    Soft-switching vector control for resonant snubber based inverters

    This paper gives a new classification of soft-switching inverters according to the principle of operation. After discussing the soft-switching phenomena in hard-switching inverters, the concept of soft-switching vector (SSV) is introduced. The proposed SSV is not only helpful in analyzing the changes of switching states, but also easily realized in control scheme. Theoretical analyses are conducted step by step for both with and without SSV control applied to resonant snubber based inverters (RSI). The experimental results closely agree with theoretical analyses and show the significant reduction in power loss after using SSV. Moreover, a modified version of SSV is also presented to achieve the better working condition at low load current with current ripple.published_or_final_versio

    Nonlinear modeling and spectral analysis of Cuk converters

    Being a fourth-order circuit, the Cuk converter certainly needs alone systematic studies of its nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, the investigation of the nonlinear dynamics of Cuk converters is carried out by deriving their nonlinear models and performing their spectral analyses. Nonlinear dynamics, including the additional dc offset, significant subharmonic and higher harmonic spectral contamination as well as the effects of self-intermodulation and cross-intermodulation, due to large-signal perturbations of both the duty ratio and source voltage, are investigated.published_or_final_versio

    A novel soft-switching inverter using resonant inductor freewheeling

    A novel topology of the voltage-source soft-switching inverter for induction motor drives is presented. The key of this topology is to employ two fractional-duty auxiliary switches and one resonant inductor per phase to provide a favorable zero-voltage turn-on condition for those main switches. By fully utilizing the inherent natural freewheeling of the inverter, the auxiliary switches need to operate in the resonant inductor freewheeling only in a fractional duty. Apart from providing a soft-switching environment with minimum voltage and current stresses, the distinct advantage of this topology is its capability to control the operation of each phase individually. Therefore, this inverter can readily adopt the well-established PWM techniques while possessing the advantages of soft switching-namely PWM-oriented soft switching. Moreover, a new concept of the zero-voltage soft-switching vector is introduced to determine whether the auxiliary circuit needs to operate to achieving soft switching.     Image-based compression, prioritized transmission and progressive rendering of circular light fields (CLFS) for ancient Chinese artifacts

    This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for the compression, prioritized transmission and progressive rendering of circular light field (CLF) for ancient Chinese artifacts. It employs wavelet coder to achieve spatial scalability and divide the compressed data into a lower resolution base layer and an additional enhancement layer. The enhancement layer is coded as in JPEG2000 into packets where the base-layer is coded using disparity compensation prediction (DCP). The frame structure is designed to provide efficient access to the compressed data in order to support selective transmission and decoding. The depth and alpha maps are coded analogously.     Switching characteristics and efficiency improvement with auxiliaryresonant snubber based soft-switching inverters

    The auxiliary resonant snubber inverter (RSI) has demonstrated superiority in reduction of switching losses and dv/dt. It was found that the overall inverter system efficiency might not be improved if the resonant current was not controlled in accordance with the load current. This paper proposes an improved control scheme to minimize the operation of auxiliary circuit for efficiency improvement. The principle of this control scheme is to vary the resonant current with variable timing control based on the load current magnitude and to disable the auxiliary circuit operation when diode freewheeling occurs after switching. To illustrate the operation of this control scheme, this paper compares the switching characteristics and inverter power loss of hard-switching inverter, RSI with fixed-timing and variable-timing control and RSI with the proposed control scheme. Experimental results fully agree with the analyses and prove that the proposed control scheme is suitable for RSI to achieve better operating conditions.published_or_final_versio

    Rôle hydrogéologique des linéaments structuraux en milieu cristallin et cristallophyllien : cas du bassin versant du Sassandra, Sud-Ouest de la Côte d’Ivoire

    La zone d’étude est située en milieu tropical humide au sud-ouest de la Côte d’Ivoire dans les formations plutoniques et métamorphiques précambriennes. L’objectif est d’étudier l’effet des linéaments structuraux dans l’hydrodynamisme souterrain dans un tel environnement en se basant sur des données de télédétection, de forages, des teneurs SO42- et Cl- des eaux souterraines. Le traitement des images satellitaires a donné la carte des linéaments qui a servi au choix des sites d’échantillonnage d’eau souterraine et à l’individualisation des « blocs ». Les rapports de SO42- et Cl- a permis d’identifier les linéaments participant à la circulation de l’eau souterraine à l’échelle régionale. L’analyse des données géométriques des blocs et des débits des forages a permis de mettre en évidence le rôle hydrogéologique prépondérant des petits linéaments par rapport aux linéaments majeurs. Confirmant ainsi l’importance de l’horizon fissuré et la topographie dans l’écoulement souterrain en milieu de socle cristallin et cristallophyllien.Mots-clés: aquifères de socle, bloc, débit, horizon fissuré, hydrodynamisme.Hydrogeological role of structural lineaments in plutonic and metamorphic environment: Case of Sassandra Watershed (South-Western Côte d'Ivoire)The survey area is located south-west of Ivory Coast in Precambrian metamorphic and plutonic zone. The aim is to study the contribution of structural lineaments in the underground hydrodynamics in such environment. To highlight the network of kilometer-scale fractures in hard-rock, remote sensing techniques, drilling and concentrations SOSO42- and Cl- in groundwater were used. The map of lineaments obtained after processing of satellite images has been discretized into blocks aquifers which are delimited by opened or clogged fractures that can have a conducting or watertight function. Analysis of the geometric block parameters and the drilling instantaneous discharge helped highlight the leading role hydrogeological small fractures (fissured layer) compared to major lineaments in groundwater flow of in hard-rock.     Do frailty and comorbidity indices improve risk prediction of 28-day ED reattendance? Reanalysis of an ED discharge nomogram for older people

