    Voluntary participation in the design of non-excludable public goods provision mechanisms

    Groves-Ledyard (1977) constructed a mechanism attaining Pareto efficient allocations in the presence of public goods. After this path-breaking paper, many mechanisms have been proposed to attain desirable allocations with public goods. Thus, economists have thought that the free-rider problem is solved, in theory. Our view to this problem is not so optimistic. Rather, we propose fundamental impossibility theorems with public goods. In the previous mechanism design, it was implicitly assumed that every agent must participate in the mechanism that the designer provides. This approach neglects one of the basic features of public goods: non-excludability. We explicitly incorporate non-excludability and then show that it is impossible to construct a mechanism in which every agent has an incentive to participate

    Statistical Modeling of Ultrawideband Body-Centric Wireless Channels Considering Room Volume

    This paper presents the results of a statistical modeling of onbody ultrawideband (UWB) radio channels for wireless body area network (WBAN) applications. Measurements were conducted in five different rooms. A measured delay profile can be divided into two domains; in the first domain (04 ns) has multipath components that are dominant and dependent on room volume. The first domain was modeled with a conventional power decay law model, and the second domain with a modified Saleh-Valenzuela model considering the room volume. Realizations of the impulse responses are presented based on the composite model and compared with the measured average power delay profiles

    Animal Models of Middle Ear Cholesteatoma

    Middle ear acquired cholesteatoma is a pathological condition associated with otitis media, which may be associated with temporal bone resorption, otorrhea and hearing loss, and occasionally various other complications. Cholesteatoma is characterized by the enhanced proliferation of epithelial cells with aberrant morphologic characteristics. Unfortunately, our understanding of the mechanism underlying its pathogenesis is limited. To investigate its pathogenesis, different animal models have been used. This paper provides a brief overview of the current status of research in the field of pathogenesis of middle ear acquired cholesteatoma, four types of animal models previously reported on, up-to-date cholesteatoma research using these animal models, our current studies of the local hybrid ear model, and the future prospect of new animal models of middle ear cholesteatoma

    Vision-based Vehicle Navigation Using the Fluorescent Lamp Array on the Ceiling

    In this paper, autonomous navigation based on a TV vision system on board a vehicle is proppsed. Our method is to use fluorescent lamp arrays on the ceiling as a lighthouse for vehicle motion. First, experimental study of vehicle control based on information from photo-sensors, set up on a TV screen, is worked out using an actual size model. Then, numerical simulations for this control scheme are carried out in detail. Moreover, a more vision-based approach is investigated which extracts information aspects from the images of fluorescent lamp arrays to realize more exact motion along the lamp array. Finally, a practical autonomous vehicle which is controlled by a photo-sensor system is constructed and its experimental results are shown
