A Discussion of Bilateral Rearing Based on The Institutions for Reproduction

    Get PDF
As mentioned in the book The Institutions for Reproduction (Shengyu Zhidu in Chinese) written by Fei Xiaotong, physiologic rearing is unilateral (i.e., physiologic rearing is fully conducted by the mother) while social rearing is bilateral (i.e., both parents foster their child jointly). Because parents have different divisions of labor in life, they may have different levels of influence on the perception, personality, mind, character, and other aspects of their child. The absence of any parent in rearing may leave regrets for the child’s childhood. Nowadays, some typical phenomena are destroying the completeness of the bilateral rearing structure. For instance: Owing to the high divorce rate, many children have to live with one parent; with the heavy pressure of life, one parent or both parents work away from home constantly, while leaving the child at home; some parents even entrust the task of looking after children to a babysitter or child-care center. These social facts are inevitable, but it is quite necessary to try to create a good, healthy, and complete bilateral rearing growth space with mental interaction for children

A slight increase in melanoma risk was observed among sodium‐glucose co‐transporter‐2 (SGLT‐2) inhibitor users in the regular reports. However, the association remains uncertain. To address this issue, we performed a systematic search of electronic databases up to May 2, 2018 and a meta‐analysis of 21 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 20 308 patients. We did not find a significant increase in risk of melanoma among SGLT‐2 inhibitor users (Peto odds ratio [OR], 2.17; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.80‐5.89; I2, 0%). Similar results were observed in the subgroup analyses according to the type of SGLT‐2 inhibitor, type of control, ages of patients, race/ethnicity, and trial durations. For non‐melanoma skin cancer risk, no significant difference was observed when all trials were combined (Peto OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.47‐1.07; I2, 0%), while a significantly decreased risk was observed among trials with duration <52 weeks (Peto OR, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.02‐0.59; I2, 0%). No evidence of publication bias was detected in the analyses. Current evidence from RCTs did not support a significantly increased risk of skin cancer associated with SGLT‐2 inhibitors

Triple gauge boson production at the LHC can be used to test the robustness of the Standard Model and provide useful information for VBF di-boson scattering measurement. Especially, any derivations from SM prediction will indicate possible new physics. In this paper we present a detailed Monte Carlo study on measuring WWW production in pure leptonic and semileptonic decays, and probing anomalous quartic gauge WWWW couplings at the CERN LHC and future hadron collider, with parton shower and detector simulation effects taken into account. Apart from cut-based method, multivariate boosted decision tree method has been exploited for possible improvement. For the leptonic decay channel, our results show that at the sqrt{s}=8(14)[100] TeV pp collider with integrated luminosity of 20(100)[3000] fb-1, one can reach a significance of 0.4(1.2)[10]sigma to observe the SM WWW production. For the semileptonic decay channel, one can have 0.5(2)[14]sigma to observe the SM WWW production. We also give constraints on relevant Dim-8 anomalous WWWW coupling parameters.Comment: Accepted version by JHE

BACKGROUND: Chronic lumbar zygapophysial joint pain is a common cause of chronic low back pain. Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is one of the effective management options; however, the results from the traditional RFA need to be improved in certain cases. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of percutaneous radiofrequency ablation under endoscopic guidance (ERFA) for chronic low back pain secondary to facet joint arthritis. METHODS: This is a prospective study enrolled 60 patients. The cases were randomized into two groups: 30 patients in the control group underwent traditional percutaneous radiofrequency ablation, others underwent ERFA. The lumbar visual analog scale (VAS), MacNab score, and postoperative complications were used to evaluate the outcomes. All outcome assessments were performed at postoperative 1 day, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. RESULTS: There was no difference between the two groups in preoperative VAS (P \u3e 0.05). VAS scores, except the postoperative first day, in all other postoperative time points were significantly lower than preoperative values each in both groups (P \u3c 0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in VAS at 1 day, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery (P \u3e 0.05). However, the EFRA demonstrated significant benefits at the time points of 3 months and 6 months (P \u3e 0.05). The MacNab scores of 1-year follow-up in the ERFA group were higher than that in the control group (P \u3c 0.05). The incidence of complications in the ERFA group was significantly less than that in the control group (P \u3c 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: ERFA may achieve more accurate and definite denervation on the nerves, which leads to longer lasting pain relief