    Background: In older people, quantification of risk of reattendance after emergency department (ED) discharge is important to provide adequate post ED discharge care in the community to appropriately targeted patients at risk. Methods: We reanalysed data from a prospective observational study, previously used for derivation of a nomogram for stratifying people aged 65 and older at risk for ED reattendance. We investigated the potential effect of comorbidity load and frailty by adding the Charlson or Elixhauser comorbidity index and a ten-item frailty measure from our data to develop four new nomograms. Model I and model F built on the original nomogram by including the frailty measure with and without the addition of the Charlson comorbidity score; model E adapted for efficiency in the time-constrained environment of ED was without the frailty measure; and model P manually constructed in a purposeful stepwise manner and including only statistically significant variables. Areas under the ROC curve of models were compared. The primary outcome was any ED reattendance within 28 days of discharge. Results: Data from 1357 patients were used. The point estimate of the respective areas under ROC were 0.63 (O), 0.63 (I), 0.68 (E), 0.71 (P) and 0.63 (F). Conclusion: Addition of a comorbidity index to our previous model improves stratifying elderly at risk of ED reattendance. Our frailty measure did not demonstrate any additional predictive benefit

    Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated Channels Contribute to Thromboxane A2-Induced Contraction of Rat Small Mesenteric Arteries

    Background: Thromboxane A 2 (TxA 2)-induced smooth muscle contraction has been implicated in cardiovascular, renal and respiratory diseases. This contraction can be partly attributed to TxA2-induced Ca 2+ influx, which resulted in vascular contraction via Ca 2+-calmodulin-MLCK pathway. This study aims to identify the channels that mediate TxA2-induced Ca 2+ influx in vascular smooth muscle cells. Methodology/Principal Findings: Application of U-46619, a thromboxane A2 mimic, resulted in a constriction in endothelium-denuded small mesenteric artery segments. The constriction relies on the presence of extracellular Ca 2+, because removal of extracellular Ca 2+ abolished the constriction. This constriction was partially inhibited by an L-type Ca 2+ channel inhibitor nifedipine (0.5–1 mM). The remaining component was inhibited by L-cis-diltiazem, a selective inhibitor for CNG channels, in a dose-dependent manner. Another CNG channel blocker LY83583 [6-(phenylamino)-5,8-quinolinedione] had similar effect. In the primary cultured smooth muscle cells derived from rat aorta, application of U46619 (100 nM) induced a rise in cytosolic Ca 2+ ([Ca 2+]i), which was inhibited by L-cis-diltiazem. Immunoblot experiments confirmed the presence of CNGA2 protein in vascular smooth muscle cells. Conclusions/Significance: These data suggest a functional role of CNG channels in U-46619-induced Ca 2+ influx and contraction of smooth muscle cells

    Building nonparametric nn-body force fields using Gaussian process regression

    Constructing a classical potential suited to simulate a given atomic system is a remarkably difficult task. This chapter presents a framework under which this problem can be tackled, based on the Bayesian construction of nonparametric force fields of a given order using Gaussian process (GP) priors. The formalism of GP regression is first reviewed, particularly in relation to its application in learning local atomic energies and forces. For accurate regression it is fundamental to incorporate prior knowledge into the GP kernel function. To this end, this chapter details how properties of smoothness, invariance and interaction order of a force field can be encoded into corresponding kernel properties. A range of kernels is then proposed, possessing all the required properties and an adjustable parameter nn governing the interaction order modelled. The order nn best suited to describe a given system can be found automatically within the Bayesian framework by maximisation of the marginal likelihood. The procedure is first tested on a toy model of known interaction and later applied to two real materials described at the DFT level of accuracy. The models automatically selected for the two materials were found to be in agreement with physical intuition. More in general, it was found that lower order (simpler) models should be chosen when the data are not sufficient to resolve more complex interactions.
