This thesis presents a detailed numerical analysis, fabrication method and experimental investigation on 45º tilted fiber gratings (45º-TFGs) and excessively tilted fiber gratings (Ex-TFGs), and their applications in fiber laser and sensing systems. The one of the most significant contributions of the work reported in this thesis is that the 45º-TFGs with high polarization extinction ratio (PER) have been fabricated in single mode telecom and polarization maintaining (PM) fibers with spectral response covering three prominent optic communication and central wavelength ranges at 1060nm, 1310nm and 1550nm. The most achieved PERs for the 45º-TFGs are up to and greater than 35-50dB, which have reached and even exceeded many commercial in-fiber polarizers. It has been proposed that the 45º-TFGs of high PER can be used as ideal in-fiber polarizers for a wide range of fiber systems and applications. In addition, in-depth detailed theoretical models and analysis have been developed and systematic experimental evaluation has been conducted producing results in excellent agreement with theoretical modeling. Another important outcome of the research work is the proposal and demonstration of all fiber Lyot filters (AFLFs) implemented by utilizing two (for a single stage type) and more (for multi-stage) 45º-TFGs in PM fiber cavity structure. The detailed theoretical analysis and modelling of such AFLFs have also been carried out giving design guidance for the practical implementation. The unique function advantages of 45º-TFG based AFLFs have been revealed, showing high finesse multi-wavelength transmission of single polarization and wide range of tuneability. The temperature tuning results of AFLFs have shown that the AFLFs have 60 times higher thermal sensitivity than the normal FBGs, thus permitting thermal tuning rate of ~8nm/10ºC. By using an intra-cavity AFLF, an all fiber soliton mode locking laser with almost total suppression of siliton sidebands, single polarization output and single/multi-wavelength switchable operation has been demonstrated. The final significant contribution is the theoretical analysis and experimental verification on the design, fabrication and sensing application of Ex-TFGs. The Ex-TFG sensitivity model to the surrounding medium refractive index (SRI) has been developed for the first time, and the factors that affect the thermal and SRI sensitivity in relation to the wavelength range, tilt angle, and the size of cladding have been investigated. As a practical SRI sensor, an 81º-TFG UV-inscribed in the fiber with small (40μm) cladding radius has shown an SRI sensitivity up to 1180nm/RIU in the index of 1.345 range. Finally, to ensure single polarization detection in such an SRI sensor, a hybrid configuration by UV-inscribing a 45º-TFG and an 81º-TFG closely on the same piece of fiber has been demonstrated as a more advanced SRI sensing system

Content Recommendation by Analyzing User Behavior in Online Health Communities

Online health communities (OHCs) are the platforms for patients and their care-givers to search and share health-related information, and have attracted a vast amount of users in recent years. However, health consumers are easily overwhelmed by the overloaded information in OHCs, which makes it inefficient for users to find contents of their interest. This study proposes a framework for content recommendation by analyzing user activities in OHCs that utilizes social network analysis and text mining technology. We model users’ activities by constructing user behavior networks that capture implicit interactions of users, based on which closely related users are detected and user similarities are calculated. Text analysis are performed using topic model to select the threads for final content recommendation. Based on the data collected from a famous Chinese OHCs, we expect that our model could achieve promising results

Higher-Order Topology, Monopole Nodal Lines, and the Origin of Large Fermi Arcs in Transition Metal Dichalcogenides XTe2_2 (X=Mo,W)

