Antiferromagnetic spin Seebeck effect across the spin-flop transition: A stochastic Ginzburg-Landau simulation

We investigate the antiferromagnetic spin Seebeck effect across the spin-flop transition in a numerical simulation based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation for a bilayer of a uniaxial insulating antiferromagnet and an adjacent metal. By directly simulating the rate of change of the conduction-electron spin density s in the adjacent metal layer, we demonstrate that a sign reversal of the antiferromagnetic spin Seebeck effect across the spin-flop transition occurs when the interfacial coupling of s to the staggered magnetization n of the antiferromagnet dominates, whereas no sign reversal appears when the interfacial coupling of s to the magnetization m dominates. Moreover, we show that the sign reversal is influenced by the degree of spin dephasing in the metal layer. Our result indicates that the sign reversal is not a generic property of a simple uniaxial antiferromagnet, but controlled by microscopic details of the exchange coupling at the interface and the spin dephasing in the metal layer

The treatment of cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis is difficult. We report a successful case of severe cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis treated with intravesical instillation of prostaglandin F2 alpha. A 32-year-old woman underwent high-dose cyclophosphamide conditioning before the autologous bone marrow transplantation. She developed clot retention which required continuous irrigation with normal saline. The patient had failed to respond to continuous bladder irrigation with saline and intravesical administration of 1% alum. Fifty ml of prostaglandin F2 alpha solution (1 mg in 100 ml normal saline) was instilled into the bladder, with a dwelling time of 60 minutes, three times a day for 5 days. The hematuria cleared completely 3 days after therapy. The only adverse effect was bladder spasm which was controlled with oxybutynin chloride. The success of this therapy suggests that prostaglandin F2 alpha is a safe and useful therapy for hemorrhagic cystitis secondary to cyclophosphamide chemotherapy

Predicting invasion in mammographically detected microcalcifcation: a preliminary report

BACKGROUND: With the increased use of mammography for breast cancer screening, the diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) too has increased. This study was carried out to identify clinical and radiological factors that may predict the presence of invasive disease within mammographically detected microcalcifcation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 13 vacuum-assisted breast biopsies (Mammotome(®)) of mammographic calcification, which were reported to be either DCIS or invasive disease on final histopathology, was carried out. Final surgical pathology was correlated with pre-operative features (clinical, radiological and core histology) to predict the presence of an invasive component. RESULTS: The overall sensitivity of Mammotome(® )was 81.8%, while for invasion it was 50%. Small size, granular morphology, increased number and area of calcification cluster may help in predicting invasion on mammography. CONCLUSIONS: Mammotome(® )biopsy fails to detect invasion correctly in half the cases despite ascertaining correctness of biopsy with post biopsy x-ray

Terahertz absorption spectra of L-, D-, and DL-alanine and their application to determination of enantiometric composition

Absorption spectra of polycrystalline L-, D-, and DL-alanine have been measured by the terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS)in the frequency range from 10 to 90 cm−1 at room temperature. We observed several absorption bands, which have the large difference between enantiomers (L- and D-alanine)and the racemic compound (DL-alanine)in their peak frequencies. This obvious difference shows that the THz absorption bands are strikingly sensitive to the crystal structures. This result indicates that the THz-TDS can be used for distinguishing between the enantiomers and the racemic compound. We propose and demonstrate a method to determine the enantiometric composition of amino acids from the THz absorption spectra