Statin use and non-melanoma skin cancer risk: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and observational studies

Background Existing evidence of the association between statin use and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) risk has been inconsistent. Objective To maximize statistical power to synthesize prospective evidence on this relationship. Materials and Methods PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrial.gov were systematically searched up to December 11, 2016. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to calculate summary estimates. Results Our meta-analysis of 14 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including 63,157 subjects showed no significant association between statin use and NMSC risk (RR = 1.09, 95%CI = 0.85–1.39). However, meta-analysis of four observational studies including 1,528,215 participants showed significantly increased risk of NMSC among statin users compared to non-users (RR = 1.11, 95%CI = 1.02–1.22). Furthermore, ever using lipophilic statins (RR = 1.14, 95%CI = 1.04–1.24) or lower-potency statins (RR = 1.14, 95%CI = 1.03–1.26), as well as usage of any statin longer than one year (RR = 1.14, 95%CI = 1.09–1.18) were significantly associated with increased NMSC risk based on observational studies. Conclusions Evidence from observational studies supported an association between statin use and increased NMSC risk. This finding should be interpreted with caution due to modest number of included studies, possible between-study heterogeneity and inherent limitations of observational studies

Bone cements for percutaneous vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty: Current status and future developments

    Get PDF
SummaryOsteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) have gradually evolved into a serious health care problem globally. In order to reduce the morbidity of OVCF patients and improve their life quality, two minimally invasive surgery procedures, vertebroplasty (VP) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP), have been developed. Both VP and BKP require the injection of bone cement into the vertebrae of patients to stabilize fractured vertebra. As such, bone cement as the filling material plays an essential role in the effectiveness of these treatments. In this review article, we summarize the bone cements that are currently available in the market and those still under development. Two major categories of bone cements, nondegradable acrylic bone cements (ABCs) and degradable calcium phosphate cements (CPCs), are introduced in detail. We also provide our perspectives on the future development of bone cements for VP and BKP

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of prospectively collected data. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Vertebral artery injuries (VAI) occur commonly after cervical spine trauma. No study has yet examined the association between VAI and specific variants of C2 fractures. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of VAI (as defined by magnetic resonance imaging/angiography [MRI/A]) in subtypes of C2 fractures. To define the association between the incidence, morphology, and severity of C2 fractures, based on fracture angulation and comminution, and the occurrence of VAI. METHODS: Patients admitted to the hospital with C2 fractures between October 2006 and December 2008 to a tertiary care referral center were identified through a prospectively maintained database. Computed tomography (CT) and MRI/A studies were individually reviewed to evaluate the specific C2 fracture type and the occurrence of VAI. Fracture displacement and angulation were measured. Incidence of VAI was compared between different types and subtypes of C2 fractures. The effects of displacement and angulation of the fracture, morphology of foramen transversarium fracture, patient age, and patient gender on VAI were also analyzed. RESULTS: One hundred one patients were identified with C2 fractures that met inclusion criteria, and 18 (17.8%) had VAI by MRI/A. There was no correlation between fracture types and VAI. However, in subtype analysis, there was a correlation of VAI with traumatic spondylolisthesis of axis (TSA) and greater degree of angulation (P = 0.0023), communition fracture (P = 0.0341), and presence of bone fragment(s) within the foramen transversarium (P = 0.0075). Multivariate logistic regression indicated that age, gender and the presence of fragments within foramen transversarium were associated with greater risk of VAI. CONCLUSION: Vertebral artery injuries are more likely to occur in C2 fractures with comminuted fractures involving the foramen transversarium, with fractures manifesting bony fragment(s) within the foramen transversarium, or with fractures having greater angulation. These risk factors should be considered when a patient presents with isolated axis fracture
