    Vision Backbone Enhancement via Multi-Stage Cross-Scale Attention

    Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViTs) have achieved remarkable success in various vision tasks. However, many architectures do not consider interactions between feature maps from different stages and scales, which may limit their performance. In this work, we propose a simple add-on attention module to overcome these limitations via multi-stage and cross-scale interactions. Specifically, the proposed Multi-Stage Cross-Scale Attention (MSCSA) module takes feature maps from different stages to enable multi-stage interactions and achieves cross-scale interactions by computing self-attention at different scales based on the multi-stage feature maps. Our experiments on several downstream tasks show that MSCSA provides a significant performance boost with modest additional FLOPs and runtime

    Next generation sequencing as a new detection strategy for maternal cell contamination in clinical prenatal samples

    Objectives: The maternal cell contamination in chorionic villus or amniotic fluid presents a serious preanalytical risk for prenatal misdiagnosis. The following study presents and validates a novel process for identifying MCC by detecting short tandem repeat markers on Ion Proton system. Initially, MCC testing was performed during the detection of chromosomal abnormalities so as to improve the detection efficiency and accuracy of this method. Material and methods: More than 70 STR loci were selected to establish the detection progress. Capillary electrophoresis was used to compare the next generation sequencing detection results, as well as to identify the optimal STR on Ion Proton system. Evaluation criteria for maternal cell contamination were set, and the automated data analysis was performed. The detection sensitivity was validated via 4 groups with mixed samples and different proportions. Results: Consequently, twenty-three clinical samples were tested to evaluate the detection accuracy. In addition, 14 reli­able STR loci, which were stably detected in more than 25 samples, were found. The detection sensitivity in maternal cell contamination was no less than 20%, while its accuracy reached 100% in clinical samples. Conclusions: Finally, we established and validated a novel detection procedure for maternal cell contamination in clinical prenatal samples using next generation sequencing. This procedure allowed us to simultaneously perform prenatal test­ing and MCC testing. Unlike the traditional capillary electrophoresis, this method is rapid, highly sensitive, and suitable for wide range of clinical applications

    Automatic summarization of rushes video using bipartite graphs

    In this paper we present a new approach for automatic summarization of rushes, or unstructured video. Our approach is composed of three major steps. First, based on shot and sub-shot segmentations, we filter sub-shots with low information content not likely to be useful in a summary. Second, a method using maximal matching in a bipartite graph is adapted to measure similarity between the remaining shots and to minimize inter-shot redundancy by removing repetitive retake shots common in rushes video. Finally, the presence of faces and motion intensity are characterised in each sub-shot. A measure of how representative the sub-shot is in the context of the overall video is then proposed. Video summaries composed of keyframe slideshows are then generated. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach we re-run the evaluation carried out by TRECVid, using the same dataset and evaluation metrics used in the TRECVid video summarization task in 2007 but with our own assessors. Results show that our approach leads to a significant improvement on our own work in terms of the fraction of the TRECVid summary ground truth included and is competitive with the best of other approaches in TRECVid 2007

    Design strategies of tumor-targeted delivery systems based on 2D nanomaterials

    Conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy are nonselective and nonspecific for cell killing, causing serious side effects and threatening the lives of patients. It is of great significance to develop more accurate tumor-targeting therapeutic strategies. Nanotechnology is in a leading position to provide new treatment options for cancer, and it has great potential for selective targeted therapy and controlled drug release. 2D nanomaterials (2D NMs) have broad application prospects in the field of tumor-targeted delivery systems due to their special structure-based functions and excellent optical, electrical, and thermal properties.     Cardiovascular disease risk models and dementia or cognitive decline: a systematic review

    BackgroundHealth cognitive promotion and protection is a critical topic. With the world’s aging population and rising life expectancy, there will be many people living with highly age-related dementia illnesses. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and dementia share the same risk factors, such as unhealthy lifestyles and metabolic factors. These recognized risks associated with CVD and dementia frequently co-occur. CVD risk models may have a close association with dementia and cognitive decline. So, this systematic review aimed to determine whether CVD risk models were connected with dementia or cognitive decline and compare the predictive ability of various models.MethodsPubMed, Web of Science, PsychINFO, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Sinomed, and WanFang were searched from 1 January 2014 until 16 February 2023. Only CVD risk models were included. We used the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) for the quality assessment of included cohort studies and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for cross-sectional studies. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement’s guidelines were followed in this systematic study.ResultsIn all, 9,718 references were screened, of which 22 articles were included. A total of 15 CVD risk models were summarized. Except for the Cardiovascular Health in Ambulatory Care Research Team (CANHEART) health index, the other 14 CVD risk models were associated with dementia and cognitive decline. In comparison, different CVD risk models and domain-specific cognitive function correlation variation depended on cohort characteristics, risk models, cognitive function tests, and study designs. Moreover, it needed to be clarified when comparing the predicting performance of different CVD risk models.ConclusionIt is significant for public health to improve disease risk prediction and prevention and mitigate the potential adverse effects of the heart on the brain. More cohort studies are warranted to prove the correlation between CVD risk models and cognitive function. Moreover, further studies are encouraged to compare the efficacy of CVD risk models in predicting cognitive disorders

    Infection with blast fungus ( Magnaporthe orzyae) leads to increased expression of an arabinogalactan-protein epitope in both susceptible and resistant rice cultivars

