NIR Hyperspectral Imaging for Mapping of Moisture Content Distribution in Tea Buds during Dehydration

    Get PDF
This work employed hyperspectral imaging technique to map the spatial distribution of moisture content (MC) in tea buds during dehydration. Hyperspectral images (874–1734 nm) of tea buds were acquired in six dehydrated periods (0, 3, 6, 9, 14 and 21 min) at 80°C. The spectral reflectance of tea buds were extracted from region of interests (ROIs) in the hyperspectral images. Competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) was used to select effective wavelengths (EWs) and ten representing the wavelengths were selected. The quantitative relationship between spectral reflectance and the measured MC values of tea buds was built using partial least square regression (PLSR) based on full spectra and EWs. The quantitative model established using EWs, which had a result of coefficient of correlation (RP) of 0.941 and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 5.31%, was considered as the optimal model for mapping MC distribution. The optimal model was finally applied to predict the MC of each pixel within of the tea bud sample and built the MC distribution maps by utilization of a developed image processing procedure. Results demonstrated that the hyperspectral imaging technique has the potential of mapping the MC spatial distribution in tea buds in dehydrated process

Influence of frost damage on water penetration into neat and air entrained concrete

    Get PDF
In service life, concrete can be damaged either by mechanical or environmental loads or by combined ones. These damages will strongly influence water movement in concrete which could later lead to more serious deteriorations. This paper applies neutron radiography to investigate the influence of frost damage on water penetration into concrete. In addition, the improvement of frost resistance by addition of air entrainment was investigated. The results indicate that it is possible to visualize penetration of water into the porous structure of concrete by neutron radiography. Further evaluation of the test data allows determining time-dependent moisture profiles quantitatively with high resolution. After concrete is damaged by freeze-thaw cycles water penetration into ordinary concrete is accelerated. It can be shown that frost damage is not equally distributed in specimens exposed to freeze-thaw cycles. Thermal gradients lead to more serious damage near the surface. The beneficial effect of air entrainment on frost resistance has been demonstrated. After 50 freeze-thaw cycles, air entrained concrete showed no measurable increase in water absorption. But layers near the surface of concrete absorbed slightly more water after 200 freeze-thaw cycles although the dynamic elastic modulus remained constant. Results presented in this paper help us to better understand mechanisms of frost damage of concrete

A robust partial least square (PLS) calibration model with high accuracy and stability was established for the measurement of soluble solids content (SSC) of fresh jujube using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopytechnique. Fresh jujube samples were collected in different areas of Taigu and Taiyuan cities, central China in 2008 and 2009. A partial least squares (PLS) calibration model was established based on the NIR spectra of 70 fresh jujube samples collected in 2008. A good calibration result was obtained with correlation coefficient (Rc) of 0.9530 and the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) of 0.3951 °Brix. Another PLS calibration model was established based on the NIR spectral of 180 samples collected in 2009; it resulted in the Rc of 0.8536 and the RMSEC of 1.1410 °Brix. It could be seen that the accuracy of established PLS models were different when samples harvested in different years were used for the model calibration. In order to improve the accuracy and robustness of model, different numbers (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40) of samples harvested in 2008 were added to the calibration sample set of the model with samples harvested in 2009, respectively. The established PLS models obtained Rc with the range of 0.8846 to 0.8893 and RMSEC with the range of 1.0248 to 0.9645 °Brix. The obtained results werebetter than the result of the model which was established only with samples harvested in 2009. Moreover, the models established using different numbers of added samples had similar results. Therefore, it was concluded that adding samples from another harvest year could improve the accuracy and robustness of the model for SSC prediction of fresh jujube. The overall results proved that the consideration of samples from different harvest places and years would be useful for establishing an accuracy and robustness spectral model. Keywords: Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, Huping jujube, soluble solids content (SSC), partial least squares (PLS), accuracy, stabilit

