A POSSIBLE PHYSICAL MECHANISM IN THE TREATMENT OF NEUROLOGIC DISORDERS WITH EXTERNALLY APPLIED PICOTESLA MAGNETIC FIELDS

    Get PDF
The recent clinical studies describing the treatment of some neurological disorders with an externally applied picoTesla (10-2 Tesla, or 10-8 gauss) magnetic field are considered from a physical view point. An equation relating the intrinsic (or "rest") energy of a charged particle of mass m with its energy of interaction in an externally applied magnetic field B is presented. The equation represents an initial basic physical interaction as a part of a more complex biological mechanism to explain the therapeutic effects of externally applied magnetic fields in these and other neurologic disorders

4-bit Factorization Circuit Composed of Multiplier Units with Superconducting Flux Qubits toward Quantum Annealing

Prime factorization (P = M*N) is considered to be a promising application in quantum computations. We perform 4-bit factorization in experiments using a superconducting flux qubit toward quantum annealing. Our proposed method uses a superconducting quantum circuit implementing a multiplier Hamiltonian, which provides combinations of M and N as a factorization solution after quantum annealing when the integer P is initially set. The circuit comprises multiple multiplier units combined with connection qubits. The key points are a native implementation of the multiplier Hamiltonian to the superconducting quantum circuit and its fabrication using a Nb multilayer process with a Josephson junction dedicated to the qubit. The 4-bit factorization circuit comprises 32 superconducting flux qubits. Our method has superior scalability because the Hamiltonian is implemented with fewer qubits than in conventional methods using a chimera graph architecture. We perform experiments at 10 mK to clarify the validity of interconnections of a multiplier unit using qubits. We demonstrate experiments at 4.2 K and simulations for the factorization of integers 4, 6, and 9.Comment: Main text (9 pages, 5 figures) and Appendix (8 pages, 7 figures). The Nature and Origin of Chemical Shift for Intracellular Water Nuclei in Artemia Cysts

    Get PDF
We investigated the possible existence of chemical shift of water nuclei in Artemia cysts using high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods. The results conducted at 60, 200, and 500 MHz revealed an unusually large chemical shift for intracellular water protons. After correcting for bulk susceptibility effects, a residual downfield chemical shift of 0.11 ppm was observed in fully hydrated cysts. Similar results have been observed for the deuterium and 17O nuclei. We have ruled out unusual intracellular pH, diamagnetic susceptibility of intracellular water, or interaction of water molecules with lipids, glycerol, and/or trehalose as possible origins of the residual chemical shift. We conclude that the residual chemical shift observed for water nuclei (1H, 2H, and 17O) is due to significant water-macromolecular interactions

Hepatitis C virus infection reduces the lifespan of chimpanzees used in biomedical research

チンパンジーの肝炎感染実験の影響 --寿命が短くなり肝臓や腎臓に障害. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-08-10.Chimpanzees were used in hepatitis research for over three decades with the aim to identify and develop treatments for the virus, a leading cause of chronic liver disease in humans. We used a dataset of 120 chimpanzees housed at a single institution in Japan, 22 of whom became chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), to examine whether HCV infection results in a reduced lifespan as reported in humans. Survival analysis showed that HCV carriers experienced a higher mortality risk compared with non-carriers. Although no chimpanzee died from hepatic disease, carriers showed higher gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (γGTP) levels compared with non-carriers suggesting that HCV infection negatively affected their liver condition. These results provide evidence that special attention is necessary to monitor the long-term condition of ex-biomedical primates
