The Radiated Energy Budget of Chromospheric Plasma in a Major Solar Flare Deduced From Multi-Wavelength Observations
This paper presents measurements of the energy radiated by the lower solar
atmosphere, at optical, UV, and EUV wavelengths, during an X-class solar flare
(SOL2011-02-15T01:56) in response to an injection of energy assumed to be in
the form of nonthermal electrons. Hard X-ray observations from RHESSI were used
to track the evolution of the parameters of the nonthermal electron
distribution to reveal the total power contained in flare accelerated
electrons. By integrating over the duration of the impulsive phase, the total
energy contained in the nonthermal electrons was found to be
erg. The response of the lower solar atmosphere was measured in the free-bound
EUV continua of H I (Lyman), He I, and He II, plus the emission lines of He II
at 304\AA\ and H I (Ly) at 1216\AA\ by SDO/EVE, the UV continua at
1600\AA\ and 1700\AA\ by SDO/AIA, and the WL continuum at 4504\AA, 5550\AA, and
6684\AA, along with the Ca II H line at 3968\AA\ using Hinode/SOT. The summed
energy detected by these instruments amounted to erg;
about 15% of the total nonthermal energy. The Ly line was found to
dominate the measured radiative losses. Parameters of both the driving electron
distribution and the resulting chromospheric response are presented in detail
to encourage the numerical modelling of flare heating for this event, to
determine the depth of the solar atmosphere at which these line and continuum

To Learn or Not to Learn Features for Deformable Registration?
Feature-based registration has been popular with a variety of features
ranging from voxel intensity to Self-Similarity Context (SSC). In this paper,
we examine the question on how features learnt using various Deep Learning (DL)
frameworks can be used for deformable registration and whether this feature
learning is necessary or not. We investigate the use of features learned by
different DL methods in the current state-of-the-art discrete registration
framework and analyze its performance on 2 publicly available datasets. We draw
insights into the type of DL framework useful for feature learning and the
impact, if any, of the complexity of different DL models and brain parcellation
methods on the performance of discrete registration. Our results indicate that
the registration performance with DL features and SSC are comparable and stable
across datasets whereas this does not hold for low level features.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Testing the theory of immune selection in cancers that break the rules of transplantation
Modification of cancer cells likely to reduce their immunogenicity, including loss or down-regulation of MHC molecules, is now well documented and has become the main support for the concept of immune surveillance. The evidence that these modifications, in fact, result from selection by the immune system is less clear, since the possibility that they may result from reorganized metabolism associated with proliferation or from cell de-differentiation remains. Here, we (a) survey old and new transplantation experiments that test the possibility of selection and (b) survey how transmissible tumours of dogs and Tasmanian devils provide naturally evolved tests of immune surveillance
Form Factors in N=4 Super Yang-Mills and Periodic Wilson Loops
We calculate form factors of half-BPS operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills
theory at tree level and one loop using novel applications of recursion
relations and unitarity. In particular, we determine the expression of the
one-loop form factors with two scalars and an arbitrary number of
positive-helicity gluons. These quantities resemble closely the MHV scattering
amplitudes, including holomorphicity of the tree-level form factor, and the
expansion in terms of two-mass easy box functions of the one-loop result. Next,
we compare our result for these form factors to the calculation of a particular
periodic Wilson loop at one loop, finding agreement. This suggests a novel

