Putting Structure into Fluidized Bed ā€“ From Concept to Industrial Applications

    Get PDF
Structures of particles, particle agglomerates, distributors, and internals have significantly influence on hydrodynamics and transfer behaviors of the dense gas-solid fluidized bed. For nanomaterial production, the particle surface and their agglomerated structures directly influence the fluidization behaviors; while for coal to chemical process, the distributors, internals play an important role in regime transient, and hydrodynamics. Carbon nanotubes mass production, coal to chemicals process. and fuel production were employed as examples to describe the concept of putting structures into fluidized bed, and then to put these structures into industrial applications

Abstract

Background

Statins are first-line pharmacotherapeutic agents for hypercholesterolemia treatment in humans. However the effects of statins on atherosclerosis in mouse models are very paradoxical. In this work, we wanted to evaluate the effects of simvastatin on serum cholesterol, atherogenesis, and the expression of several factors playing important roles in reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) in apoE-/- mice fed a high-fat diet.

Results

The atherosclerotic lesion formation displayed by oil red O staining positive area was reduced significantly by 35% or 47% in either aortic root section or aortic arch en face in simvastatin administrated apoE-/- mice compared to the control. Plasma analysis by enzymatic method or ELISA showed that high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) contents were remarkably increased by treatment with simvastatin. And plasma lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity was markedly increased by simvastatin treatment. Real-time PCR detection disclosed that the expression of several transporters involved in reverse cholesterol transport, including macrophage scavenger receptor class B type I, hepatic ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters ABCG5, and ABCB4 were induced by simvastatin treatment, the expression of hepatic ABCA1 and apoA-I, which play roles in the maturation of HDL-C, were also elevated in simvastatin treated groups.

Conclusions

We demonstrated the anti-atherogenesis effects of simvastatin in apoE-/- mice fed a high-fat diet. We confirmed here for the first time simvastatin increased the expression of hepatic ABCB4 and ABCG5, which involved in secretion of cholesterol and bile acids into the bile, besides upregulated ABCA1 and apoA-I. The elevated HDL-C level, increased LCAT activity and the stimulation of several transporters involved in RCT may all contribute to the anti-atherosclerotic effect of simvastatin.</p

Optimization of Base Location and Patrol Routes for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Border Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance

    Get PDF
The location-routing problem (LRP) of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in border patrol for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance is investigated, where the locations of UAV base stations and the UAV flying routes for visiting the targets in border area are jointly optimized. The capacity of the base station and the endurance of the UAV are considered. A binary integer programming model is developed to formulate the problem, and two heuristic algorithms combined with local search strategies are designed for solving the problem. The experiment design for simulating the distribution of stations and targets in border is proposed for generating random test instances. Also, an example based on the practical border in Guangxi is presented to illustrate the problem and the solution approach. The performance of the two algorithms is analysed and compared through randomly generated instances. Document type: Articl

A capsule network-based method for identifying transcription factors

Transcription factors (TFs) are typical regulators for gene expression and play versatile roles in cellular processes. Since it is time-consuming, costly, and labor-intensive to detect it by using physical methods, it is desired to develop a computational method to detect TFs. Here, we presented a capsule network-based method for identifying TFs. This method is an end-to-end deep learning method, consisting mainly of an embedding layer, bidirectional long short-term memory (LSTM) layer, capsule network layer, and three fully connected layers. The presented method obtained an accuracy of 0.8820, being superior to the state-of-the-art methods. These empirical experiments showed that the inclusion of the capsule network promoted great performances and that the capsule network-based representation was superior to the property-based representation for distinguishing between TFs and non-TFs. We also implemented the presented method into a user-friendly web server, which is freely available at http://www.biolscience.cn/Capsule_TF/ for all scientific researchers
