A parity-breaking electronic nematic phase transition in the spin-orbit coupled metal CdReO
Strong electron interactions can drive metallic systems toward a variety of
well-known symmetry-broken phases, but the instabilities of correlated metals
with strong spin-orbit coupling have only recently begun to be explored. We
uncovered a multipolar nematic phase of matter in the metallic pyrochlore
CdReO using spatially resolved second-harmonic optical anisotropy
measurements. Like previously discovered electronic nematic phases, this
multipolar phase spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry while preserving
translational invariance. However, it has the distinguishing property of being
odd under spatial inversion, which is allowed only in the presence of
spin-orbit coupling. By examining the critical behavior of the multipolar
nematic order parameter, we show that it drives the thermal phase transition
near 200 kelvin in CdReO and induces a parity-breaking lattice
distortion as a secondary order.Comment: 9 pages main text, 4 figures, 10 pages supplementary informatio
Geochemistry and petrogenesis of volcanic rocks from Daimao Seamount (South China Sea) and their tectonic implications
The South China Sea (SCS) experienced three episodes of seafloor spreading and left three fossil spreading centers presently located at 18°N, 17°N and 15.5°N. Spreading ceased at these three locations during magnetic anomaly 10, 8, and 5c, respectively. Daimao Seamount (16.6. Ma) was formed 10. my after the cessation of the 17°N spreading center. Volcaniclastic rocks and shallow-water carbonate facies near the summit of Daimao Seamount provide key information on the seamount's geologic history. New major and trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions of basaltic breccia clasts in the volcaniclastics suggest that Daimao and other SCS seamounts have typical ocean island basalt-like composition and possess a 'Dupal' isotopic signature. Our new analyses, combined with available data, indicate that the basaltic foundation of Daimao Seamount was formed through subaqueous explosive volcanic eruptions at 16.6. Ma. The seamount subsided rapidly (>. 0.12. mm/y) at first, allowing the deposition of shallow-water, coral-bearing carbonates around its summit and, then, at a slower rate (<. 0.12. mm/y). We propose that the parental magmas of SCS seamount lavas originated from the Hainan mantle plume. In contrast, lavas from contemporaneous seamounts in other marginal basins in the western Pacific are subduction-related

A zonal hybrid approach coupling FNPT with OpenFOAM for modelling wave-structure interactions with action of current
This paper presents a hybrid numerical approach, which combines a two-phase Navier- Stokes model (NS) and the fully nonlinear potential theory (FNPT), for modelling wave-structure interaction. The former governs the computational domain near the structure, where the viscous and turbulent effects are significant, and is solved by OpenFOAM/InterDyMFoam which utilising the finite volume method (FVM) with a Volume of Fluid (VOF) for the phase identification. The latter covers the rest of the domain, where the fluid may be considered as incompressible, inviscid and irrotational, and solved by using the Quasi Arbitrary Lagrangian- Eulerian finite element method (QALE-FEM). These two models are weakly coupled using a zonal (spatially hierarchical) approach. Considering the inconsistence of the solutions at the boundaries between two different sub-domains governed by two fundamentally different models, a relaxation (transitional) zone is introduced, where the velocity, pressure and surface elevations are taken as the weighted summation of the solutions by two models. In order to tackle the challenges associated and maximise the computational efficiency, further developments of the QALE-FEM have been made. These include the derivation of an arbitrary Lagrangian- Eulerian FNPT and application of a robust gradient calculation scheme for estimating the velocity. The present hybrid model is applied to the numerical simulation of a fixed horizontal cylinder subjected to a unidirectional wave with or without following current. The convergence property, the optimisation of the relaxation zone, the accuracy and the computational efficiency are discussed. Although the idea of the weakly coupling using the zonal approach is not new, the present hybrid model is the first one to couple the QALE-FEM with OpenFOAM solver and/or to be applied to numerical simulate the wave-structure interaction with presence of current
Exotic phase diagram of a topological quantum system
We study the quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in the Kitaev spin model on a
triangle-honeycomb lattice. In addition to the ordinary topological QPTs
between Abelian and non-Abelian phases, we find new QPTs which can occur
between two phases belonging to the same topological class, namely, either two
non-Abelian phases with the same Chern number or two Abelian phases with the
same Chern number. Such QPTs result from the singular behaviors of the nonlocal
spin-spin correlation functions at the critical points.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
