The nonlinear field dependence of for all crystals was observed
at relatively low fields near a half of . We make fits of the
data to an electron contribution model, providing both the mean
free path of quasiparticles and the electronic thermal conductivity
, in the absence of field. The local lattice distortion due to the
Sm substitution for Y suppresses both the phonon and electron contributions. On
the other hand, the light Zn doping into the CuO planes affects solely
the electron component below , resulting in a substantial decrease in

Wood-Inspired Morphologically Tunable Aligned Hydrogel for High-Performance Flexible All-Solid-State Supercapacitors
Oriented microstructures are widely found in various biological systems for multiple functions. Such anisotropic structures provide low tortuosity and sufficient surface area, desirable for the design of high-performance energy storage devices. Despite significant efforts to develop supercapacitors with aligned morphology, challenges remain due to the predefined pore sizes, limited mechanical flexibility, and low mass loading. Herein, a wood-inspired flexible all-solid-state hydrogel supercapacitor is demonstrated by morphologically tuning the aligned hydrogel matrix toward high electrode-materials loading and high areal capacitance. The highly aligned matrix exhibits broad morphological tunability (47–12 µm), mechanical flexibility (0°–180° bending), and uniform polypyrrole loading up to 7 mm thick matrix. After being assembled into a solid-state supercapacitor, the areal capacitance reaches 831 mF cm−2 for the 12 µm matrix, which is 259% times of the 47 µm matrix and 403% times of nonaligned matrix. The supercapacitor also exhibits a high energy density of 73.8 µWh cm−2, power density of 4960 µW cm−2, capacitance retention of 86.5% after 1000 cycles, and bending stability of 95% after 5000 cycles. The principle to structurally design the oriented matrices for high electrode material loading opens up the possibility for advanced energy storage applications
The effect of Mach number on unstable disturbances in shock/boundary-layer interactions
The effect of Mach number on the growth of unstable disturbances in a boundary layer undergoing a strong interaction with an impinging oblique shock wave is studied by direct numerical simulation and linear stability theory (LST). To reduce the number of independent parameters, test cases are arranged so that both the interaction location Reynolds number (based on the distance from the plate leading edge to the shock impingement location for a corresponding inviscid flow) and the separation bubble length Reynolds number are held fixed. Small-amplitude disturbances are introduced via both white-noise and harmonic forcing and, after verification that the disturbances are convective in nature, linear growth rates are extracted from the simulations for comparison with parallel flow LST and solutions of the parabolized stability equations (PSE). At Mach 2.0, the oblique modes are dominant and consistent results are obtained from simulation and theory. At Mach 4.5 and Mach 6.85, the linear Navier-Stokes results show large reductions in disturbance energy at the point where the shock impinges on the top of the separated shear layer. The most unstable second mode has only weak growth over the bubble region, which instead shows significant growth of streamwise structures. The two higher Mach number cases are not well predicted by parallel flow LST, which gives frequencies and spanwise wave numbers that are significantly different from the simulations. The PSE approach leads to good qualitative predictions of the dominant frequency and wavenumber at Mach 2.0 and 4.5, but suffers from reduced accuracy in the region immediately after the shock impingement. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes simulations are used to demonstrate that at finite amplitudes the flow structures undergo a nonlinear breakdown to turbulence. This breakdown is enhanced when the oblique-mode disturbances are supplemented with unstable Mack modes
Near-linear Time Algorithm for Approximate Minimum Degree Spanning Trees
Given a graph , we wish to compute a spanning tree whose maximum
vertex degree, i.e. tree degree, is as small as possible. Computing the exact
optimal solution is known to be NP-hard, since it generalizes the Hamiltonian
path problem. For the approximation version of this problem, a
time algorithm that computes a spanning tree of degree at most is
previously known [F\"urer \& Raghavachari 1994]; here denotes the
minimum tree degree of all the spanning trees. In this paper we give the first
near-linear time approximation algorithm for this problem. Specifically
speaking, we propose an time algorithm that
computes a spanning tree with tree degree for any constant .
Thus, when , we can achieve approximate solutions with
constant approximate ratio arbitrarily close to 1 in near-linear time.Comment: 17 page
Disks around massive young stellar objects: are they common?
We present K-band polarimetric images of several massive young stellar
objects at resolutions 0.1-0.5 arcsec. The polarization vectors around
these sources are nearly centro-symmetric, indicating they are dominating the
illumination of each field. Three out of the four sources show elongated
low-polarization structures passing through the centers, suggesting the
presence of polarization disks. These structures and their surrounding
reflection nebulae make up bipolar outflow/disk systems, supporting the
collapse/accretion scenario as their low-mass siblings. In particular, S140
IRS1 show well defined outflow cavity walls and a polarization disk which
matches the direction of previously observed equatorial disk wind, thus
confirming the polarization disk is actually the circumstellar disk. To date, a
dozen massive protostellar objects show evidence for the existence of disks;
our work add additional samples around MYSOs equivalent to early B-type stars.Comment: 9 pages, including 2 figures, 1 table, to appear on ApJ
Edge states and topological orders in the spin liquid phases of star lattice
A group of novel materials can be mapped to the star lattice, which exhibits
some novel physical properties. We give the bulk-edge correspondence theory of
the star lattice and study the edge states and their topological orders in
different spin liquid phases. The bulk and edge-state energy structures and
Chern number depend on the spin liquid phases and hopping parameters because
the local spontaneous magnetic flux in the spin liquid phase breaks the time
reversal and space inversion symmetries. We give the characteristics of bulk
and edge energy structures and their corresponding Chern numbers in the
uniform, nematic and chiral spin liquids. In particular, we obtain analytically
the phase diagram of the topological orders for the chiral spin liquid states
SL[\phi,\phi,-2\phi], where \phi is the magnetic flux in two triangles and a
dodecagon in the unit cell. Moreover, we find the topological invariance for
the spin liquid phases, SL[\phi_{1},\phi_{2},-(\phi_{1}+\phi_{2})] and
SL[\phi_{2},\phi_{1},-(\phi_{1}+\phi_{2})]. The results reveal the relationship
between the energy-band and edge-state structures and their topological orders
of the star lattice.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
Evolution of worldwide stock markets, correlation structure and correlation based graphs
We investigate the daily correlation present among market indices of stock
exchanges located all over the world in the time period Jan 1996 - Jul 2009. We
discover that the correlation among market indices presents both a fast and a
slow dynamics. The slow dynamics reflects the development and consolidation of
globalization. The fast dynamics is associated with critical events that
originate in a specific country or region of the world and rapidly affect the
global system. We provide evidence that the short term timescale of correlation
among market indices is less than 3 trading months (about 60 trading days). The
average values of the non diagonal elements of the correlation matrix,
correlation based graphs and the spectral properties of the largest eigenvalues
and eigenvectors of the correlation matrix are carrying information about the
fast and slow dynamics of correlation of market indices. We introduce a measure
of mutual information based on link co-occurrence in networks, in order to
detect the fast dynamics of successive changes of correlation based graphs in a
quantitative way.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure
