    Oncocytoma is a neoplasm consisting of oncocytes that is found in the salivary gland, kidney, and thyroid. Adrenocortical oncocytoma is particularly uncommon, and most cases reported are benign and nonfunctioning.     First Demonstration of Ultra-Thin SiGe-Channel Junctionless Accumulation-Mode (JAM) Bulk FinFETs on Si Substrate with PN Junction-Isolation Scheme

    A SiGe-channel junctionless-accumulation-mode (JAM) PMOS bulk FinFETs were successfully demonstrated on Si substrate with PN junction-isolation scheme for the first time. The JAM bulk FinFETs with fin width of 18 nm exhibits excellent subthreshold characteristics such as subthreshold swing of 64 mV/decade, drain-induced barrier lowering (DIBL) of 40 mV/V and high Ion/Ioff current ratio ( \u3e 1 x 105). The change of substrate bias from 0 to 5 V leads to the threshold voltage shift of 53 mV by modulating the effective channel thickness. When compared to the Si-channel bulk FinFETs with fin width of 18 nm, Si and SiGe channel devices exhibits comparable subthreshold swing and DIBL. For devices with longer fin width, SiGe channel devices exhibits much lower DIBL, indicating superior top-gate controllability and robustness to substrate bias compared to the Si channel devices. A zero temperature coefficient point was observed in the transfer curves as temperature increases from -120 to 120ยฐC, confirming that mobility degradation is dominantly affected by phonon scattering mechanism

    OASIS: Online Application for the Survival Analysis of Lifespan Assays Performed in Aging Research

    Aging is a fundamental biological process. Characterization of genetic and environmental factors that influence lifespan is a crucial step toward understanding the mechanisms of aging at the organism level. To capture the different effects of genetic and environmental factors on lifespan, appropriate statistical analyses are needed.We developed an online application for survival analysis (OASIS) that helps conduct various novel statistical tasks involved in analyzing survival data in a user-friendly manner. OASIS provides standard survival analysis results including Kaplan-Meier estimates and mean/median survival time by taking censored survival data. OASIS also provides various statistical tests including comparison of mean survival time, overall survival curve, and survival rate at specific time point. To visualize survival data, OASIS generates survival and log cumulative hazard plots that enable researchers to easily interpret their experimental results. Furthermore, we provide statistical methods that can analyze variances among survival datasets. In addition, users can analyze proportional effects of risk factors on survival.OASIS provides a platform that is essential to facilitate efficient statistical analyses of survival data in the field of aging research.     Multiphasic analysis of whole exome sequencing data identifies a novel mutation of ACTG1 in a nonsyndromic hearing loss family

    BACKGROUND: The genetic heterogeneity of sensorineural hearing loss is a major hurdle to the efficient discovery of disease-causing genes. We designed a multiphasic analysis of copy number variation (CNV), linkage, and single nucleotide variation (SNV) of whole exome sequencing (WES) data for the efficient discovery of mutations causing nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL). RESULTS: From WES data, we identified five distinct CNV loci from a NSHL family, but they were not co-segregated among patients. Linkage analysis based on SNVs identified six candidate loci (logarithm of odds [LOD] >1.5). We selected 15 SNVs that co-segregated with NSHL in the family, which were located in six linkage candidate loci. Finally, the novel variant p.M305T in ACTG1 (DFNA20/26) was selected as a disease-causing variant. CONCLUSIONS: Here, we present a multiphasic CNV, linkage, and SNV analysis of WES data for the identification of a candidate mutation causing NSHL. Our stepwise, multiphasic approach enabled us to expedite the discovery of disease-causing variants from a large number of patient variants

    Toward Green Synthesis of Graphene Oxide Using Recycled Sulfuric Acid via Couette-Taylor Flow

    Developing eco-friendly and cost-effective processes for the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) is essential for its widespread industrial applications. In this work, we propose a green synthesis technique for GO production using recycled sulfuric acid and filter-processed oxidized natural graphite obtained from a Couette-Taylor flow reactor. The viscosity of reactant mixtures processed from Couette-Taylor flow was considerably lower (???200 cP at 25 ??C) than that of those from Hummers' method, which enabled the simple filtration process. The filtered sulfuric acid can be recycled and reused for the repetitive GO synthesis with negligible differences in the as-synthesized GO qualities. This removal of sulfuric acid has great potential in lowering the overall GO production cost as the amount of water required during the fabrication process, which takes a great portion of the total production cost, can be dramatically reduced after such acid filtration. The proposed eco-friendly GO fabrication process is expected to promote the commercial application of graphene materials into industry shortly
