    In the crystal structure of the polymeric title compound, (C2H8N)[Eu(C2O4)2(H2O)]·3H2O, the independent oxalate that lies on a general position chelates to two Eu atoms, as do the other two oxalates that lie on different centres of inversion, the bridging mode of the oxalates giving rise to a three-dimensional anionic network. The water-coordinated Eu atom exists in a tricapped trigonal–prismatic geometry. The cations and solvent water mol­ecules occupy the cavities of the network and are involved in hydrogen bonding with each other and with the network.published_or_final_versio

    End-to-End Learning of Video Super-Resolution with Motion Compensation

    Learning approaches have shown great success in the task of super-resolving an image given a low resolution input. Video super-resolution aims for exploiting additionally the information from multiple images. Typically, the images are related via optical flow and consecutive image warping. In this paper, we provide an end-to-end video super-resolution network that, in contrast to previous works, includes the estimation of optical flow in the overall network architecture. We analyze the usage of optical flow for video super-resolution and find that common off-the-shelf image warping does not allow video super-resolution to benefit much from optical flow. We rather propose an operation for motion compensation that performs warping from low to high resolution directly. We show that with this network configuration, video super-resolution can benefit from optical flow and we obtain state-of-the-art results on the popular test sets. We also show that the processing of whole images rather than independent patches is responsible for a large increase in accuracy.Comment: Accepted to GCPR201

    The Effects of MALL on L2 Pronunciation Learning: A Meta-Analysis

    Mobile-assisted language learning has emerged as a valuable tool for L2 pronunciation learning as it offers ample opportunities for learners to perform authentic learning activities anytime and anywhere. However, the extent to which mobile devices may facilitate or enhance L2 pronunciation has yet to be systematically investigated. To address the research gap, the study drew on a meta-analytic framework to examine the overall average effect of mobile devices on L2 pronunciation learning. The meta-analysis consisted of 13 primary studies featured in an experimental vs. control group design published between 2009 and 2020. These studies involved 655 participants and reported 19 effect sizes in the results. The analysis revealed a robust effect size (d =.66) as captured by a random-effects model, indicating a significant effect concerning the use of mobile devices on L2 pronunciation learning. In the meta-analysis, significant moderators were also identified, and their moderating effects were critically examined. In light of the research findings, it is argued that innovative activities and tasks using mobile devices can be adopted for both language instructors and learners due to their portability, connectivity, and individuality

    Advancement of the annual traffic census in Hong Kong

    This paper summarises the process, findings and recommendations of a recently completed joint university consultancy project that reviewed the annual traffic census (ATC) in Hong Kong. The results of a survey that assessed the usefulness of the census report are presented, together with an overview of the existing traffic data collection process and traffic detection equipment. Areas for improvement are then identified, including the sampling strategies for the collection of vehicle classification and occupancy data, the procedure for the development of group scaling factors, the method for the selection of core and coverage stations, the approaches to developing growth factors and traffic flow estimation, the presentation method and database structure of the census framework, and the manpower requirements. Based on these identified areas, a new computer program is developed to integrate all of the tasks of the census report and to produce the results in CD-ROM format. Finally, concluding remarks are given together with recommendations for further study.published_or_final_versio

    Dielectric and thermal relaxation in the energy landscape

    We derive an energy landscape interpretation of dielectric relaxation times in undercooled liquids, comparing it to the traditional Debye and Gemant-DiMarzio-Bishop pictures. The interaction between different local structural rearrangements in the energy landscape explains qualitatively the recently observed splitting of the flow process into an initial and a final stage. The initial mechanical relaxation stage is attributed to hopping processes, the final thermal or structural relaxation stage to the decay of the local double-well potentials. The energy landscape concept provides an explanation for the equality of thermal and dielectric relaxation times.