In recent years, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered great interest as topological materials -- monolayers of centrosymmetric β\beta-phase TMDs have been identified as 2D topological insulators (TIs), and bulk crystals of noncentrosymmetric γ\gamma-phase MoTe2_2 and WTe2_2 have been identified as type-II Weyl semimetals. However, ARPES and STM probes of these TMDs have revealed huge, "arc-like" surface states that overwhelm, and are sometimes mistaken for, the much smaller topological surface Fermi arcs of bulk type-II Weyl points. In this letter, we use first-principles calculations and (nested) Wilson loops to analyze the bulk and surface electronic structure of both β\beta- and γ\gamma-MoTe2_2, finding that β\beta-MoTe2_2 (γ\gamma-MoTe2_2 gapped with symmetry-preserving distortion) is an inversion-symmetry-indicated Z4\mathbb{Z}_{4}-nontrivial (noncentrosymmetric, nonnoncentrosymmetric, non-symmetrysymmetry-indicatedindicated) higher-order TI (HOTI) driven by double band inversion. Both structural phases of MoTe2_2 exhibit the same surface features as WTe2_2, revealing that the large Fermi arcs are in fact not topologically trivial, but are rather the characteristic split and gapped fourfold surface states of a HOTI. We also show that, when the effects of SOC are neglected, β\beta-MoTe2_2 is a nodal-line semimetal with Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}-nontrivial monopole nodal lines (MNLSM). This finding confirms that MNLSMs driven by double band inversion are the weak-SOC limit of HOTIs, implying that MNLSMs are higher-order topological semimetalssemimetals with flat-band-like hinge states, which we find to originate from the corner modes of 2D "fragile" TIs.Comment: Final version, 5 pg main text + 18 pg supplement, 4 + 6 figures, abstract abridged for arXiv posting - see paper for full abstrac

In-fiber linear polarizer based on UV-inscribed 45° tilted grating in polarization maintaining fiber

    Get PDF
We report an in-fiber linear polarizer structured by UV-inscribing a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) into polarization maintaining (PM) fiber along its principal axis. The polarization extinction ratio (PER) achieved by a 48 mm long 45° TFG has reached 46 dB at 1550 nm and the overall PER is >40 dB over a 50 nm wavelength range. Such 45° TFG based polarizers have many advantages over conventional products, including low loss, low cost, simple fabrication process, and no physical modification to the fiber, thus offering high stability and capable of handling high power

How should marketers engage with social media features in online communities to shape knowledge contributions from customers in their potential markets? This is an important question because customer contributions are important drivers of business value. We examine the effect of marketer generated content in online health communities on user-generated content, using longitudinal data from a leading online health community. We focus on the firm’s practice of knowledge investment, in which its marketers provide product information or share life experience by posting in the social interaction section of online health platforms. The results demonstrate that because of knowledge investment in healthcare markets, the use of platform’s social media feature by marketer influence both the quantity and linguistics features of customer-generated content

What Symptoms and How Long? An Interpretable AI Approach for Depression Detection in Social Media

Depression is the most prevalent and serious mental illness, which induces grave financial and societal ramifications. Depression detection is key for early intervention to mitigate those consequences. Such a high-stake decision inherently necessitates interpretability. Although a few depression detection studies attempt to explain the decision based on the importance score or attention weights, these explanations misalign with the clinical depression diagnosis criterion that is based on depressive symptoms. To fill this gap, we follow the computational design science paradigm to develop a novel Multi-Scale Temporal Prototype Network (MSTPNet). MSTPNet innovatively detects and interprets depressive symptoms as well as how long they last. Extensive empirical analyses using a large-scale dataset show that MSTPNet outperforms state-of-the-art depression detection methods with an F1-score of 0.851. This result also reveals new symptoms that are unnoted in the survey approach, such as sharing admiration for a different life. We further conduct a user study to demonstrate its superiority over the benchmarks in interpretability. This study contributes to IS literature with a novel interpretable deep learning model for depression detection in social media. In practice, our proposed method can be implemented in social media platforms to provide personalized online resources for detected depressed patients.Comment: 56 pages, 10 figures, 21 table

Patient Uncertainty About Physician Online Service Availability

In online medical consultation platforms, the situation when patients pursue a physician who has no availability to respond to the request is averse to patients, physicians, and the platform. We explore a potential coordinating mechanism by information intervention in the platform, namely service availability information disclosure. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the intervention, we first explore whether capacity is the potential constraint to the physicians’ acceptance rate. After that, we explore the effect of the intervention on matching efficiency and quality. Our result demonstrates that there is a negative relationship between the number of consultation requests received, which is the premise of the effectiveness of the intervention