Collaborative Gaze Channelling for Improved Cooperation During Robotic Assisted Surgery
The use of multiple robots for performing complex tasks is becoming a common practice for many robot applications. When different operators are involved, effective cooperation with anticipated manoeuvres is important for seamless, synergistic control of all the end-effectors. In this paper, the concept of Collaborative Gaze Channelling (CGC) is presented for improved control of surgical robots for a shared task. Through eye tracking, the fixations of each operator are monitored and presented in a shared surgical workspace. CGC permits remote or physically separated collaborators to share their intention by visualising the eye gaze of their counterparts, and thus recovers, to a certain extent, the information of mutual intent that we rely upon in a vis-à-vis working setting. In this study, the efficiency of surgical manipulation with and without CGC for controlling a pair of bimanual surgical robots is evaluated by analysing the level of coordination of two independent operators. Fitts' law is used to compare the quality of movement with or without CGC. A total of 40 subjects have been recruited for this study and the results show that the proposed CGC framework exhibits significant improvement (p<0.05) on all the motion indices used for quality assessment. This study demonstrates that visual guidance is an implicit yet effective way of communication during collaborative tasks for robotic surgery. Form factors at strong coupling via a Y-system
We compute form factors in planar N=4 Super Yang-Mills at strong coupling.
Namely we consider the overlap between an operator insertion and 2n gluons.
Through the gauge/string duality these are given by minimal surfaces in AdS
space. The surfaces end on an infinite periodic sequence of null segments at
the boundary of AdS. We consider surfaces that can be embedded in AdS_3. We
derive set of functional equations for the cross ratios as functions of the
spectral parameter. These equations are of the form of a Y-system. The integral
form of the Y-system has Thermodynamics Bethe Ansatz form. The area is given by
the free energy of the TBA system or critical value of Yang-Yang functional. We
consider a restricted set of operators which have small conformal dimension
Barley plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIP aquaporins) as water and CO2 transporters
We identified barley aquaporins and demonstrated that one, HvPIP2;1, transports water and CO2. Regarding water homeostasis in plants, regulations of aquaporin expression were observed in many plants under several environmental stresses. Under salt stress, a number of plasma membrane-type aquaporins were down-regulated, which can prevent continuous dehydration resulting in cell death. The leaves of transgenic rice plants that expressed the largest amount of HvPIP2;1 showed a 40% increase in internal CO2 conductance compared with leaves of wild-type rice plants. The rate of CO2 assimilation also increased in the transgenic plants. The goal of our plant aquaporin research is to determine the key aquaporin species responsible for water and CO2 transport, and to improve plant water relations, stress tolerance, CO2 uptake or assimilation, and plant productivity via molecular breeding of aquaporins.</p
Resummation of heavy jet mass and comparison to LEP data
The heavy jet mass distribution in e+e- collisions is computed to
next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNNLL) and next-to-next-to leading
fixed order accuracy (NNLO). The singular terms predicted from the resummed
distribution are confirmed by the fixed order distributions allowing a precise
extraction of the unknown soft function coefficients. A number of quantitative
and qualitative comparisons of heavy jet mass and the related thrust
distribution are made. From fitting to ALEPH data, a value of alpha_s is
extracted, alpha_s(m_Z)=0.1220 +/- 0.0031, which is larger than, but not in
conflict with, the corresponding value for thrust. A weighted average of the
two produces alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1193 +/- 0.0027, consistent with the world
average. A study of the non-perturbative corrections shows that the flat
direction observed for thrust between alpha_s and a simple non-perturbative
shape parameter is not lifted in combining with heavy jet mass. The Monte Carlo
treatment of hadronization gives qualitatively different results for thrust and
heavy jet mass, and we conclude that it cannot be trusted to add power
corrections to the event shape distributions at this accuracy. Whether a more
sophisticated effective field theory approach to power corrections can
reconcile the thrust and heavy jet mass distributions remains an open question.Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures. v2 added effect of lower numerical cutoff with

The 'At-risk mental state' for psychosis in adolescents : clinical presentation, transition and remission.
Despite increased efforts over the last decade to prospectively identify individuals at ultra-high risk of developing a psychotic illness, limited attention has been specifically directed towards adolescent populations (<18 years). In order to evaluate how those under 18 fulfilling the operationalised criteria for an At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) present and fare over time, we conducted an observational study. Participants (N = 30) generally reported a high degree of functional disability and frequent and distressing perceptual disturbance, mainly in the form of auditory hallucinations. Seventy percent (21/30) were found to fulfil the criteria for a co-morbid ICD-10 listed mental health disorder, with mood (affective; 13/30) disorders being most prevalent. Overall transition rates to psychosis were low at 24 months follow-up (2/28; 7.1 %) whilst many participants demonstrated a significant reduction in psychotic-like symptoms. The generalisation of these findings may be limited due to the small sample size and require replication in a larger sample
Set optimization - a rather short introduction
Recent developments in set optimization are surveyed and extended including
various set relations as well as fundamental constructions of a convex analysis
for set- and vector-valued functions, and duality for set optimization
problems. Extensive sections with bibliographical comments summarize the state
of the art. Applications to vector optimization and financial risk measures are
