    Numerical investigations of flow around subsea covers at high Reynolds numbers

    Two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations of flow over wall-mounted rectangular and trapezoidal ribs subjected to a turbulent boundary layer flow with the normalized boundary layer thickness of δ/D = 0.73,1.96,2.52 (D is the height of the ribs) have been carried out by using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations combined with the k – ω SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model. The angles of the two side slopes of trapezoidal rib varies from 0° to 60°. The Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity U∞ and D are 1 × 106 and 2 × 106. The results obtained from the present numerical simulations are in good agreement with the published experimental data. Furthermore, the effects of the angle of the two side slopes of the trapezoidal ribs, the Reynolds number and the boundary layer thickness on the hydrodynamic quantities are discussed.publishedVersio

    PP-MeT: a Real-world Personalized Prompt based Meeting Transcription System

    Speaker-attributed automatic speech recognition (SA-ASR) improves the accuracy and applicability of multi-speaker ASR systems in real-world scenarios by assigning speaker labels to transcribed texts. However, SA-ASR poses unique challenges due to factors such as speaker overlap, speaker variability, background noise, and reverberation. In this study, we propose PP-MeT system, a real-world personalized prompt based meeting transcription system, which consists of a clustering system, target-speaker voice activity detection (TS-VAD), and TS-ASR. Specifically, we utilize target-speaker embedding as a prompt in TS-VAD and TS-ASR modules in our proposed system. In constrast with previous system, we fully leverage pre-trained models for system initialization, thereby bestowing our approach with heightened generalizability and precision. Experiments on M2MeT2.0 Challenge dataset show that our system achieves a cp-CER of 11.27% on the test set, ranking first in both fixed and open training conditions

    PromptVC: Flexible Stylistic Voice Conversion in Latent Space Driven by Natural Language Prompts

    Style voice conversion aims to transform the style of source speech to a desired style according to real-world application demands. However, the current style voice conversion approach relies on pre-defined labels or reference speech to control the conversion process, which leads to limitations in style diversity or falls short in terms of the intuitive and interpretability of style representation. In this study, we propose PromptVC, a novel style voice conversion approach that employs a latent diffusion model to generate a style vector driven by natural language prompts. Specifically, the style vector is extracted by a style encoder during training, and then the latent diffusion model is trained independently to sample the style vector from noise, with this process being conditioned on natural language prompts. To improve style expressiveness, we leverage HuBERT to extract discrete tokens and replace them with the K-Means center embedding to serve as the linguistic content, which minimizes residual style information. Additionally, we deduplicate the same discrete token and employ a differentiable duration predictor to re-predict the duration of each token, which can adapt the duration of the same linguistic content to different styles.     Chronic medication does not affect hyperactive error responses in obsessive-compulsive disorder

    Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) show an increased error-related negativity (ERN), yet previous studies have not controlled for medication use, which may be important given evidence linking performance monitoring to neurotransmitter systems targeted by treatment, such as serotonin. In an examination of 19 unmedicated OCD patients, 19 medicated OCD patients, 19 medicated patient controls without OCD, and 21 unmedicated healthy controls, we found greater ERNs in OCD patients than in controls, irrespective of medication use. Severity of generalized anxiety and depression was associated with ERN amplitude in controls but not patients. These data confirm previous findings of an exaggerated error response in OCD, further showing that it cannot be attributed to medication. The absence in patients of a relationship between ERN amplitude and anxiety/depression, as was found in controls, suggests that elevated error signals in OCD may be disorder-specific.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/79361/1/j.1469-8986.2010.00988.x.pd

    Gut microbiome: A potential indicator for predicting treatment outcomes in major depressive disorder

    The therapeutic outcomes in major depressive disorder (MDD), one of the most common and heterogeneous mental illnesses, are affected by factors that remain unclear and often yield unsatisfactory results. Herein, we characterized the composition and metabolic function of the gut microbiota of patients with MDD during antidepressant treatment, based on 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomics. The microbial signatures at baseline differed significantly between responder and non-responder groups. The gut microbiota of the non-responder group was mainly characterized by increased relative abundances of the phylum Actinobacteria, families Christensenellaceae and Eggerthellaceae, and genera Adlercreutzia and Christensenellaceae R7 group compared to that of the responder group. Additionally, the gut microbiota composition of the responder and non-responder groups differed significantly before and after treatment, especially at the genus level. Moreover, 20 differential metabolites between the responder and non-responder groups were identified that were mainly involved in lipid metabolism (cholestane steroids and steroid esters). Eggerthellaceae and Adlercreutzia displayed strong co-occurrence relationships with certain metabolites, suggesting alternations in the gut microbiome, and associated metabolites may be potential mediators of successful antidepressant treatment. Overall, our study demonstrates that alterations in gut microbiota composition and metabolic function might be relevant to the response to antidepressants, thereby providing insight into mechanisms responsible for their efficacy

