On an acoustic field generated by subsonic jet at low Reynolds numbers

An acoustic field generated by subsonic jets at low Reynolds numbers was investigated. This work is motivated by the need to increase the fundamental understanding of the jet noise generation mechanism which is essential to the development of further advanced techniques of noise suppression. The scope of this study consists of two major investigation. One is a study of large scale coherent structure in the jet turbulence, and the other is a study of the Reynolds number dependence of jet noise. With this in mind, extensive flow and acoustic measurements in low Reynolds number turbulent jets (8,930 less than or equal to M less than or equal to 220,000) were undertaken using miniature nozzles of the same configuration but different diameters at various exist Mach numbers (0.2 less than or equal to M less than or equal to 0.9)

Diversity, Stability, Recursivity, and Rule Generation in Biological System: Intra-inter Dynamics Approach

Basic problems for the construction of a scenario for the Life are discussed. To study the problems in terms of dynamical systems theory, a scheme of intra-inter dynamics is presented. It consists of internal dynamics of a unit, interaction among the units, and the dynamics to change the dynamics itself, for example by replication (and death) of units according to their internal states. Applying the dynamics to cell differentiation, isologous diversification theory is proposed. According to it, orbital instability leads to diversified cell behaviors first. At the next stage, several cell types are formed, first triggered by clustering of oscillations, and then as attracting states of internal dynamics stabilized by the cell-to-cell interaction. At the third stage, the differentiation is determined as a recursive state by cell division. At the last stage, hierarchical differentiation proceeds, with the emergence of stochastic rule for the differentiation to sub-groups, where regulation of the probability for the differentiation provides the diversity and stability of cell society. Relevance of the theory to cell biology is discussed.Comment: 19 pages, Int.J. Mod. Phes. B (in press

Universal scaling for the spin-electricity conversion on surface states of topological insulators

We have investigated spin-electricity conversion on surface states of bulk-insulating topological insulator (TI) materials using a spin pumping technique. The sample structure is Ni-Fe|Cu|TI trilayers, in which magnetic proximity effects on the TI surfaces are negligibly small owing to the inserted Cu layer. Voltage signals produced by the spin-electricity conversion are clearly observed, and enhanced with decreasing temperature in line with the dominated surface transport at lower temperatures. The efficiency of the spin-electricity conversion is greater for TI samples with higher resistivity of bulk states and longer mean free path of surface states, consistent with the surface spin-electricity conversion

Ground State Property of an Alternating Spin Ladder Involving Two Kinds of Inter-Chain Interactions

The ground state property of the alternating spin ladder is studied in the case that the system involves an antiferromagnetic intra-chain interaction as well as two kinds of inter-chain interactions; one is between spins of the same magnitude and the other is between spins with different magnitudes. The calculation has been carried out by the exact diagonalization method. As a consequence of the competition among interactions, the system is revealed to show an interesting variety of phases in the ground state property. Its phase diagram is exhibited in the parameter space of the system. We find that, however small the total amount of the inter-chain interactions is, the ferrimagnetic ground state becomes unstable in a certain region. In this case, which of the ferrimagnetic and the singlet ground state to appear is determined only by the ratio between the inter-chain interactions regardless of their total amount. The nature of two phases appearing in the singlet region of the phase diagram and the type of the phase transition between them are also discussed. The results are ensured by comparing with those of obtained in other models which are contained in our model as special limiting cases.Comment: 12 pages, 9 PostScript figure

Spin-current injection and detection in strongly correlated organic conductor

Spin-current injection into an organic semiconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br\rm{\kappa\text{-}(BEDT\text{-}TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br} film induced by the spin pumping from an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film. When magnetization dynamics in the YIG film is excited by ferromagnetic or spin-wave resonance, a voltage signal was found to appear in the κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br\rm{\kappa\text{-}(BEDT\text{-}TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br} film. Magnetic-field-angle dependence measurements indicate that the voltage signal is governed by the inverse spin Hall effect in κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br\rm{\kappa\text{-}(BEDT\text{-}TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br}. We found that the voltage signal in the κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br\rm{\kappa\text{-}(BEDT\text{-}TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br}/YIG system is critically suppressed around 80 K, around which magnetic and/or glass transitions occur, implying that the efficiency of the spin-current injection is suppressed by fluctuations which critically enhanced near the transitions

Observational tests of one-bubble open inflationary cosmological models

    Get PDF
Motivated by recent studies of the one-bubble inflationary scenario, simple open cold dark matter models are tested for consistency with cosmological observations. The initial perturbation spectrum is derived by solving for the evolution of fluctuations in an open inflationary stage. A likelihood analysis is performed for the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies using the two-year COBE DMR data and considering models based on both the Bunch-Davies and conformal vacua. Having normalized the perturbation spectrum to fit the COBE data, we reconsider the validity of the open model from the view point of cosmic structure formation. Open models may be severely constrained by the COBE likelihood analysis. In particular, small values of \Omega_0 are ruled out in the Bunch-Davies case: we find that \Omega_0\ge 0.34 at 95\% confidence for this model

Asymptotic analysis of the model for distribution of high-tax payers

The z-transform technique is used to investigate the model for distribution of high-tax payers, which is proposed by two of the authors (K. Y and S. M) and others. Our analysis shows an asymptotic power-law of this model with the exponent -5/2 when a total ``mass'' has a certain critical value. Below the critical value, the system exhibits an ordinary critical behavior, and scaling relations hold. Above the threshold, numerical simulations show that a power-law distribution coexists with a huge ``monopolized'' member. It is argued that these behaviors are observed universally in conserved aggregation processes, by analizing an extended model.Comment: 5pages, 3figure

Elementary Excitations of Heisenberg Ferrimagnetic Spin Chains

We numerically investigate elementary excitations of the Heisenberg alternating-spin chains with two kinds of spins 1 and 1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled to each other. Employing a recently developed efficient Monte Carlo technique as well as an exact diagonalization method, we verify the spin-wave argument that the model exhibits two distinct excitations from the ground state which are gapless and gapped. The gapless branch shows a quadratic dispersion in the small-momentum region, which is of ferromagnetic type. With the intention of elucidating the physical mechanism of both excitations, we make a perturbation approach from the decoupled-dimer limit. The gapless branch is directly related to spin 1's, while the gapped branch originates from cooperation of the two kinds of spins.Comment: 7 pages, 7 Postscript figures, RevTe