Medium Access Control Game with An Enhanced

    Get PDF
Abstract-We consider distributed medium access control in a wireless network where each link layer user (transmitter) is equipped with multiple transmission options as opposed to the classical binary options of transmitting/idling. In each time slot, a user randomly chooses a transmission option according to a "transmission probability vector". Packets sent by the users are either received or lost depending on whether reliable decoding is supported by the communication channel. We propose a game theoretic model for distributed medium access control where each user adapts its transmission probability vector to maximize a utility function. Condition under which the medium access control game has a unique Nash equilibrium is obtained. Simulation results show that, when multiple transmission options are provided, users in a distributed network tend to converge to channel sharing schemes that are consistent with the well-known information theoretic understandings

The structures combining the veins and membranes of membranous wings of the Chinese bee Apis cerana cerana Fabricius into a whole have excellent load-resisting capacity. The membranous wings of Chinese bees were taken as research objects and the mechanical properties of a biomimetic model of membranous wings as targets. In order to understand and learn from the biosystem and then make technical innovation, the membranous wings of Chinese bees were simulated and analysed with reverse engineering and finite element method. The deformations and stress states of the finite element model of membranous wings were researched under the concentrated force, uniform load, and torque. It was found that the whole model deforms evenly and there are no unusual deformations arising. The displacements and deformations are small and transform uniformly. It was indicated that the veins and membranes combine well into a whole to transmit loads effectively, which illustrates the membranous wings of Chinese bees having excellent integral mechanical behaviour and structure stiffness. The realization of structure models of the membranous wings of Chinese bees and analysis of the relativity of structures and performances or functions will provide an inspiration for designing biomimetic thin-film materials with superior load-bearing capacity

Experiments on bright field and dark field high energy electron imaging with thick target material

Using a high energy electron beam for the imaging of high density matter with both high spatial-temporal and areal density resolution under extreme states of temperature and pressure is one of the critical challenges in high energy density physics . When a charged particle beam passes through an opaque target, the beam will be scattered with a distribution that depends on the thickness of the material. By collecting the scattered beam either near or off axis, so-called bright field or dark field images can be obtained. Here we report on an electron radiography experiment using 45 MeV electrons from an S-band photo-injector, where scattered electrons, after interacting with a sample, are collected and imaged by a quadrupole imaging system. We achieved a few micrometers (about 4 micrometers) spatial resolution and about 10 micrometers thickness resolution for a silicon target of 300-600 micron thickness. With addition of dark field images that are captured by selecting electrons with large scattering angle, we show that more useful information in determining external details such as outlines, boundaries and defects can be obtained.Comment: 7pages, 7 figure

Formation Mechanisms of Odor Substances in Mutton and Deodorization Methods: A Review

    Get PDF
Mutton is a high-quality meat with high nutritional value. However, the typical species-specific flavor (odor) of mutton affects its quality and limits its consumer acceptance. Studies have shown that the major substances that cause mutton odor are 4-alkyl branched fatty acids, 3-methylindole, 4-methylphenol, stearic acids, and amino acids. The composition and formation pathway of mutton odor substances are complex and influenced by various factors such as nutrition, feeding system, variety, sex, age, and tissue position, so it is difficult to reduce mutton odor. Therefore, this article reviews the sources and formation mechanisms of mutton odor substances, the factors affecting the formation of mutton odor substances, and deodorization methods, which will provide a basis for scientifically regulating the flavor of mutton and its products

In cold coastal area, the destruction mechanism of reinforced concrete structures is mainly governed by a combination of factors such as self-loading, freeze-thaw and chloride erosion. In this study, ordinary cube concretes (C30 and C50, while w/c = 0.53 and 0.35 respectively) underwent a coupling effect of pressure load with stress ratio of 0, 0.3 and 0.5 and freeze-thaw cycles, following by capillary water absorption test and chloride penetration test. Concrete samples with 0.3fc showed the best water and chloride penetration resistance under the coupling effect, followed by samples with 0.5fc and 0fc, which is consistent with the conclusion that under load only. Water and chloride ions penetration increased sharply when freeze-thaw cycles was over 100 times, which is different with samples without load. Outside part of concrete showed higher permeability and chloride content than inside part. MIP results confirmed that stress played an important role in the water absorption and chloride penetration of concrete under the coupling effect. These results provide important new insights into the permeability of concrete under a coupling effect. The applied load performed a more important role on the service life prediction of concrete structure