    Blast fungus (Magnaporthe orzyae) is the most serious pathogen of rice. As such, the objective of the current study was to investigate the infection process using a selected panel of anti-plant extracellular matrix antibodies, in infected leaves from three rice cultivars that display varying degrees of resistance to the pathogen; at selected time points post inoculation. An arabinogalactan-protein (AGP) epitope, recognized by the antibody JIM13, was shown to be temporally and spatially regulated during the infection, in all three cultivars. Prior to inoculation, expression of the epitope was confined to the epidermis, sclerenchyma, phloem, xylem and bundle sheath. As the infection progressed, the intensity of labeling increased in all the aforementioned cell types and spread to the mesophyll. Immunogold transmission electron microscopy, revealed this epitope to be most abundant at the plasma membrane. These data suggest that this epitope is borne on a plasma-membrane-associated AGP, which may act as a pattern recognition receptor (PRR), involved in the basal immune response to infection with blast fungus, in both resistant and susceptible rice cultivars. As such, this study represents the first report of a membrane – associated arabinogalactan-protein in rice, which once cloned, could be of utility in future breeding programs/genetic modification to improve the basal immune response to blast fungus and other pathogens, in this globally important food crop

    SDSS J013127.34-032100.1: A newly discovered radio-loud quasar at z=5.18z=5.18 with extremely high luminosity

    Only very few z>5 quasars discovered to date are radio-loud, with a radio-to-optical flux ratio (radio-loudness parameter) higher than 10. Here we report the discovery of an optically luminous radio-loud quasar, SDSS J013127.34-032100.1 (J0131-0321 in short), at z=5.18+-0.01 using the Lijiang 2.4m and Magellan telescopes. J0131-0321 has a spectral energy distribution consistent with that of radio-loud quasars. With an i-band magnitude of 18.47 and radio flux density of 33 mJy, its radio-loudness parameter is ~100. The optical and near-infrared spectra taken by Magellan enable us to estimate its bolometric luminosity to be L_bol ~ 1.1E48 erg/s, approximately 4.5 times greater than that of the most distant quasar known to date. The black hole mass of J0131-0321 is estimated to be 2.7E9 solar masses, with an uncertainty up to 0.4 dex. Detailed physical properties of this high-redshift, radio-loud, potentially super-Eddington quasar can be probed in the future with more dedicated and intensive follow-up observations using multi-wavelength facilities.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJ

    A School-Based Study of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Medical Students in Beijing, China: Prevalence and Some Related Factors

    Purpose. To investigate the prevalence and some related factors about irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in medical students. Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out from February 2014 to Jun 2014 in Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Beijing, China. All participants were asked to completed self-administered questionnaires. Results. Seven hundred and sixty-seven medical students (23.26±2.88 years, 25.6% males) completed the survey. The prevalence of IBS was 33.3%, with a high prevalence in women (36.1%). Among the IBS patients, 112 cases were IBS-M (43.9%) and 77.6% had moderately severe IBS. There were no statistical differences between control group and IBS patients in anxiety and depression scores (P>0.05). The total score of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was significantly higher for medical students with IBS and 35.5% of IBS patients had severe sleep disorder; the scores of child trauma questionnaire (CTQ) and student-life stress inventory (SLSI) were also higher in IBS patients. Sex and sleep disorder were independently associated with IBS (OR, 1.914, 95%CI, 1.281–2.860; OR, 1.143, 95%CI, 1.074–1.216). Conclusion. Our study has many valuable findings and they may provide valuable suggestions for the necessary intervention and treatment measures towards medical students

    Moringa oleifera leaf ethanolic extract benefits cashmere goat semen quality via improving rumen microbiota and metabolome

    BackgroundArtificial insemination (AI) is an effective reproductive technique to improve the performance of cashmere goats and prevent the spread of diseases, and the quality of the semen determines the success of AI. The potential of Moringa oleifera leaf powder (MOLP) and Moringa oleifera leaf ethanolic extract (MOLE) to improve semen quality has been reported, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. For the purpose, 18 mature male cashmere goats were randomly assigned into three groups: the control (CON), MOLP, and MOLE groups. The CON group received distilled water orally; the MOLP group was orally treated with 200 mg/kg body weight (BW) MOLP; and the MOLE group was orally treated with 40 mg/kg BW MOLE.ResultsResults showed that MOLE contained long-chain fatty acids and flavonoids. Treatment with MOLP and MOLE increased the activities of the serum catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase (P < 0.05), enhanced the total antioxidant capacity (P < 0.05), and reduced the serum malondialdehyde level (P < 0.05). At the same time, MOLE increased the contents of serum gonadotropin releasing hormone and testosterone (P < 0.05). Moreover, MOLE significantly increased sperm concentration, motility, and viability (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, MOLE raised the Chao1 index (P < 0.05) and altered the composition of the rumen microbiota; it also raised the relative abundance of Treponema (P < 0.05) and Fibrobacter (P < 0.05) and reduced the relative abundance of Prevotella (P < 0.1). Correlation analysis revealed the genus Prevotella was significantly negatively correlated with sperm concentration, as well as sperm motility and viability. Furthermore, MOLE significantly increased the rumen levels of the steroid hormones testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (P < 0.05), as well as the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) alpha-Linolenic acid, gamma-Linolenic acid, docosapentaenoic acid, and 9-S-Hydroperoxylinoleicacid (P < 0.05).ConclusionsOral MOLE supplementation can improve semen quality by increasing the antioxidant capacity and altering the rumen microbiota and metabolites of cashmere goats. Moreover, the MOLP supplementation could enhance the antioxidant capacity of cashmere goats