    Relationship between bedtime, nighttime sleep duration, and anxiety symptoms in preschoolers in China

    BackgroundSleep problems in preschoolers are becoming increasingly prominent, and the association between sleep status and anxiety symptoms has attracted growing attention. However, studies investigating the relationship between bedtime and nighttime sleep duration in preschoolers and their anxiety symptoms remain scant. We used the large sample data from the Longhua Cohort Study of Children in Shenzhen, China (LCCS) to analyze the association between bedtime and sleep in preschoolers and their anxiety symptoms.MethodsA cross-sectional study of 69,138 preschoolers in Longhua District, Shenzhen, China was conducted in 2022. Data on sociodemographic characteristics of families, bedtime, nighttime sleep duration of preschoolers, and their anxiety symptoms (measured by the Spence Preschool Children Anxiety Scale) were collected through a structured questionnaire completed by the parents. Using binary logistic regression models, the relationship between bedtime, nighttime sleep duration, and childhood anxiety symptoms was examined.ResultsThe bedtimes of preschoolers were concentrated between 21:01–22:00 (52.41%). Among the preschoolers, 38.70% had bedtimes later than 22:00, and 75.49% had insufficient nighttime sleep duration. The positive screening rate for anxiety symptoms among preschoolers was 3.50%. After adjusting for confounding factors using binary logistic regression models, compared with preschoolers with bedtime ≤21:00, The OR (95%CI) values of anxiety in preschoolers with bedtime ≥23:01, 22:01–23:00 and 21:01–22:00 were 2.86 (2.21–3.69), 1.51 (1.27–1.79) and 1.48 (1.26–1.76), respectively. Compared with those with sufficient nighttime sleep duration, the OR (95%CI) of children with nighttime sleep duration less than 9 h was 1.36 (1.23–1.51).ConclusionAn association exists between bedtime and nighttime sleep duration in preschoolers and their anxiety symptoms. Preschoolers with 21:00 for bedtime and a nighttime sleep duration of 10 h may have lower anxiety symptoms. These findings support the importance of adequate sleep for preventing anxiety symptoms in children

    Differential Gene Expression and Adherence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 In Vitro and in Ligated Pig Intestines

    BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli O157:H7 strain 86-24 grown in MacConkey broth (MB) shows almost no adherence to cultured epithelial cells but adheres well in pig ligated intestines. This study investigated the mechanisms associated with the difference between in-vitro and in-vivo adherence of the MB culture. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: It was found that decreased adherence in vitro by bacteria grown in MB was mainly due to lactose, possibly implicating the involvement of carbon catabolite repression (CCR). Expression of selected virulence-related genes associated with adherence and CCR was then examined by quantitative PCR. When bacteria were grown in MB and Brain Heart Infusion with NaHCO(3) (BHIN) plus lactose, pH was reduced to 5.5-5.9 and there was a significant decrease in expression of the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) genes eae, tir, espD, grlA/R and ler, and an increase in cya (cAMP), and two negative regulators of the LEE, gadE and hfq. Putative virulence genes stcE, hlyA, ent and nleA were also decreased in vitro. Reversal of these changes was noted for bacteria recovered from the intestine, where transcripts for qseF and fis and putative virulence factors AidA(15), TerC and Ent/EspL2 were significantly increased, and transcripts for AIDA(48), Iha, UreC, Efa1A, Efa1B, ToxB, EhxA, StcE, NleA and NleB were expressed at high levels. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Presence of lactose resulted in decreased expression of LEE genes and the failure of EHEC O157:H7 to adhere to epithelial cells in vitro but this repression was overcome in vivo. CCR and/or acidic pH may have played a role in repression of the LEE genes. Bacterial pathogens need to integrate their nutritional metabolism with expression of virulence genes but little is known of how this is done in E. coli O157:H7. This study indicates one aspect of the subject that should be investigated further

    Management of cultural differences under various forms of China–UK higher education strategic alliances

    International strategic alliances are notorious for their high failure rate. Increased inter-partner conflict resulting from ineffective cross-cultural management is perceived to be one of the key reasons for unsatisfactory alliance performance. Driven by globalization, universities are extending into foreign markets through the establishment of various types of strategic alliances (SAs). Through an empirical investigation, this study reveals that although cultural differences (CDs) exist in China–UK higher education (HE) SAs their impact depends on the structure of the SA. Although cultural conflicts occur more frequently in equity joint ventures than in non-equity modes, the impact of conflict arising from CDs is more serious and significant in non-equity arrangements. Moreover, partners perceive CDs as sources of mutual interest. The findings imply that the negative impact of CDs can be ameliorated to varying degrees depending on the type of China–UK HE SA
